you caught me staring off the cliff again - Sandpiper - May 19, 2025

The ground was rough beneath her feet, scraping her pads raw with each hurried step, but Piper didn't slow. Couldn't. Not yet. She cast another glance over her shoulder. It didn't seem as if anyone had followed her, but she wasn't taking any chances.

She would need to find a new place soon. Once she'd healed a bit. Once she was certain she wasn't being followed. Piper stopped to take in the open stretch of shrubland ahead, the bright dappling of bitterroot as far as the eye could see. It was as good a place as any to stop and lick her wounds for a bit, she supposed. She would at least see trouble coming.

She twisted to inspect her bloodied behind with a grimace. Just wonderful.

The scent of blood was all too familiar. Wolf’s blood, no less—as harsh as sunlight in her eyes. She saw it clinging to a strange she-wolf’s haunches, barely hidden by vivid purple blooms. Sienna knew the smart thing to do would be to look away and keep walking.

Unfortunately, she made eye contact with the blood-stained wolf, who now knew she was here. Too late. The russet yearling hadn’t exactly been trying to hide; even if she had, it would’ve been difficult to disguise her presence in these fields, no matter how small and scrappy dainty and petite she was.

What the hell happened to you? Did you sit on a bear? Sienna asked, nose wrinkled with a frown. She kept a cautious distance for now.

And there it was — or she, this time. Trouble. If there was anywhere a wolf with fur so red might blend in, this was surely the place, but the yearling didn't seem to be trying to hide. Piper wasn't sure yet if that was a good sign or a bad one.

Then the girl opened her mouth, and Piper decided it was bad.

Why don't you turn around and wander on back to your parents, yeah? You wouldn't want to get hurt out here, Piper's smile lacked warmth. The world was no place for this girl if she still thought bears were the worst danger out there. There are bigger threats than bears for a wolf without her pack.

Geez. This lady sure was testy. Just curious, was all, Sienna said, unfazed. Wolves randomly dashing out of nowhere covered in blood was, incredibly, not a huge surprise to the yearling. If anything, that seemed like the norm. A dreary, bothersome norm. Still, growing up in a pack where someone came limping back nearly every week had taught her a few things.

I don’t see your pack either, she added after a pause. I figured you’d want those wounds cleaned and looked after. But if you want your leg to rot off, I’ll just be on my merry way then.

Curious, huh? Sienna eyed her warily, but her tone was somewhat more cordial when she spoke again. You know something about herbs, then? She questioned the girl, turning to face her more fully.

She looked too young to know much — but she was right about one thing. Sienna couldn't afford to turn down help this time. Even help from some random mouthy yearling.

That was more like it. Sienna inclined her head. She was getting quite good at this bargaining thing, or so she thought.

More or less, she said with a disaffected shrug. My mothers taught me a few things. She might not be their true daughter, but she had still been raised by witches. A fact that she was not eager to advertise, as yet, but a she-wolf who knew a few ways to clean a wound wasn’t that unusual. Probably.

The striking purple flowers that carpeted the ground wouldn’t be of any use that Sienna knew, unfortunately. She sniffed at one cautiously, and moved on to looking for any sign of a bright yellow dandelion, or at the broad leaves of a plantain.

First you should wash that blood off before something sniffs us out, Sienna added. There any water here?

Saltwater would be best, but Sienna couldn’t smell a hint of salt, so that was pointless. The dry, gravelly earth didn’t look well irrigated, but maybe the stranger knew where they might find a pond. Or a least a creek.
