a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 09, 2025 From here Hokulani could see the isalnd she wished for, and yet it was not excitement that filled her chest this time. She could read where the ocean allowed a passage, see where the tide would drag her out on the journey, but would others be able to? What Hokulani wanted was an empire of sorts, and if others could not reach her then an empire would never come to be. It seemed to her that the better strategy would be to remain on the mainland. A territory with access to the ocean, close enough to packlands that dispersals and wandering loners may come across her. She felt that this may work, give her a chance to build a life, and when the time was right she could move onto that island with a pack in tow. As she stood upon the short mountain, she scanned the visible coastline. Where would be best? Somewhere with a view of the island, so she could guard what was hers. That would be best. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 No, he hadn't been searching for Katmai the whole time! He'd certainly seen the kid since the last time he'd spoken with Hokulani — but he'd lost him. Again. And now he was hot on his nephew's trail when he ran into her again. He'd liked her just fine, even if they'd decided not to travel together. It was just embarrassing to run into her on the exact same mission as before. At least he had a trail, this time. "We gotta stop meetin' like this, 'Lani," he said as he approached, just a little out of breath from the climb. RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 At the sound of a familiar voice, Hokulani's head twisted to meet Kindle's eyes. Oh! Well, you're quite the surpise. Her grin revealed just how pleased Hokulani was. It had been months since they last met, but she couldn't deny that she had thought about that day plenty since. Making the short trot to greet him with a series of sniffs, she had to wonder if he still hadn't found his nephew. She couldn't smell others on his coat, not strongly at least. What brings you to the coast, Blackbear? He had put her back into the good mood that usually coated her demeanour, forgetting about her business on the small mountain for the moment. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 Kindle's head twisted as yet another bird shrieked and dove — but this one wasn't attacking him, and so his attention quickly returned to Hokulani. His tail swung in idle happiness as they exchanged scents; he noted that Hokulani seemed just as alone as he was, just as she noted this about him. "The boy's runnoft again," he replied, stepping past her to look down at the valley, rather than down at the coast. "He's down there somewhere. Probably visiting our cousin. I heard him yowling the night before." He looked back over his shoulder at the pale woman. "What're you up to these days?" he asked her. RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 So he was searching for they boy again. At least he seemed to have a good idea of where he was this time. She seemed to ignore the swooping bird entirely, much too used to their presence at this point in her life. It was a side effect of living on the coastlines for as long as she had. Well, I'm scouting for a territory, believe it or not.She responded, looking back out to her island perched in the ocean. I've decided that I'm tired of being a follower. I'd much rather live in my own culture with wolves looking to me for instruction. And was that so much to ask for? I want somewhere that I can see that island out there. I'll move there eventually, but I'd like to gather enough wolves for it to be worth it first. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 His brows jumped, but he said, "I believe it." Wolves got to be a certain age and all. It'd hit Katmai a little earlier, it seemed — and had passed him by entirely. Kindle squinted out at the island she spoke of, but couldn't say for certain which one it was. He'd never been to Wheeling Gull, only heard stories — but he asked her now: "Wheeling Gull Isle?" Maybe it was called something different, now. Kindle wasn't overly concerned. It'd be nice, he thought, if he could go home and tell his mother who lived there, now. "What's your culture like?" he asked her, settling on his haunches nearby. He felt able to address her familiarly, sure, but they knew little about one another. RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 He revealed the name of the island she had spent so long wondering about, and Hokulani nodded. She supposed that it was fitting. When he questioned her about her culture, Hokulani didn't answer right away. She didn't know as much as she pretended to, but this was good practice on selling the idea that she did. Well, it creates a lot of hard-headed men, that's for sure. It's all about connecting to the ocean, growing into an asset for your pack, and creating community. That sort of thing. Those were the basics, though she supposed a lot of cultures shared similar beliefs. The old guy who made it up thought he could speak to spirits and predict the future.. now we just leave that to elders, and the occasional special kid. She wasn't too interested with boring him with the naming system, the whole concept of honour, or the ceremonies she missed more than she was willing to admit. I probably need to work on my pitch, huh?She snickered, returning her gaze to Kindle. If I have any hope of going through with this, I have to convince some dude to put up with it and give up on his kids ever having last names. You don't see a lot of Coastal Spiritualists wandering through here, so I think I'll have to find someone willing to convert. From what she had always seen, wolves who only put one paw in the ring were pretty frowned upon. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 He was intrigued when she confirmed that the island she wanted was one that he knew of. His thoughts drifted, though his ears remained cupped toward her, and he looked out at Wheeling Gull once more. Perhaps he would go and visit. He imagined Katmai would certainly want to. "My grandfather gave up his name for his mate," he offered in consolation. "For a sea wolf, too. I'm sure you'll be able to sucker someone into it." He turned his head just enough to wink at her, but it was clear there were other things on his mind when he looked back at the island. "She had relatives there," he told her. "Out on that island. It's a good place for wolves. Peaceful. That's what I've been told, anyway." RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 Kindle attempted to reassure her, but Hokulani was well aware that such a thing was easier said than done. Men tended to take it horribly personally when a woman wanted her children to follow her traditions, yet it was expected that she submit when it was the other way around. Yeah well, we'll see. I haven't found any suitors yet, so I'm probably thinking too far ahead. It felt cruel to brush Kindle off like that, they had certainly hit it off, but even if she did like him the truth was that her first heat would likely come before he reached maturity. It made more sense to look into other options in the meantime. I hope you're right about the island. She sighed, her tail swishing once behind her. I've always liked them, for the security. It doesn't make sense to go there now though - nobody would be able to find me. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 Kindle made a vague sound — also of consolation. It was hard to imagine a girl like Hokulani wasn't out there turning heads, but he supposed he hadn't met a whole lot of wolves in the area. Perhaps she would find a pirate out there on the coast. Like the stories that he'd so often heard. "I've never been too keen on islands — or the sea, really," he admitted, his nose wrinkling just a fraction. "But I hope it's all you're looking for. I trust my mother, anyway, and she says it's a real special place. She visited when she was just a girl, and she's never forgotten it." Kindle offered her a warm smile. "I'll send any handsome bachelors I meet your direction," he told her. RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 It shocked Hokulani too, whenever she didn't manage to turn heads. She knew perfectly well how she looked, and frankly it was offensive that she didn't have more wolves around to appreciate it. It's what I grew up with, so I guess it's just sentimental. Not much like my home, but just as salty.Hokulani never had been one for sentiments, though. The oceans draw was simply undeniable. It was in her blood. Bumping her head into his neck fur, Hokulani couldn't help but return the smile. Hey, send them even if they're ugly! Just make sure he's a little dumb. That was the important part! Dumb men always made good husbands, that was what her mother said. RE: a million polaroids - Kindle - September 11, 2025 His nose wrinkled again, more noticeably this time, and he flapped a paw at Hokulani in retaliation. He couldn't imagine life with a dumb man, or a dumb woman, for that matter. Especially a dumb, ugly man. "If it pleases you," he said, sounding dubious. And then: "Maybe I'll stop by with my nephew sometime. He's dumb as rocks." But he stood, then, making ready to take his leave. "Take care of yourself, Hokulani. And, y'know, knock 'em dead and all." RE: a million polaroids - Hokulani - September 11, 2025 You stuck out her tongue at the suggestion. What do you take me for? I can't marry a rogue!Or a kid, given his nephew was probably younger than him. Hokulani wasn't ready to be a cougar. But, it seemed that it was time for Kindle to go. She couldn't help but feel disappointed. Good luck, Kindle. She responded, tail thumping against the ground. You know, with finding my husband. And your nephew I suppose. She did hope that he would take that trip with his nephew sooner or later. The coast, for all it's beauty, could get lonely. |
