I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 27, 2025

Okay, so he had another brother in the Teekons. A brother who did not particularly like him.

He wasn't so good at planning ahead, so he decided that he wouldn't. Life in the pass was good, and so long as he stayed in the pass nobody outside of Verapaz could touch him - but he couldn't stay forever. There were expectations for him to deliver green again, and again, and again, and he would. Later.

For now he was content to sun himself in a high point of the territory, eyes half-lidded. How could he worry on such a bright day anyways?

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 28, 2025

Kemal did not like her. On her year-long pilgrimage north, Disa had found that not many wolves did. She was not particularly friendly, spoke without filtering her words – as everyone ought to, she thought – and was generally quite selfish.

This had served her well in the road. In a pack, it was a problem. Not for her feelings, but for her budding appetite for power. Disa could see herself on a throne.

So, Disa set out to sow the seeds of friendship – or a the very least, some shared experiences.

She found Arslan on a hill, roasting in the sun like a chestnut. "Cooking your meat for us? What a treat for the pack," she said, cresting the hill. It was warm.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 28, 2025

His peace was interupted by a woman, and though he did not know her by name Arslan was sure he had seen her before. It's a good day for it. The sun is high, and it's nearly the season for dispersals. Which meant new meat making it's way through unfamiliar territrory.

Who are you? He asked, stretching out a back leg. He knew he should get into the habit of being more guarded, but letting that sort of energy kick in would ruin his oncoming nap. Not worth it - he'd rather die sleepy.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 28, 2025

Did he mean prey or wolves? Maybe it was all the same. The bronzed wolf stretched out a dainty leg – he was smaller than Kemal and Dracarys, leaner, and looked as though he spent time on his coat.

"Disa," she replied, a little offended that he didn't know; word of her sacrifice ought to have spread. Disa sat, paws neatly together and unblinking eyes on Arslan's. "Are you related to any of the others? There's a lot of orange going around."

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 28, 2025

Kemal is my brother. Other than that, no. He offered in response. Did that many of them really have similar coats? I got the looks, if you can't tell. Fair game in his opinion, if Kemal was going to be the size of a bison he could look like one too.

Opting to be polite today, he gestured for Disa to lay down. The sun will feel good on your back.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa's front paws slid forward in the dirt until her belly touched the ground, like a human trying and failing to use an ab roller.

"I suppose be does look a bit more... boxy," she said, squinting at Arslan's fine-boned face. "He mentioned siblings. Said you were careless, and that's why he worries so much. I suggested that worrying was stupid. He walked off." Perhaps Arslan would fill her in on why his brother was so sensitive.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Ah, was that why she was here then? I'd say I'm more relaxed than I am careless. He insisted, laying his head down on his paws. That's just how Kemal is. He's always had a lot of responsibility put on him, so I think it might be habit at this point. Or the dead wife thing, that would do it.

Don't take him walking off personally. He's kind of socially awkward. Arslan had taken the charisma, too. Still fair game.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa shrugged to indicate that she had not. Kemal had all but ambushed her to get a look at the bison's work – twice! Disa shifted, assuring herself that the wound was out of view. "Why does he not get a new wife?" she suggested. "@Safiya looks old enough. They are friends." She had seen them spar and interact – as good a foundation for a mateship as any.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Arslan shook his head after a moment of consideration. That isn't how it works in our culture. When you find a mate you stick to them even after death, unless someone shows they're a superior partner. He wasn't so sure how it worked on the female side of things, but he could guess. Our father took out our mother's first family to mate with her, show of strength and all that, but that's out of the question now. Can't really kill her twice.

He really loved her. I think she was pregnant, too. So he missed out on pups. You think a baby trap would work? He asked, lightening up rather quickly. It wasn't a nice thought.. but the drama!

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa didn’t miss a beat. "Safiya is strong," she said, though it pained her to praise competition. "She killed the bison. And nobody is around to police him, if you are the only two here. Unless you think he should be sour-faced stain upon the desert for all time."

She took a long moment to consider his suggestion, studying the ground with furrowed brows. A mean little smile split her face. "That would require... a master chemist. Something to knock them both out and something to make the act work. And muscle to move them into position."

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Arslan dismissed her initial statement - it didn't matter if he didn't care, Kemal was a sucker for tradition.

Isn't nature the best chemist? He suggested, an eyebrow raised. She has to be getting old enough for.. you know. He's still a man, the lady words are too scary. Shove them into a cave, then magically I'll have nieces and nephews. Right? That's probably how it worked, not that he had ever tried.

Pursing his lips, Arslan thought back to when Leto had her children. But, that also means she'll jump in ranks. Leto was promoted to Countess after she had her pups. What did that mean, anyways? But if you're okay with that,

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa considered this. "There's a pit we can shove them into," she mused. "But a cave might be the better. Less light, too, if they're prudish."

For all their joking around, she was very invested in the pairing – even if it would elevate Safiya above her for the time being. "Is that how it works, here? Have babies, get a promotion? What about.." Disa licked her teeth. "..taking down the king? Hypothetically."

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Mmhm, as far as I can tell.

Disa's following question forced him to raise a brow. Well if someone did that, they would need help. Someone with a reason to be loyal. He responded. Not everyone would be willing to turn over so easily.

Arslan wasn't as dense as he makes himself out to be, he knew what she was implying. You can't kill Soto. Who would he harass then?

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa rolled her eyes. "What a manly response from a man. He would obviously need to be alive to hand the throne to me. Hypothetically, " she added with a mock stern look; it did not mattervto her if her talk got back to Soto.

Her gaze drifted to the river below them, following it to the rock that shielded the plants. "What sold you on spreading the herb around?" A pause, eyes still on the distant nursery. "Have you tried it?"

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

He promptly rolled his eyes at her response. I don't care if you want to lead Verapaz, I don't care who leads the pack at all. He responded.

I stay here and I deliever the green because he held my interest. Soto had been new and shiny, and even after that he had managed to live up to the expectations Arslan held. He was not the one leading Verapaz at first. He has always been the second. He wasn't so sure what had happened to Osiel, however.

Turning his head to it's side for a better look at her, he gave a new suggestion. You want power, why don't you have the babies? Leto is with her son, so you would be the highest in the pack next to the Segundo. A good partner, and you could easily knock Soto down.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa continued to stare at their territory as he spoke, adding the fragments to her mental picture of Verapaz and its gardener. She had made no plans beyond tracking down the source of the poison – here it was, and the next step was not clear. Would Soto care about a power grab if he was happy to be number two? Would he just fall in line and continue to peddle his nefarious little leaves?

"Who do you suggest?" she asked, turning back to face him. She would let him think that she was only after power. If nothing else  having babies would pass the time – and strengthen her position when they were grown. "You are clearly a mercenary, and Kemal is.. Kemal. Dracarys? Or maybe Soto himself. Dethroned by his own spawn." She grinned, but it hardened and cracked. "Who else is invested in the green?"

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Disa seemed to be asking his advice, so Arslan went through the list himself. You aren't my taste, if that wasn't obvious. Soto would be too difficult, he hasn't even tried to touch Leto and she may as well be begging for it. And uhh.. Who was Dracarys? The new guy he had seen around, he had to guess. An initiate is no good. What status do the babies get from that?

Kemal is my brother, it would be weird if I encouraged you to try and bang him. He'll make big babies, I guess. Not that he wouldn't make a bad evil sidekick either, being all big and stupid. Other than that, we do have allies in the caldera. Maybe one of them will be your taste.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

They were scheming like Verapaz was a pack of twenty, not six. There were no levels to conquer. "You don't need status if you have numbers," Disa pointed out. One mate, four pups, and a year or two to shape them. "Why is he difficult? Another sad man with a dead wife?" And had she imagined the tension in the air at their first meeting?

She queued up a question about Arslan's taste – if they were going to play matchmaker, he was next.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Arslan shrugged. In his opinion, reputation was important no matter where you were.

I'm not sure. He likes to keep it in his pants I guess, his one slip up was with some old hag. Maybe he's just into the oldies. Pausing, he quickly glanced around.. just to be safe. @Towhee still terrified him despite the brave words.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 29, 2025

Disa looked visibly confused. If she did not have to bear the burden of birth, she would exist in a perpetually pantsless state and spread heirs around her like dandelion fluff. "How odd," was all she said, but could not help but wonder who this 'hag' was that had caught Soto's eye.

"And who are we pairing you up with?" she asked, "Are you also into the elderly?"

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 29, 2025

Nope, men. He responded rather promptly. You plan on growing a pair? That one was just teasing, but you wouldn't know it from his tone. I'll have kids one day, but with a woman? No. She can go after they nurse. It was cruel, he knew that, but it was probably better than the birds who just stole eggs.

Know any good guys? Despite his snicker, he wouldn't act even if she answered with an earnest suggestion. Kemal still didn't know, in fact Disa might have been the first wolf he told outright.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 30, 2025

Disa's face went through the full gamut of expressions – surprise, confusion, both about the logistics of a man loving another man and surrogacy, for which she did not have a name. When she was done with all her thoughts, she grinned. Long ago and not so far away, a wolf similar to Disa had crushed her friend for simply being herself. That did not happen today.

"I will... keep a look out for eligible bachelors," she found herself saying.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Arslan - July 30, 2025

Arslan gave a 'hm' in response, pushing to a stand a moment after. And I, for you. A fair trade, he thought, and a good base for friendship. If you decide to travel for your man after all, let me know ah? I've been wanting to get out. For a break, for a chance to sell green, it didn't matter.

I need to stretch my legs. Enjoy the sun for me. Flashing a grin, Arslan felt comfortable taking his exit seeing as the two of them appeared to be on good terms.

RE: I don't know what's going on, but it's gonna get better - Disa - July 30, 2025

Disa offered a nod, a "Bye", and watched him leave. When he was out of sight, she rolled to her side and let the wound bake in the heat while she mulled over all she had learned.
