finally the fever claiming sobeille’s energies dissipated, replaced by a general malaise that had her rarely stirring from their den. at first, she credited her dwindling energy to the enormous wounds over her body. but as those sores knitted closed, a more pervasive feeling stuck in her gut.
she missed her maman violently. sobeille rustled sapphique’s stores for the putrid slug bile mireille had once fed her, finding naught but sparse herbs past their prime.
if Etienne was here, she could ask him; there was a growing suspicion in her the nausea that visited her in the morning came from something darker. of this, she did not speak.
returning to the den with two dried hare’s ears, sobeille gave each puppy one and sank just outside the den’s threshold. her gaze gravitated towards the adjoining den that housed the seal. for weeks now, it provided steady and fat milk for sapphique’s future. she supposed that secured its future survival, when they had use for her no longer.
the logistics of bringing the seal back to the sea were a problem for another day. under the warm press of an early summer sun, sobeille dozed.
