New Cydonia. - Towhee - July 31, 2025

Recovery wasn’t instantaneous. But @Killdeer had come home and Towhee’s appetite, energy and—let’s be real, her will to live—had returned with him. Day by day, she felt her vitality returning to her, boosted by every glance at her grandson, every waft of his scent. She could finally sleep again too, without worrying about nightmares.

But something strange was happening. At least, that’s the only word Towhee could think of as she plodded around the caldera’s rim following a brief catnap. Every night since that fateful day when she’d been so sure she wouldn’t live to see another sunrise, Towhee had dreamt of Maxim. They were all very vivid. And when she was awake—like right now—she swore she could feel his presence.

It was really weird, especially since she didn’t consider herself particularly spiritual, but it was also strangely comforting. Towhee pondered it as she gazed out at the sprawling wilderness beyond the caldera, her stride even but not particularly hasty. It was as she gazed in a northerly direction that she suddenly realized she felt a second presence today.

Guys, look, Towhee found herself saying out loud, I love and miss you every day. But what the fuck? This shit is creepy. She gave a random spot of thin air the hairy eyeball. I know I came close to joining you but I’ve decided to live a little longer, so, like… She waved a paw, then caught herself and let out a surprised laugh, Wait, do I even believe in this shit? I would say ‘no’ but I’m not so sure anymore, with you two haunting my ass.

RE: New Cydonia. - Cinar - August 01, 2025

Cinar had spent much of his time in solitude since returning to the caldera, a classic brooding villain in disney movie fashion. Good thing he hadn't fallen off any cliffs yet, too.

Moving about the outside of the caldera in one of these many angst sessions he was pleased to spot Towhee out and about. Alivia had been worried, so this would be something good to report the next time he saw her. Strangely the old woman seemed to be chatting with something, prompting a fair question once he approached; Towhee, who are you talking to?

RE: New Cydonia. - Towhee - August 01, 2025

She really didn’t know what to believe, though one of the presences—she couldn’t be sure which one—warned her that someone was approaching. Towhee turned and found it was true, which made her fur stand on end. She quickly smoothed it, lest Cinar think she was angry with him. It would serve him right for sneaking up on her, only…

She blinked owlishly at him, as if she didn’t understand the question, before saying, Myself, doy. Do you see anyone else around here?

Maybe he would think she was going senile. Maybe she was going senile. Towhee pondered this for a moment, until the smaller presence—her long-dead daughter—insisted she wasn’t. Somehow, the aging Redhawk didn’t quite believe her.

Deciding she didn’t want to dwell on all of this just now, Towhee asked, What’s up?

She was truly curious. What was he doing up here? How was he? That made her think of the rest of the pack. Towhee knew she owed some friendly visits, particularly after her melancholic malaise the past few weeks. She might even owe some apologies to the likes of Delos, Leto, @Wagtail and Whip. She made a mental note to make it up to each of them.

RE: New Cydonia. - Cinar - August 01, 2025

Cinar thought the answer strange, but chose to let it go. Everyone had strange habits, he couldn't judge too much.

I thought I needed a walk, that's all. He responded in turn to her question. Today is nice enough. It wasn't overly bright, just enough clouds in the sky to occasionally cover the sun.

Pushing out a breath, he thought to say the obivous. It's good to see you out again. Alivia was worried, I'm sure everyone else was too. Eyeing the senior he wouldn't speak further on it yet, it didn't feel fair to bombard her with sympathies and questions.

RE: New Cydonia. - Towhee - August 04, 2025

You thought? she teased, her chest twinging a little when she realized she felt up to something like banter. You’re not wrong, she added, then lapsed into silence as Cinar told her it was good to see her, though he cited Alivia as the worrier rather than himself.

I can’t take life’s punches as well as I used to, she said after a moment, hating that it was true, and losing a child or grandchild is one of life’s meanest. But I don’t want to dwell on that anymore. He’s back, he’s okay and, like you said, it’s a beautiful day.

She motioned with a foreleg, her inquisitive expression suggesting, Let’s get walking? Towhee took a few slow steps, glancing ahead along the ridge line as she did. She felt three distinct presences walking in her wake. She turned her head, waiting for Cinar to catch up and walk beside her.

I’ll check in with Livi soon, she said, picking up on the thread he’d dangled. I owe a couple of house calls. Do you know if all the newbies are settling in, by any chance?

She supposed Whip was technically an oldbie but the sentiment remained. Towhee hoped all of the recent newcomers were feeling comfortable in the caldera, despite their rocky inceptions.

RE: New Cydonia. - Cinar - August 05, 2025

I understand. Loss like that turns ugly. It didn't matter how old you were, so long as you could understand the depth of it you could feel it's sting.

Towhee assured him that she would give a visit to Alivia, satisfying Cinar enough to join her in her walk. I haven't spoken to any of them since they arrived. He admitted. But if they're still here, I have to assume they don't mind. He raised an eyebrow after a moment, questioning just how many wolves Towhee knew. Sure, she had her fair share of years to meet each of them, but could she remember all those names and faces?

The caldera seems popular with newcomers as of late. He mused, Cinar reflecting on the new faces he had seen and met; Wagtail, small but fit enough for Cinar to think she could handle herself, and another woman larger than himself with a thick white coat. Those two both appeared to be viable hunters, capable of contributing.. and then there was Whip and the sickly child. Each were at opposite points in their lives where Cinar wasn't so sure how helpful they could be. Do you think we'll all be able to keep up with the caches? It's a lot of mouths to feed.

RE: New Cydonia. - Towhee - August 07, 2025

He didn’t have any intel for her, though he did remark on the recent influx of newcomers. It was strange—almost serendipitous—how many had come in the wake of Killdeer’s disappearance. Now that he was back, would they stick? Towhee didn’t think one had anything to do with the other, so she mused about it for a moment before discarding the thought.

Every single one of those mouths can feed itself, excepting the sprogs, Towhee pointed out when Cinar raised a concern, There’s eight—no, nine—of us who should be fully capable of hunting, by my count. I’m not worried about it. Her tail flicked before she asked, So, want to track down Livi with me?

RE: New Cydonia. - Cinar - August 14, 2025

Cinar wasn't so sure he agreed with Towhee's statement, but he wouldn't voice his opinion today. It was borderline hypocritical given he could barely smell prey.

Sure, I'd like that. He wondered if Alivia was still clearing out the old medic den - he had run off while they were brushing out the cobwebs, on his quest for drugs - or info about the drugs, that is. Not that anything had come of that, and not that he would speak of it to Towhee.

RE: New Cydonia. - Towhee - August 18, 2025

He agreed to accompany her while she hunted down Rue’s daughter. Towhee wondered if there was anything going on between them, though that was rather nosey of her. As she began to descend the caldera’s inner slope—ghosts in tow, she assumed—she decided it would be rude to ask. Then she remembered that she was the Redhawks’ token old lady. Invasive questions and general gossip fell under her purview. Besides, Ruenna would want her to suss out these deets in particular…

Are you two close? You and Livi? she asked innocently, turning her face sideways to catch Cinar’s knee-jerk reaction to the query.

RE: New Cydonia. - Cinar - August 18, 2025

Cinar wasn't daft, he knew when someone was trying to pry. I'd say we've become good friends. He responded. @Alivia was a nice girl, he didn't have any reason not to like her. They had come into the caldera together more or less, and she had been able to give him the scoop on how things worked. You're her grandmother, right? Or an auntie? He couldn't quite remember if the two were related, but Towhee seemed important to Alivia nonetheless.

Part of him wanted to call out the deputy for trying to sus him out, but he had nothing better to do than play her game.

RE: New Cydonia. - Towhee - August 18, 2025

Her question didn’t appear to faze him. She squinted, as if this might grant her X-ray vision and allow Towhee to see his intentions toward Alivia. But, of course, that didn’t work. Sorry, Rue, she thought, though I’ll keep prying. Idly, she wondered whether Alivia’s mom might come to haunt her too.

Auntie’s about right. More like Aunt T, Towhee quipped, cackling just like an old lady should. I look out for her in her mother’s stead, which means that it’s my responsibility to give any suitors third degree burns or however that saying goes… She flourished a paw in the air between steps. Although, look, I’m not actually much of a meddler… unless someone’s getting mistreated. Then I’ll snap some spines.

She nodded astutely, then motioned ahead toward the caldera. Let’s look around there, was the unspoken indication as she turned her toes in that direction. Her orange eyes didn’t see any pale figures along the shoreline, though it was vast. If they couldn’t spot her, they may be able to pick up a scent trail and follow it. Calling out might be more straightforward, but Towhee wasn’t in any particular rush.

We can probably fade this out and stay vague re: meeting up with Livi, especially ‘cause I just made another thread for her. Sound good to you? :)
