inside your mind - Beau - September 09, 2025 In recent weeks, Beau felt that he was finally growing into himself. At three years old maybe it was a bit late, but weren't personalities always evolving? He had finally gathered his confidence in whole, gained a sense of seniority, and he could walk with his head held just a bit higher - so maybe he did have something to thank that sour pack girl for. Passing through the flatlands at a trot, he found himself growing excited for the months to come. It would be when most women were in season, and while he didn't care much for raising pups, he did enjoy the company of their mothers. Since leaving Verapaz and dreams of Leto behind, Beau had accepted that this lifestyle was the best for him; if the natural instinct was to want to help your genes survive by passing them on to children, why not take every provided opportunity to do so? It made more sense to him than continuing to follow hopes of love, mates, and settling in vain as so many men did. But until those sacred months, what was he meant to do? The flatlands could be so quiet despite recent visitors. He had considered the question many times over; thought to join a pack, but he had no real interest in living as a follower anymore. Thought to claim his own territory, but he hated to remain seditary, and he hated the weight of leadership. A couple wolves to walk with would would be nice, he thought, like in his days of cattle hunting. No pressure, no leaders, just familiar faces he could rely on. Maybe with this thought in mind, or maybe out of curiosity, he threw a howl into the air. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - September 28, 2025 Present-dated! Valiant has brought Ludovic out with him.
The howl was unexpected, after finding the land so empty in recent months. Valiant was cautiously optimistic as he helped back, and he began leading Ludovic away from the trail and off toward the stranger."Let's be cautious," he warned the boy, but his tail waved in reassurance. "He's probably just huntin', same as us." He'd heard there was a white elk running through the area, and he and Ludovic had been tracing different trails all morning in search of it. It had been slow going, with little reward, so a break to meet someone new might be just what Valiant needed to make the trip memorable for the boy. Plus — it wouldn't hurt to have another adult around, if they could convince the man to come and hunt with them. Either way, it would be good instruction for Ludovic. He did not know that Angel Oak had recently given a poor impression of the pack scent that they carried. "'Lo there," he called as they drew nearer to the howler. "Lookin' for anyone in particular, or will we do?" He did his best to keep himself between Ludovic and the stranger, for the moment. RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - September 29, 2025 Ludovic had been excited to follow Valiant on the hunt, as usual, but he wasn't quite so sure of meeting up with the stranger who they heard calling. He did not voice this opinion of course, and followed after Valiant with all the trust he could muster up. The man they met was tall, and a bit of a looker too. Ludo couldn't deny that it put him at ease.. when had he become so vain? RE: inside your mind - Beau - September 29, 2025 Those who responded to his call gave reason for Beau to worry. Their scents were familiar, not for the wolves themselves but the pack they carried with them. Had the packlands girl sent her daddy to beat him up? However, it was a man with a young boy who met him. They seemed friendly enough, not at all giving the impression of vengeful relatives. You'll do just fine.He snickered in response, tail waving behind him. Lookin' for a hunt? I could eat.It seemed like the logical course of action here, especially if a young'in was brought all this way. Eyeing the younger of the pair with a smile as the thought crossed his mind, he did seem quite healthy. Is he your boy? Looks real tough. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - September 29, 2025 The man was handsome, though Valiant couldn't tell until they were a conversational distance from each other. He didn't outwardly react, and unlike Ludovic, did not clock that he immediately liked the man just a little bit more. "We are," he agreed. "A white elk passed through here not long ago — I need the pelt off it, so there'll be plenty of meat to share." At the question about Ludovic, Valiant tried his best not to appear startled. He was pleased, in fact, by the assumption. "He sure is," Valiant replied, his tail wheeling, leaving which question he was answering rather ambiguous. "This is Ludovic. My name's Valiant. What's yours, partner?" He nudged Ludovic with his hip, offering encouragement. The male seemed friendly enough, and Valiant no longer felt the need to guard the boy too carefully. RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - September 29, 2025 Ludovic had been caught up in staring at Beau, only rejoining the conversation in front of him when Valiant spoke his name. Right - we're looking for an elk.He confirmed. ..And I'm Ludovic. He had always imagined lone wolves to be skinny things, but Beau was nothing like that! He wasn't sporting any scars either, Ludo thought he looked like a well-groomed pack wolf if anything. Maybe he was just a really good hunter. Whatever he was, Ludovic couldn't help the twitch of his tail. He did wonder if they would be abel to find the white elk - and if they did, how would they split the meat? How much would be taken for Moonglow? RE: inside your mind - Beau - September 29, 2025 A white elk. Beau had never heard of such a thing, but that only gave him reason to be curious. Guess he looks more like his mom then, yeah?He smiled, though if he had known Ludovic was adopted he probably wouldn't have said it at all. It was only meant to be casual conversation. You can call me Beau, good to meet you, Valiant and Ludovic. Clicking his tongue, he felt eager to get started. I haven't seen no white elk, so I'll let you two lead the way. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - September 30, 2025 Ludo repeated his name, and Valiant shot him a quizzical look. It did not bear commenting on, however, and neither did the idle question that Beau posed. "He sure does," he agreed, thinking of Pala, the one time that they'd met. But kids came out looking all sorts of ways, and Valiant had never thought much of it with his own flesh and blood — he wasn't about to start worrying about how Ludovic looked on top of all that. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Beau," he returned, and then it was straight back to work. He began leading the group back toward where he and Ludo had been tracking the scent of elk. "They was headed this way, off toward those trees," he said, indicating the thinning treeline up ahead. "We've been following tracks all morning, just between us — but I trust my source. If Angel says she saw a white elk up here, there's got to be one." He was curious, though, about the stranger. He could smell no pack on his pelt, but sometimes rangers could lose the scent out on the road. "Where's your pack?" he asked the male, distracted by his task of sniffing out their prey. RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - October 04, 2025 Ludovic felt his skin grow hot at Beau's comment. Unlike Valiant, he did worry how he looked in comparison to his adoptive family. His mother's doggish blood ran hot in his veins despite being the minority, and like her his features had grown into it. Some part of him was ashamed of that. He chose to focus on the task at hand, joining Valiant in sniffing out their prey. It was good practice for his first hunt outside of Moonglow territory, and he would much rather think about that. RE: inside your mind - Beau - October 04, 2025 Beau listened to Valiant in silence, watching the trees a head for any sign of movement. Don't have one.He responded to his question without hesitation. Haven't for..He paused, clicking his tongue, guess it'll have been a year in the spring. He had enjoyed his lone wolf life, though. Sorry, I ain't got no alliances for ya. He knew that for some pack wolves, hunting with a loner wasn't so appealing. He wouldn't hold it against them if Valiant decided to take his son elsewhere to hunt. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - October 07, 2025 A year! That was a long while to go it alone, though Valiant had roved with Dutch for quite a bit longer. Still, Beau looked well fed and healthy, and that was impressive for the amount of time he'd spent on his own. Valiant shot him a smile, his tail whisking. "Just plain old conviviality'll do," he replied. They carried on, Valiant stealing a few glances back at Ludo. He was half worried for, half impressed by the boy. His quietness could either mean discomfort or extreme focus. Either way, Valiant didn't think it was best to confront him about it now. They had work to do, after all — and it was finally paying off. "Spore's fresh," he noted, pressing his nose into a hoofprint at the treeline. He kept his voice low. "Should be easy enough to spot in there — Angel said it was so white it almost glowed." It's a small stand of trees, so feel free to have Beau or Ludo find it in your next post!
RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - October 07, 2025 Stood at the treeline, Ludovic couldn't see much from where he was positioned. His nose told him the elk were close, and so did Valiant. He wouldn't dare move closer for fear of either spooking the ungulates, or worse, still seeing nothing. He was determined to have this go well, for the sake of Valiant scoring that pelt and for his own pride. Eyeing the pair of adults, he wondered what they would do next. RE: inside your mind - Beau - October 07, 2025 Admittedly, Beau had been extremely lucky. The flatlands were left empty of packs until recent months, a fortunate turn for a lone wolf. Prey flourished, and so did the predators who hunted them down.. and then left behind carcasses. He had scouted out all the best spots for scavenging, and would hunt smaller prey on his own from time to time. It was only now that more pack wolves were flooding in to hunt that he had any sense of worry. Carefully moving forward, Beau spotted what they were looking for. A white elk.. straight in the middle of a herd. Well.. it's there. He murmured, some nerves prickling up his spine now. They better hope it was a slow one. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - October 27, 2025 It did not take them long to find the herd. Valiant spotted the elk they were looking for a moment after Beau pointed it out. They hung back for a long moment, watching, before Valiant gestured for them to move away from the herd. "I don't see the bull right now, but I can smell him," he said to his two companions in a low voice. "We gotta get her separated from the others if we don't wanna tangle with him. Let's go in, see if we can get a bleed on her, and try and herd her toward Moonglow." He turned his attention more fully to Ludo. "I want you to stay away from their hooves, alright?" he said to the boy, more command than question. "'Specially if the bull shows up. Be aware of your surroundings — just get outta there if he sets his sights on you. Those antlers can run a wolf straight through. Once we get the white elk separated, and get her tired out a bit, we can see about having you practice hamstringin' her." He looked between the two, waiting for their input. Feel free to PP the hunt starting if they both agree to this!
RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - October 31, 2025 Ludovic nodded along to Valiant's instruction. He had heard plenty of horror stories about wolves being impaled by antlers and trampled by hooves, he would be careful. Today was meant to primarily be watching. It was only a moment later that he saw the older pair streaking ahead; the hunt had begun. Ludo hung back for the time being, close enough to stalk the herd but far enough to be safe. He was still young enough that he was meant to be cautious. RE: inside your mind - Beau - October 31, 2025 Beau snapped at at legs and growled at reared hooves, listening for the alarm call of the bull. The elk were already uneasy, and he knew that soon they would take off running with or without a bull to accompany them. They could be independent ladies. Eyeing Valiant, he barked a warning; nervous glances from the herd had turned closest to his direction, and Beau's guess was that the bull was somewhere that way. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - November 01, 2025 Together, he and Beau worked to separate the white cow from the rest of the herd, dodging between hooves at first, and soon enough, only nipping at the heels of their prey in question. Just in time, too — the bull came charging from the denser woods, and Valiant shouted for Ludovic to keep clear, just in case he'd somehow forgotten. It was a dicey few moments. The cow seemed to see benefit in staying near to the bull, and it was more difficult to convince her to part from him than from the rest of her herd. Soon enough, however, her terror caused her to break free from her herding instincts and instead give in to the urge to flee. The three wolves took off after her, leaving the bull to brood over his other females. This one, Valiant thought with satisfaction, was lost to him. They followed her now at a trot, back out in the open. Valiant paused to sniff at a spattering of blood in the grass, noting the vibrant color of it, and the rich, hot smell. "We got her good," he said to his partners. "Let's catch up. Test her a little. She's got a lotta rabbit in her — but once me'n'Beau get enough wounds on her, you can practice some pouncin'." We can skip to that part, if you like! I would also be happy to skip to the end of the hunt, where we can do a round of "woohoo good job everyone" and then close lol
RE: inside your mind - Ludovicus - November 02, 2025 Sounds good to me! I'll write in some practice munching in this reply and then we can skip, this is the last thread I need for Ludo's trade! There might be a lil pp, so just let me know if something needs changing
Things were going well enough, and Ludo beamed when Valiant promised him he could have a go at the elk. It took some time, but the older males managed to weaken the cow enough that Ludo felt confident giving it a try. He followed Valiant's instructions as carefully as always, never holding on long enough that she could get a hit on him. It was a good lesson, but in the end it was up to the adults to finish her off. RE: inside your mind - Beau - November 02, 2025 There was a good chase, a lesson for the kid, and then the elk was finished off. Beau felt satisfied with his part in the hunt. It was good huntin' with ya.He smiled, nodding to the pair. How're we splittin' the meat? I don't need much.Enough to feed himself for a few days would be nice. He was looking forward to a meal that didn't reek of cougar. He found some amusement in just how pleased Valiant's boy looked. Beau had remembered being all giddy like that after his first cattle hunt. RE: inside your mind - Valiant - November 06, 2025 Valiant was panting by the end, pleased as punch with both the spoils and with Ludo's progress. "You did real good, son," he praised, his tail wheeling high in pride. Reluctantly, he dragged his gaze from the boy to Beau. A grateful smile on his face. "Thanks for the help, partner. Take as much as you want — just mind the pelt. Let's eat our fill, carefully, and then I'll skin it proper when we're done. We can parcel it out afterward. We'll take enough home it won't spoil while you're workin' on it." He smiled at Ludo again. Valiant helped to open the kill up, exposing fresh meat to the hunting party. okay let's be done before we get deep into the new hunting threads lol
