But she knows she can fly away - Fabienne - August 10, 2025

Fabienne never went very far from the sea. She was always at her side. The churning ocean always a welcome sound. Especially when she had so little interaction outside of her family.

She nibbled at a dead creature she had found in a half hidden cache left by someone who forgot. She explored the sandy beaches and the tide pools. Head lifted every now and again for trouble.

Hokulani's mind was long made up by now, but the beautiful coastline certainly did help. She would stay, and soon she would settle.

Tail swishing high, she held a hare in her jaws with clear pride. It was quite the catch, she thought! Though, the smell did stop her from noticing the strange pup before it was in her eyeline.

What was with the lonely kid? Where was it's parents? Hokulani couldn't help but raise a brow, and despite knowing better she made a muffled 'woof' to the little thing.

A wolf colored strangely in light and snow took her gaze. She had a meal in her jaws. Good for her. If she were her, Fabienne would not have brought such a catch near a wolf who could take.

Oui, puis-je vous aider ?

Then Fabienne waited a queen. As proud as this one. For she was a siren. A sea queen.

Hokulani raised a brow. Alright, so they might not share a common language. Not exactly a problem for her, Hokulani didn't need to speak.

Laying down with the hare held securely under her front legs, she tore off a piece and tossed it in the direction of the pup before beginning to eat. She didn't smell any other wolfish scents on the wind, so her assumption was that this one had been left alone. Hokulani didn't often feel sympathy, but it was hard not to in this case. They were a still so small.

Fabienne waited for an answer and didn't get one. Perhaps this one was not like her family. Did not speak creole or french. Too bad really, because Fabienne didn't speak common, even if she could understand some of it.  But there wasn't a real reason to speak. And sometimes even in the speaking things got lost in translation, literally and figuratively.

The meat soared through the air. Fabi watched it. When it landed, she gave it a cursory glance, eyeing the other wolf. When no attack seemed forthcoming, she took a bite.

Eyeing the child as she began to eat, Hokulani gave an approving nod.

It wasn't often that she found herself near children, so maybe she couldn't really know how to interact with them. It was only the calm demeanours of the adults in her younger days that told her how to act. This one seemed to be just fine with that.

She wanted to ask where her family was. But how? In the meantime, she attempted a simple question; Your name? It was a gamble whether or not she would be understood, but worth it.

Fabienne was not starving, but she would not turn away a free meal either.

Fabienne was or had been around more adults than children. Amd as such she had a quiet watchfulness to her. She was not on equal footing with this one.

She knew that one. Non mwen se Fabienne

She could recognize a name is the sentence. Fabienne. She repeated. It was not one familiar to her, but most names failed to be. Hokulani had never found her family's naming system outside of their own islands or coastline.

Finishing off her portion of the now shared meal, Hokulani picked up the bones and approached the water. The sea appeared calm today, and digging a shallow hole in the wet sand the remains were left. Her mother had taught her the practice when she was younger, but Hokulani had never bothered to abide by the arbitrary rules that made up the culture of her parents. Not until recently. Return it to the sea, yadda yadda yadda. It made more sense to her when the meal was fish.

A nod at the pronunciation. She had her name at least. But there wasnt much more Fabi could offer. Though she did dig in the sand. Unesrth a shell of sea colors. Plopped it down and pressed it forward.

Fabienne watched with silent approval the sea gives and takes. They did too. Or the sea took more. She thought of her family then. All gone. All she had was names.

RE: But she knows she can fly away - Hokulani - September 08, 2025

Her meal was finished, that meant it was time to move on.. but eyeing the child she felt so sorry for them. Nobody had come while they shared their meal as Hokulani had hoped. They didn't speak common, didn't seem to have a proper teacher, and she doubted that they were eating much more than scraps.

Damn - was she going soft?

Looking back to the pup, she lifted a paw to her chest. Hokulani, she eyed Fabienne, looking for a sign that she understood. That's my name.

She couldn't make them go with her, for all she knew somebody was coming back for the babe.. her future settlement could have room for them if not. Turning to leave eastward, she looked back to Fabienne, a wordless invitation to follow. Whether now or in the near future.

Fabienne lifted her paw a little. Eyes on the she wolf. orevwa Hokulani

Fabienne may decide to follow. But today was not that day. She dipped her head again amd watched while the she wolf grew smaller.
