One day you'll figure me out - Leto - June 08, 2025

Bushtit told her @Towhee had moved to a caldera, and so with some weeks of planning and hesitations Leto left to search for the older woman. She still hadn't decided if it was right to ask for her help like this - would she ever be able to return the favour to Towhee?

She wasn't all too sure if she was at the right place, but with borders strong enough to suggest a pack and a caldera in front of her, she had to try. Lifting her head to call to the wolves within, she silently begged that this was the right stop. Once she loved to travel, but having been away from her children for the longest time since their birth Leto was feeling uneasy.

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Towhee - June 12, 2025

The imminent arrival of the newest Redhawks effectively culled any wanderlust living in Towhee’s heart. She knew they could stand to recruit another wolf or two, though their core felt pretty solid. She refused to stray further than the foot of the caldera these days, even though her mind often wandered further afield during her patrols.

She caught herself thinking of @Towhee Jr a lot lately. How was motherhood going for her? Had Bushtit visited her lately? Of course, she thought of all her other wayward children and their children too. What had ever become of Meerkat’s travels with @Njord and Skipjack? Had Otter ever reunited with her parents and brother? Was it too much to hope they’d all magically find their way to the caldera someday? What would @Fennec make of her grandchildren, should she ever appear?

Before Towhee could speculate on that much, she noticed a figure straddling the borderline she was currently patrolling. Recognition registered a beat later. Concern flared through her, even as she tried to shove aside all thoughts of the Segundo.

Hey, Leto. What brings you here? the Deputy said by way of greeting as she approached the visitor.

She was lucky to have it be Towhee who came to meet her; maybe she could keep this private. Smiling to the older woman, she closed the gap between them to meet her in the middle. You, actually. She responded, smiling lightly. Bushtit told me you were here. I hope it's alright for me to visit, I needed to ask you for some advice. It was best to be direct, straight to the point she thought.

Leto felt strange, asking for help like this, but what could she do? If she hadn't brought herself out here, she simply would have been leaving Delos to struggle on his own. That wouldn't have been fair to him.

She met Leto’s reply with a slow blink. Although the caldera and pass weren’t overly distant, this was still a long way to come for advice. They were friendly but not really friends… sort of like Towhee’s relationship with Soto.

Pushing that thought aside, she quipped, Well, I am ancient and therefore full of wisdom. What’s up?

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Leto - June 15, 2025

It's one of my son's, Delos. She spoke, huffing a quiet sigh. He's different. He came out all pale and flaky, which I had a brother who was like that too, but I've noticed that he isn't hearing us as well as he should by now. I have to get right up to his ears or he ignores me entirely. A frown painting her face, she searched Towhee's expression for signs or whether she should be shutting right up or not. I didn't know who else I could ask for help. Nobody in the pass talks about it, I'm not sure if many of them have noticed.

Towhee was still up and running, so she knew Delos would be able to live a long life even if his ears were a bit foggy; Leto was more concerned about what it would mean for his life in Verapaz.

Towhee couldn’t help but pull a face when Leto described her son as pale and flaky. What did she even mean by that? She quickly schooled her expression, eyes squinting when she went on to say Delos seemed to be hard of hearing. Towhee had to quash a flicker of irritation at the inference that this was a problem, though she understood Leto was only here in the hope of helping her little boy.

If he’s deaf, it’s really not a big deal. When my older sister figured out I couldn’t hear, she made up signs to communicate with me. It then caught on and became an entire language. You can use that one, Towhee said, or make up your own. As far as his other features go, I can’t say I’ve had experience with them. At least, I don’t think I have. Can you elaborate what you mean by ‘pale and flaky’?

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Leto - June 16, 2025

Towhee's reassurance brought her some sense of relaxation. Right, Bushtit had taught her Ptero. She wasn't fluent in the least, but it was better than nothing. Bushtit taught me some of it, Soto wanted me to learn. I guess it was a good thing I paid attention. Whether or not Delos would pick up on it, she wasn't sure. He already had two different languages stuffed into his vocabulary, could he learn a third? I just want to be a good mother to him.

When Towhee questioned her about Delos' strange appearance, she had to think for a moment before elaborating. He looks a lot like me, but.. whiter? His fur is thinner too. Did that make sense? She wasn't sure. He's always getting sunburns, and it's left his skin really dry. I've stopped letting him stay out in the sun when it's too bright but I feel horrible, he thinks he's being punished. Frowning, she shook her head. It would make more sense if you saw him. A couple months ago he got it bad, he hadn't been outside for very long but it looked like he had been boiled.

I'm just not sure what to do. Where I grew up you barely saw the sun at all, I had a brother who burned quick like him but it was never this bad.

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Towhee - June 16, 2025

You are a good mother, Towhee said as if it was a matter of fact. You know how I know? You came all this way just to talk to me about him. And, well, she continued, pausing in contemplative silence for a few beats, it sounds like he needs to live somewhere more hospitable than the lowlands. I know that’s probably not what you want to hear but if the sun is that much of an issue, he needs to be someplace with plenty of cover, assuming he doesn’t want to become nocturnal.

There were so many forests around here, the Redhawk was certain they could find one that suited their needs. She glanced behind her, where the caldera’s sloping sides hid the fortress of a territory within. There were some woods here, though nothing that expansive. However…

You know, she said slowly, clearly thinking out loud, the caldera’s interior is cast in shadow most of the time, excepting certain times of day. You could bring him here, Towhee posited with a shrug. I mean, you and your kids could all come here to live, if you wanted. We have room and resources.

She assumed, however, that Leto was not in any hurry to leave Verapaz. And what would Soto think of Towhee “stealing” some of his members? Weren’t they sort of allies? Killdeer had said something about it once. Maybe it wasn’t official, though offering refuge to a young man in his time of need seemed like something a good ally would do.

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Leto - June 16, 2025

Towhee was probably right, but it was still hard to hear. I'll have to talk to my children about it first, and Soto too. Verapaz is the first place I've really been able to settle, and it's the only home they've known. Not to mention that neither of her boys would be particularly happy about being pulled away from Soto. It probably would be better though, if I can't figure things out for him in the pass. It has a lot of shade but the sun just moves it so quickly.

There would be a lot to think about during her trip home, but it was true that if the Caldera had more shade it would be better for Delos. She needed to prioritize him. Thanks, Towhee. Even if we don't decide to join you here, I'll come visit. Smiling at the older woman, Leto turned and took her exit.

RE: One day you'll figure me out - Towhee - June 16, 2025

Of course Leto wouldn’t relocate without giving it due consideration. Towhee met her words with a nod, her lips pressed together. They parted in some surprise when the woman promptly turned and left. She wanted to call out to her, maybe offer her a tour so she could ascertain the territory properly, but Leto moved off so hastily that she really didn’t get the chance.

Well, she probably just wanted to get back to her children. Still, Towhee’s face scrunched as she watched the Countess’s silhouette until it disappeared into the distance. She had come such a long way to only stop by for five minutes. Shaking her head lightly, the Redhawk resumed her slow patrol.
