We're sitting up above the sea - Lyric Redhawk - July 16, 2025

Time had passed so quickly! Already Lyric was growing lanky, beginning to appear outside the den to bark at packmates and bat at passing bugs. First words weren't expected for at least a couple more weeks, but with how expressive he was already Lyric may never need them.

Today's objective is to laze about, nothing more. The boy has found the perfect sunny spot, a place to cook himself just close enough to the den that he could run back inside should anything spook him.

He hadn't seen dad for a little while, but given his mother is his primary caregiver at this point of his life he isn't too concerned. His dad will come back sooner or later to poke at him and kiss mom, probably. Maybe Lyric would sing a song for him (it isn't a maybe, he always does) or simply stick to his mother like glue and smile. He's definitely a mama's boy.

RE: We're sitting up above the sea - Towhee - July 17, 2025

With her inability to eat or sleep properly in Killdeer’s absence, Towhee felt every bit of her nearly nine years of age. She intended to head out on patrol this morning, yet her body quite literally failed her. Halfway up the slope above the Hobbit Hole, her legs simply gave out and she sank to the ground. She lay there for a while, steadying herself, and when she was able to stand up again, she headed back to the den.

Lyric sprawled just outside its mouth, earning a wan smile from his ailing ancestor. Towhee padded up to the boy and slumped down beside him, arranging her limbs into a sphinx pose. She reached out a paw to cup his face, then noticed the terrible tremor in it and let it sink back to the ground. In its place, she bent forward to nuzzle the baby-soft fur just beneath his ear.

It was Towhee who joined him this morning, his lovingly named 'GG' as he had heard his mother say. His tail wagged in a fittingly lazy manner, watching his older relative with her shaky paws and aching bones. Lyric could only assume that she must be feeling lazy today too.

His head tipped to offer his best song; a high puppy howl. Maybe Towhee wouldn't hear it, but Lyric wasn't quite old enough to comprehend that. To him that wasn't what mattered much anyways; Towhee could see him, and he was sure that she would know he was showing his love.

Her own ears twitched as Lyric’s head tilted, as though they could hear the howl that left his little pursed lips. Of course, they couldn’t. Towhee watched, wondering despite herself. Was he loud? Did his voice carry? How far did it carry? It kind of made her brain itch, trying to wrap it around these things she had no real framework to understand.

She glanced at the den, wondering if Carolina was still asleep, then returned her attention to Lyric. He reminded her so much of Killdeer, it made her chest ache. Part of her wanted to pull him into her arms and weep. Though she was physically weak at the moment, Towhee summoned all her mental strength to stave off a breakdown.

-How are you today?- she signed to him, too choked up to articulate alongside her signing.

He and his sister were too young to comprehend Killdeer’s absence. It was a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it didn’t impact them in any meaningful way. And if he failed to return, they may not even remember him to miss him, which was the curse of it. Towhee drew in a shuddering breath, trying to push all thoughts from her mind and wait for Lyric to react to her question.

He couldn't quite articulate Ptero yet, not fully, but he could mimic. He was great at that. Watching what Towhee had done, he only repeated her actions this time - then a few more times, then what might have been equivalent to 'howhowhow' before appearing satisfied. But practice makes perfect, right?

Towhee was right to think he couldn't comprehend the absence of his father. He couldn't. Lyric had no way of understanding why everyone was so upset except for himself and Carolina, had they missed a meal? If Killdeer returned he would be able to move forward like his father had never been gone, but if he didn't? For a time Lyric would be fine, eventually he would forget Killdeer's face until one day he grew old enough to question why he had no such father figure in his life. Maybe then he would learn to be angry.

He mimed her movements, which was par for the course at his age. Towhee forced a small smile for him, reaching out to ruffle the short crop of fur atop his dark head. Her leg still shook a little, though not as badly as earlier.

-Are you hungry? Want to help grandma eat some breakfast?- she signed, wondering just how much of it he understood.

He still relied on Amalia’s milk, though he could handle some pre-chewed food as well. Towhee had no appetite at all, though she could try to mince some meat for him and try to eat a little herself. She wouldn’t regain her strength without some sustenance.

Motioning for her great grandson to stay put, she padded into the den, slipping past a dozing Amalia and Carolina. She plucked a hunk of venison out of the proverbial pantry in the back of the Hobbit Hole, then reemerged and settled back on the ground. She had to take a moment to let a momentary feeling of wooziness pass.

Keeping her orange eyes on the pup, she put her teeth to the meat, tearing off her first bite and turning it into a puree with her teeth. It was a relief to spit it out a moment later, rather than try to force it into her rebellious stomach.

If there were any words he definitely recognised, it was those that came before his meals. Tail thumping, he was happy to wait for Towhee to return with his second breakfast - most important meal of the day.

Quick to eat up what was offered to him, it was of no concern to him whether or not his great grandmother was able to eat herself. Kids are selfish like that at his age. He wasn't so used to sharing; having one littermate didn't create very much competition.

Finishing up the mince, he looked to Towhee clearly expecting more. If he could communicate further he would likely be saying something along the lines of 'don't be cheap lady!' What a gentleman.

Lyric took to the slurry immediately, which meant Towhee didn’t have to use up any energy convincing him. She looked on approvingly as he made quick work of the first course, then quickly served up a second. She would macerate all the meat he demanded.

She forced herself to swallow a few bites too, even kept them down for now. Towhee knew it wasn’t nearly enough to sustain a patrol, especially running on no sleep. But it was something, even if it only gave her enough energy to entertain her great grandson until his mother and sister woke.
