Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Mae - May 16, 2025 Mae had expected to remain alone for weeks, at least; a grim possibility that she was pleasantly surprised to find would not come to pass. She wasn't alone — at least for now. Whatever had made her family disappear could still return, she reasoned, and that thought kept her on high alert. The midday sun was warm on her face while she marked the borders. Mae trudged on, exhaustion slowing her gait only a little. Nothing would have stopped her had her ears not caught the distant sound of a twig breaking underfoot. She stilled, ears standing tall, and waited for some other sign to give away her company. RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Hirundo - May 19, 2025 Hirundo was not the most successful hunter, for numerous reasons. Nonetheless, he had caught a quail today, something he was very pleased about. Having already gorged himself on her nest of eggs, the hen's lifeless body swung limply from his jaws. He practically strutted his way back to the boulder that overlooked the river. Miss Mae would be so pleased! Then he stumbled on a twig. Ow! My paw!he tried to whimper, though it was muffled by the quail in his teeth. He'd gotten a thorn stuck between his toes. He hopped awkwardly through the undergrowth, only vaguely aware of Mae's dark silhouette somewhere nearby. Ow! Ow! RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Mae - May 19, 2025 Mae heaved a sigh. Even muffled and high-pitched with pain, Hirundo's voice was unmistakable. Whatever he'd gotten himself into this time, she would surely have to get him out of it — and if there was a touch of haste in her step, it was only to stop him making that awful noise any longer than necessary. Certainly she wasn't worried. The scent of his blood wasn't strong, but its existence flattened her ears to her head nonetheless. Quit flailing around!Mae hissed, hurrying closer to inspect him. She smelled the bird, too, but that was less important than whatever had him yelping a hole through her eardrums. RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Hirundo - May 19, 2025 Hirundo whimpered, but did as he was told. He dropped the bird on the ground before sitting down himself, delicately raising his injured paw for inspection. He'd gotten into scrapes hunting before, but nothing quite so insidiously small and painful as a thorn. Will I have to bite my paw off?Hirundo said mournfully. (The paw in question was mostly fine, save for the nasty thorn wedged through the webbing.) My uncle lost an eye hunting an elk, and they all called him Eyeball after that. I guess I'd have to be Three-Paws. RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Mae - May 20, 2025 Bite his paw off? Mae hoped he was joking. She bent to inspect his paw without waiting for permission, all business for the moment. She had to sniff around his paw to pinpoint the source of the blood, and even then she wasn't sure what exactly was wrong until her whiskers brushed the thorn. It took a second pass through the smallest whiskers beneath her nose to identify it. A thorn. She could have laughed. Instead she said grimly, Yep, gonna have to come off. Hold still, Three-Paws.Mae didn't wait for him to react before she gripped the thorn between her front teeth and yanked it out. RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Hirundo - May 22, 2025 Before he had a chance to yelp out a strangled what, a sharp pain spiked through his paw. Whatever he’d been trying to say turned into a high-pitched howl. It took Hirundo a moment to collect himself. When he finally looked down, he was overjoyed to see that his paw was still attached to his leg. And it didn’t hurt much anymore! That wasn’t so bad,Hirundo admitted sheepishly. Thanks, Miss Mae. He looked up at her, only to finally notice the drying blood on her forehead. Hirundo’s eyes went wide with horror. You have blood all over your face! RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Mae - May 22, 2025 Mae began to grumble something unintelligible in response to his thanks — but stopped short when Hirundo mentioned her face. Rude. She snorted. What? Oh - that's old news, she told him, sniffing for the bird now. Unless ya mean my ears are bleedin' now cause you blew a hole in 'em.Mae pawed at her ears to check, wincing a little when she grazed the gash on her head. No bloody ears, at least. RE: Keep your heart 'cause I already got one - Hirundo - May 24, 2025 Hirundo was rendered momentarily speechless. Old news!? …Considering the rest of her scars, perhaps a new injury wasn’t all that alarming to her, but still! That had to hurt! He tried to lean over to sniff at her forehead. It wasn’t easy to see much amid the matted fur, but the wound looked wide, though fortunately not deep enough to expose the skull. Something that looked more serious than it was …as long as it didn’t get infected. We need to clean this right away,Hirundo told her with a furrowed brow. I’ll put a poultice on it to keep the flies off, too. First wash your face, then eat. Hirundo made no move towards the bird, even as he said it. He was sure he could not make Mae do anything, nor was he willing to risk becoming Three-Paws by getting in between the river-witch and her food. Instead, he turned to sniff around for what he needed. |
