every time you move like that, I got to go to sunday mass - Journey - June 08, 2025

Anyone from VS want to chat?

On her first day without Balarina, Journey took some time to lounge in the waves of Stavanger Bay. It was hot out, and she wanted to cool her aching paws — but she also saw it as an opportunity to wash some of the heat-scent from her pelt. It could come back, of course, but she could be without it for a few hours, at least!

She emerged from the sea with sand and foam speckling her pelt, her tongue lolling out in canine joy. The unbreakable pep in her step had not waned despite her exhaustion, but she did soon collapse on herself to roll around in the wet sand.

For the first time, the forest felt suffocating. The towering trees, once a comfort, now loomed like silent judges, their branches clawing at the sky.

Oppressive. Overbearing.

A tightness wound itself around Kirain’s chest. Every rustle, every shadow seemed to press closer. Her nerves frayed with each step, until she could bear it no longer.

She needed out.
She needed air.

Without a second thought, she pushed through the underbrush, racing between trunks as if ghosts nipped at her heels—phantoms of a past that mocked and clung to her like cobwebs. The moment she broke free of the trees, she didn’t stop. Her paws beat a rhythm into the earth, a desperate gallop toward the nearby bay.

And then, relief. The salt tang hit her nose just as her feet met the sand. She didn’t hesitate. Kirain plunged into the water, crashing through waves like a creature fleeing fire. The cold was shocking, a slap of clarity, but welcome. She needed it. She needed to drown out the fear snaking through her veins like ice.

She stayed there for a time, drifting just beyond the pull of the surf, letting the tide rock her gently. For a moment, she breathed.

Until, movement.
She turned toward the shore and froze.

A stranger stood there.

Startled, her limbs stiffened, and she slipped beneath the surface with a gasp, dragging briny water into her lungs. Panic flared. She thrashed upward, coughing and sputtering, fighting her way toward the shallows.

Salt burned her throat as she stumbled ashore, collapsing onto wet sand with each breath scraping free the water that did not belong.

All at once, Journey's joyful roll in the sand was interrupted by the arrival of another wolf. The breeze blew her scent to the traveler, who settled on her belly to watch the stranger plunge into the water. It was such an energetic display! Journey watched her swim for a little longer, and then watched her... sink?!

Leaping to her paws as if that would help her keep sight of the stranger, Journey waited to see if she would resurface once more. It occurred to her that she might go in after the pale wolf, but... well. Before she could decide whether that would be wise, a white head popped up like so much seafoam on the waves.

"Are you okay?" Journey shouted to the stranger, though her voice was probably lost under the ungodly sputtering of the poor fellow, and the rush of the waves to boot. She remained quiet, then, hovering at the shoreline as the wolf dragged herself up the beach.

"Well!" said Journey, not sure what to say. "That sure looked unpleasant. Are you alright?"

She seemed fine — but a little sympathy never went amiss, did it?

Coughs racked her body, each one a sharp effort to clear her lungs. Heat surged beneath her fur—not just from exertion, but from sheer embarrassment. She struggled to steady her breath before managing a hoarse reply. I-I’m okay. Just… caught off guard.

Her throat burned with each word, so she let herself stay sprawled on the ground, focusing on recovery. When her breathing finally evened out, she shifted her gaze to the she-wolf nearby.

I’m sorry, she said with a weak, breathless chuckle. That was… not one of my finer moments.

Clearing her throat, she offered a faint smile. I’m Kirain. And you are? What brings you here?

Despite everything, her voice carried a gentle warmth, a quiet resilience that hadn’t been shaken.

If this were one of her daughters, Journey would've come closer and thumped her on the back a few times. Instead, she only grimaced in sympathy while the stranger caught her breath, hoping, idly, that her pack had a good chemist for the cough that would surely result from this sad foray.

"Journey," she replied when prompted, her tail waggling in delayed greeting. "Nice to meet you, Kirain."

It was a pretty name; one that Journey would surely remember.

"I'm traveling with some friends," she went on, though clearly, she was quite alone. "Most of them are gathered already gathering at the hot springs; we're having a get-together there for mid-summer. You should come." Her tail wagged faster. "You'll surely see things you've never seen before."

Her ears perked at the mention of the hot springs.
Oh! How exciting! Bushtit told me about that, but I wasn't sure what to make of it.

She pushed herself upright, a wide grin spreading across her face as she turned eagerly to her new companion.

What will be there? What’s it all about? How many are attending? Where did you come from? When will it take place?

The questions spilled out in a breathless rush, her tail thumping against the sand in joyful rhythm. Finally—an adventure! A chance to experience something new!
