I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 10, 2025

Her search had sent her in a vile circle of all the she knew, and in the end she stumbled right back to the Teekons.

Stubborn as she was, Eydis he begun to accept the simple fact that her children were dead. There were no changelings, only illness and death that ripped them from her grasp. She had wasted vital time that she should have spent recovering and rebuilding on a fantasy that only made her more miserable; and yet coming to terms with reality had not healed her. She had wanted to be dead too, wished each day for a tree to fall or a stampede of bison. It never came.

She didn't know how she could even begin to feel better. How did so many mothers lose children and continue moving forward, and why couldn't she?

Slumping into the shallow shore of a lake she hoped that gentle waves would make her feel a bit better at the very least. The moon was high, and the crickets seemed to be singing for the bright night it brought.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - July 11, 2025

Towhee’s days passed in a blur of summer sunshine. She had no complaints as she watched the two newest Redhawks grow up in the Hobbit Hole. Most of her time was spent looking after @Carolina Redhawk and @Lyric Redhawk in one capacity or another, though she carved out time for patrols too. Life was as idyllic as it had ever been, so she knew it was just a matter of time before the universe whumped her hard. In the meantime, she enjoyed every golden moment.

Presently the pups were tucked in bed and her patrol was done, though the night felt young to her. Towhee decided to do something she hadn’t done recently: leave the caldera. She didn’t venture far, meandering through Bramblepoint and idly keeping her feelers out for nocturnal game. She decided to pay a visit to the lake over yonder, particularly when her squinted orange eyes spied a figure slumped on the far shore.

From her side of the water, the Redhawk halted and took a seat, freeing up her forepaws to cup around her mouth as she hollered, Hey, you, with the face! Are you dead?

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 11, 2025

A not-so graceful holler hit her ears, forcing Eydis out of her miserable thoughts and back into reality. Twisting her head she soon spotted the source, calling back a dry-throated No!

It took a moment, but she was pretty sure she recognised the old fart. A lack of daylight made it difficult to confirm, but she still somewhat remembered meeting an old lady and what Eydis was sure was her grandson in a forest just south - she thought it was south anyways.

She wasn't exactly hopping and yelling joyous day, but of any of the sort of familiar faces she could have spotted this was probably a better one.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - July 11, 2025

Of course, Towhee couldn’t hear any response given, though she took the figure’s movements as proof of life. She pushed back onto all fours when the stranger—or so she assumed, at this point—didn’t make any effort to rise. Maybe they were injured or sick. Keeping her family in mind, the Redhawk slowly rounded the lake, approaching with caution.

She rolled to a halt perhaps three yards away from the prostrate wolf. Now that Towhee could both see and smell her to some extent, she felt like they’d crossed paths before. But she couldn’t remember any specifics at the moment. Maybe exchanging a few words would jog her memory. In any case, the she-wolf didn’t smell like she had any physical issues, so that was good.

Moving a little closer, Towhee hisspered, Not dead. But are you dying? Or just trying to rest, and I’m interrupting?

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 14, 2025

Watching the older woman make her approach, Eydis stood to shake herself dry. Pouting, more like it. She responded with a grunt, though registering what the purpose of the question likely was only a moment later. I'm not carrying anything if that's what you're worried about. Well, that she knew of anyways.

Self-deprecation probably wasn't all that cute, but it was a habit she hadn't yet shook off. I think I remember you. Don't you have a grandson? She looked behind the woman as though she expected to see the boy again too, though he was likely much bigger now.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - July 14, 2025

Towhee had interrupted a bona fide pity party. Her brow quirked with morbid curiosity, a soft snort escaping her when the stranger said she wasn’t carrying anything contagious. Only, she wasn’t a stranger, according to her. Towhee squinted, assessing her features and drawing a total blank.

A few, she quipped in response to the woman’s prompt. And I guess I’m geriatric enough that my memory’s faulty because I have this vague sense that we’ve met but… I have no recollection of you beyond that, sorry, Towhee admitted, not sounding very apologetic at all.

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 14, 2025

She wasn't bothered by the other's faulty memory, because frankly she didn't remember much beyond the kid and the yelling. You're fine, I don't remember much of it either - and I'm still young. She responded, offering a smile that while small carried kind intentions.

We should restart then, right? Seemed right to her. I'm Eydis. Moving on to casual conversation felt like the comfortable option. Talking and thinking about dead kids wasn't exactly a good introduction in any sense.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - July 17, 2025

She did feel better about it when the woman—Eydis, she offered—said she could barely remember either. Towhee was getting old, she knew that, but she liked to think she was still sharp as a tack. She errantly wondered if that was false, if her memory was slipping, but she shook off that thought. She could worry about it some other day. Or not. Especially if she forgot.

Towhee, she replied, then considered asking which grandson Eydis might know. Instead, she wondered, I have to know: why are you so pouty on this lovely evening, Eydis?

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 26, 2025

Towhee inquired on her glum mood, and Eydis found herself complying. That's old lady power right there. I've walked in a circle for about half a year. She grunted, finding some humour in the statement. Now I'm back where I started, and there's nothing to show for it. Except maybe some muscle loss.

But that's life. She was sure she didn't need to tell this one. But what about you, why are you out here? Part of her was curious, part of her didn't want to linger on the topic of her crazed adventure to find her dead kids. Definitely would be a good story, but more like the kind you hear from second-hand from a relative scaring pups to sleep.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - July 28, 2025

She’d wasted time, according to her. Towhee pondered this a moment. She liked wandering, missed it sometimes. But she had never really done it without some sort of purpose, most often choosing destinations based on where her relatives lived. Why had Eydis set out in the first place? What had she hoped—and apparently failed—to accomplish? She wanted to ask, though the dismissal and deflection told Towhee that Eydis wasn’t particularly interested in discussing it further.

I’m out here because I had some extra pep in my step this evening, she replied readily, tail swishing, even after checking off everything on my to-do list. I used to be a wanderer too, she continued, orange eyes meeting Eydis’s speculatively, but now I’m pretty tied down to the caldera. And happy to be there. But I figured I do a little meandering with this sudden chunk of free time, Towhee concluded with a shrug.

She could try to make good use of this time away from the caldera, namely by bringing back something. If not game, then perhaps some new plaything for the littles. Towhee glanced around in quiet assessment before her orange gaze found its way back to her acquaintance’s face.

If you’re committed to your pity party, I can leave you to it. But if you’d rather do something else, I wouldn’t mind some company. I’m gonna head that way, she said, pointing at the thin stretch of trees that lined the lake’s western bank, and then maybe work my way back toward home while looking for something to eat. Or play with. Or, you know, both.

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - July 28, 2025

Once a wanderer, now able to be tied to one place. Eydis hoped she could manage a similar feat.

I could hunt, as long as you don't mind. She decided. Even if Towhee hadn't meant it that way, Eydis thought she was right; there was no point of soaking in her pity. A walk would get her mind off of things.

She wasn't so sure of this area, but Towhee seemed to know her way around. She would have to trust that much.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - August 07, 2025

She wouldn’t have issued the invitation if she minded, though Towhee didn’t point that out. She simply nodded her head, then broke into a swift walk. She really was full of beans this evening, though she was still an older woman. Hopefully Eydis wouldn’t have any trouble keeping up with her.

As the two she-wolves ventured into the trees, Towhee slowed a little to ascertain their surroundings. There wasn’t much to see, given the darkness, and of course she couldn’t hear shit. But her nostrils flared as she drank in all the various smells, sifting through them in case any proved promising.

In the meantime, her orange eyes found Eydis’s pale green ones as she said, Truth or dare, apropos of nothing.

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - August 14, 2025

Eydis was quick to follow behind, though she wouldn't pass Towhee's hip. It had been a while since she had bothered hunting at night, early morning was more her pace.

Raising an eyebrow when Towhee spoke, she found herself surprised. Walking alongside an ancient relic of a wolf she hadn't expected to be playing games, but Eydis supposed that Towhee did look pretty good for approximately 70 years old. Truth. She decided after her hesitation passed. How long had it been since she played this? Before dispersing from her family, she guessed.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - August 18, 2025

Eydis went for truth, which stumped Towhee. She would’ve been stumped by the other option too though. She hadn’t really thought it through at all, just tossed it out there on a whim. But thus prompted, she poked her tongue into her cheek and thought for a moment.

Eyes brightening, she posed, If you woke up one day as a dude, what’s the first thing you’d do that you couldn’t necessarily have done before?

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - August 18, 2025

A good question, but not one Eydis had ever thought much about. Pee with my leg lifted, it's way cleaner for them. She could do it just fine, but it wasn't as convenient - only really served a purpose if she was trying to show off.

Alright, your turn. She paused for a moment, checking for any scents worth following. Truth or dare?

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - August 22, 2025

It would be nice to aim, Towhee agreed with an amused snort, before cryptically adding, although I’m glad I didn’t manifest all the man bits. Can you imaging having a dangly, vulnerable tube of flesh just flopping about all the time? No thanks. And dare, of course.

While she waited for Eydis to cook up something, she scanned their dark surroundings. She didn’t see much and of course she heard nothing at all. Towhee’s nose twitched as she sifted through the myriad scents wafting on the air, still warm even though the sun had set a while ago.

RE: I've got good intentions - Eydis - September 01, 2025

At Towhee's response, Eydis almost immediately flipped her head to get a look. No subtlety there. I never thought much about that. Seems like it is a pretty stupid feature. Wasn't evolution meant to stop things like that? Then again, she's a wolf. Hard to understand that sort of theory.

Clicking her tongue, she considered what Twohee's dare should be. Well, how do you feel about rabbit? They were hunting, so it seemed fair that her dare would be related. Let's look for a burrow. You can stick your muzzle in to try and grab one. It was tough when you were wolf sized, but anything a fox could do Eydis was sure they could do better.

RE: I've got good intentions - Towhee - September 01, 2025

That’s not very daring, Towhee mock-whined before adding a touch more seriously, If I manage to catch anything, we can share the meat but I call dibs on the skin. It would make a nice baby blanket.

Locating a burrow sounded simple in theory, though that didn’t make it easy. Although her nose was her strongest asset, the dark complicated things a little bit. Even when Towhee thought she smelled a trail, she couldn’t see any signs of a burrow. It wasn’t until she felt around with her paw that the Redhawk pinpointed a telltale depression on the forest floor.

Without hesitation, she replaced her foot with her snout. The smell was strong. Towhee sensed something scurrying just out of reach, deeper in the earth, but she couldn’t force her muzzle any further. With a huff, she pulled her head out of the burrow and shook literal dirt out of her ears.

Good thing I don’t use them anyway, she remarked to herself as she sat back on her haunches to paw some more debris from her right ear. Does that count for the dare, even though I didn’t actually grab anything? Towhee wondered, sitting upright as she tried to find Eydis’s face in the dark.
