Crush toast. - Towhee - September 15, 2025

Towhee woke up today and chose acceptance. She was sick of the endless internal monologue re: her fertility. She would just let nature run its course, whatever that meant, and try to live in the present rather than fret about the past, the future, the what-ifs—all of it.

Practicing what she preached, the Elder roused early, performed a rigorous patrol of the caldera’s rim, then went looking for breakfast. She returned to the Hobbit Hole late in the morning, a rabbit in her belly and another in her mouth. The latter wasn’t quite dead, though two of its hind legs were broken and unbeknownst to her it was screaming pitifully.

She rather unceremoniously dropped the poor creature just outside the entrance to the Hobbit Hole. Towhee let it flop around in the dirt as she woofed a note to @Carolina Redhawk and @Lyric Redhawk. With a flick of her tail, she then trotted upward to perch on the hillock just over the den’s wide doorway, giving herself a great view of whatever the pups did with the doomed rabbit.

RE: Crush toast. - Carolina Redhawk - September 15, 2025

Carolina had been napping, but the smell of blood nearby was quick to draw her out of slumber. She came awake all at once, rocketing to her toes almost before she knew what was happening. Her ears cupped eagerly toward the sound of pawsteps, but they were moving away from her —

The pup burst forth from the den, intent on chasing down the adult in question and wrestling the blood smell from their jaws. All thought fled her mind, however, when she locked eyes with the terrified rabbit in front of her. It seemed to realize at that moment that it was still alive, and thus attempted to dart away from Carolina's puppyish pounce.

They were off to the races, then. The rabbit wobbly and frantic, and Carolina behind it, clumsy and determined. She made no squeaks or growls, but there was a racket of flying fur and thumping legs each time she caught up enough to try and wrestle the thing down. Even broken legs kicked, though, and the rabbit still bit well enough. She would be fine — but it was proving to be an embarrassingly even fight, for the moment.

RE: Crush toast. - Lyric Redhawk - September 15, 2025

Lyric emerged from the den in time to see his sister chasing the pitiful thing, and for the moment his ears shot back.. then again, it was better than Carolina chasing him.

He felt intent on helping, partially so he could help himself to a piece of the carcass. Bounding towards the wrestling pair, he bit the rabbit straight in the butt.

The rodent, clearly overwhelmed by the two puppies now on it, whipped it's head to face the darker furred brother. He wasn't looking to be bit, given his eyes were practically screaming for Carolina to bite the thing before it got him.

RE: Crush toast. - Towhee - September 15, 2025

Fire blazed from the den first, quickly followed by smoke. Towhee’s lips curved into a predatory grin as she observed her descendants’ killer instincts. She thought she’d seen a particularly fierce streak in Carolina, though both children proved quite ferocious as they chomped at the poor, shrieking rabbit.

The Elder did not make herself known as she watched the scene unfold. They lacked finesse, which was at the prey’s peril, but Towhee knew the Redhawks would refine them as hunters as they grew. While she waited for the killing blow to land, she did some quick mental math and realized the pups’ first pack hunting experience would fall in the dead of winter.

Many would consider that bad luck, though Towhee knew it was the best time of year to pursue ungulates, particularly in heavy snow. While dreams of bringing down big game danced in her head, her orange eyes followed every movement as the miniature hunt continued playing out below.

You two can skip me for a few rounds, just tap me back in when they’re done and/or they notice her. :)

As soon as Lyric joined the game, tides shifted in their favorite. Two on one, their prey was quickly subdued — and Carolina delivered a devastating (though still only puppy-strength) bite to the rabbit's throat. Blood finally poured forth instead of just seeping, and her heart kicked into overdrive at the somewhat unfamiliar flavor.

Fresh. She liked it.

And, for the first time, her brother was not her prey, but her hunting partner. Her own blood sang with the rightness of it. Clumsy and childish as their efforts had been, it was an important lesson to the young girl. Her tail spun in erratic circles, and she grinned wide around the rabbit that was still kicking weakly in their combined jaws.

RE: Crush toast. - Lyric Redhawk - September 17, 2025

This was far better than being chased, and it certainly felt good to be working together. Lyric's tail wagged rhythmically, watching blood drip to the ground beneath them.

Recalling the lesson with his mother, Lyric shook the rabbit to ensure it was dead - leading to the satisfying crack of little bones as Carolina held onto the other end. He was thrilled, and excited by the idea of showing their catch to their parents. Wouldn't they be pleased!

Releasing the carcass from his now blood-touched jaws, Lyric's eyes were bright. Should we show mom? Or GG? Or dad? We basically just saved everyone. After all, the rabbit had been an intruder! A small, fluffy intruder.. but still a successfully defeated intruder.

RE: Crush toast. - Carolina Redhawk - September 30, 2025

The sound of bones cracking and the jerk of flesh between her teeth could only trigger one response: Carolina was playing tug, now, and put all of her bodyweight into it just like always. She growled viciously (adorably, because she was still just a puppy) and attempted to yank the prize free of her brother's jaws — only to fall on her ass when he was content just to have the rabbit dead.

Carolina panted while he spoke, winded from the chase and stressed by his lack of aggressively, obsessively competitive spirit. It was between one sharply drawn breath and the next that she declared,

"Gigi."

RE: Crush toast. - Lyric Redhawk - October 02, 2025

Lyric gave a firm not in agreement, turning back towards the den, and feeling eyes on him, looked up.

GG! He yelped, jumping back directly into his sister. It was quite the surprise to see @Towhee above the entrance to the den. He had never considered that a wolf could get up there, really.

The cogs in his brain were turning now. Had Towhee brought the rabbit in? Or was she up there because she was scared of it?

RE: Crush toast. - Towhee - October 03, 2025

The puppies veritably destroyed the rabbit, which at least put a swift end to its suffering. Towhee’s orange eyes glowed like hot coals as Carolina crushed its throat and Lyric gave the limp body a few savage shakes for good measure. Yes, they had very good instincts. Their great grandmother glowed with pride, even when Lyric let go and sent his sister tumbling hard onto her rump.

They spoke to one another, though Towhee couldn’t quite catch what they were saying at this angle. Her head darted back and forth, looking for context clues, but before she could suss out the gist of their conversation, Lyric suddenly spotted her. He startled, earning a fond snort as the Elder pushed onto all fours.

Well done, you two, she praised, tail swinging upward, the tip twitching back and forth. You should eat it, since you earned it. But if you’re not hungry, we should put it in a cache.

She would repeat today’s exercise a few more times, until the pups worked up to uninjured quarry. When that day came—and Carolina and Lyric successfully dispatched their prey—Towhee thought it would be a great time to graduate them from Nestlings to Fledgelings.

RE: Crush toast. - Carolina Redhawk - October 03, 2025

Carolina spun to face the new threat with her fur standing on-end, having failed to process the name nor the tone in which it had been yelped. She only processed noise — and then forgot just as quickly that Lyric had spoken at all when she caught sight of their great-grandmother.

The vestiges of her shock remained, however. The extra adrenaline and heightened emotion translated to savage joy, and she danced in place as Gigi stood to speak to them.

With a little warning, she understood words just fine. She looked back to the rabbit, which was boring now that it wasn't moving. Being a freshly plump and well-fed young lady, the idea of more play was far more appealing than more food.

"We can't play with it anymore?" she asked, making her best, biggest, most soulful puppy dog eyes at her elder.

RE: Crush toast. - Lyric Redhawk - October 13, 2025

Lyric couldn't help smiling when their great grandmother joined them, his tail wheeling at her praise.

They certainly were well fed, but for Lyric that had only made him greedy for food. He was a growing boy! He joined his sister in her dance at the suggestion of a meal, but promptly stopped when she proclaimed that she preferred to continue playing.

But I want to eat it! He pouted. You'll get it all dirty in the good spots. Most of their food was covered in dirt by default, but that didn't matter! Towhee had said they earned it, he should get to eat.

RE: Crush toast. - Towhee - October 27, 2025

Carolina raised a third option, which Lyric quickly protested. Towhee looked back and forth between them. She could let them resolve this among themselves, though she didn’t want an argument to spoil this bright spot in the pups’ development. Besides, there was another lesson to be learned here.

No, Caro, you eat it or you cache it, Towhee responded with authority. If you want a plaything, I’ll bring you something else. But once a kill’s been made, we don’t play with our food. It’s an important resource.

Lesson relayed, the Elder gave her great grandchildren an imperious look, followed by a soft smile. They deserved a prize for their job well done. Towhee would be happy to fetch them one. Make that two, she noted to herself, still hoping to avoid any fights.

Make your decision, then execute it. Better get done before I get back, else you don’t get your trophies, were Towhee’s parting words as she trotted off to find a sufficient rewards.

Last post from me! You can infer she brought them whatever you wish. :)

RE: Crush toast. - Carolina Redhawk - October 28, 2025

Carolina was frustrated; Gigi's word was law, but she really wanted to play with the rabbit. Even so, she felt chastened by the words, and even she knew that a dead rabbit was far less fun than a live one. There was hardly any hunting left to be done, even though her blood was still charging through her veins.

"You can eat it," she said glumly to her brother, watching Gigi's retreating back. She thought about going after the older wolf's tail, but her lawful nature kept her from acting on the impulse. When it was Gigi, anyway.

Last from me!
