mother - Ludovicus - September 18, 2025

The day had been long.

His morning was bright, clear of clouds while he ran to the lake with hopes of practicing his fishing. He had caught his breakfast, ate, and returned to Raindrop for a while before leaving to watch a hunting party at noon. Ludovic had left that feeling satisfied, and decided to go for a walk to reflect on what he had seen and learned.

It was then, in a clearing just outside of Moonglow, that he saw a bear clearly for the first time. She was large, two younger cubs by her side as they ate away at an abandoned carcass. Despite being at a safe distance, he felt a sinking feeling in his chest as he heard the grunts and growls of the trio. It was not fear, but something more devestating. For the rest of the day he felt drained. He couldn't place why, and went to sleep the moment the sun began to set with the hopes that he would feel recharged in the morning.

But tonight, it seemed that his brain could not rest. His dreams were filled with familiar forests, absent of the comforting moonlight they once held, yet filled with the desperate voice of his mother as she called for him. He could feel the warmth of Ignace next to him, yet his brother was not there. Through the leaves and thorns, he swore he could see the horrible snout of a bear.

Waking up with a sharp breath, Ludovic slipped out of Raindrop's den and into the cold night. He'd had nightmares before, but not since Moonglow, and never like this. He found himself struggling to catch his breath for a moment, sitting himself down and looking up to the sky. It was clear, the moon shining down on him.

RE: mother - Raindrop - September 19, 2025

Everyone had been sleeping soundly… except for one. After becoming a mother, some of Raindrop's senses had heightened, especially her hearing. She heard the gasp that came from Ludo, and then the frantic footsteps as he raced out of the den. She got up from her resting place, trying not to wake the others, and followed after him.

She found him sitting not far from the den, looking up to the sky. Not wanting to alarm him any more than he already was, she spoke gently, coming up beside him and nuzzling his bright white face, then sat beside him.

"Can't sleep?" She asked him, trying to stay casually. He was a growing boy, and she didn't want to baby him too much. For his sake.

Raindrop emerged from the den, her presence alone a great comfort.

He shook his head at her question, gaze moving to his paws. I had a nightmare, that's all. He responded. But had it been a nightmare if everything felt so real? I know what happened to my mom now. He felt no need to hide these things from Raindrop.

She's dead, she's not coming back.

It hurt to realise just how relieved he was to say it out loud. Like he was finally recieving permission to move on.

He had a nightmare. Nightmares were something that Raindrop rarely had, but she knew how scary they could be. Dreams had a way of twisting thoughts, the perception of what was real, and what was not. It was his next statement that almost horrified her.

"She's dead, she's not coming back."

Tears filled her eyes, and she reached to pull him closer, to hold him. She would tuck him up against her chest, stroking the back of his neck with her paw. She couldn't come up with the right words, she didn't know how to respond. She hope that her love for him would tell him what words could not.

Raindrop said nothing, and for a moment he was worried before she pulled him into a hug. He hadn't know just how much he needed it until now.

Hiding his face in her fur, muffled sobs sounded out into the silent night. Not even the crickets chirped, as though they were mourning too.

I'm sorry Raindrop.. he cried, unable to look her in the eye. You've been really good to me, I'm sorry.

The world had taken Pala away, and gifted him Raindrop. He was beginning to understand now, that Raindrop was not a replacement for the mother he lost. She could be a mother to him without needing to give up Pala entirely.

It would all be a part of him, the before and the now.
