Free bird. - Towhee - September 19, 2025

This takes place nearer to Lake Rodney but I wanted to put it here for visibility. Anyone is welcome to insert themselves! @Amalia @Alivia @Trailhawk @Cinar @Hotah :)

Crouched at the western foot of the caldera, Towhee, @Killdeer and [insert your character here] watched as a herd of deer emerged from Haunted Wood and headed toward the shore of Lake Rodney. They moved slowly, warily, as they traversed the open ground. The Elder counted them: a buck at the fore, a pair of does and four half-grown fawns. Her eyes sharpened on the smallest member of the herd, though she remained motionless as they neared the water.

The waiting wolves conferred among themselves in rapidfire Ptero, the signals basic enough that anyone should understand regardless of their fluency. Ambushing was out of the question; there was not enough cover to conceal them. They would bumrush the herd instead, hoping to single out the runt as it inevitably fell behind. Towhee made a point to remind everyone of the danger the stag posed.

The moment to strike arrived and Towhee surged forward, the tip of the spear as she galloped toward the septet of deer.

RE: Free bird. - Hotah - September 19, 2025

Hotah slipped into place at the edge of their loose formation, paws silent over the hard ground. His eyes tracked the herd as it moved— the buck, the does, the four half-grown fawns— instinct already sizing them up.
Beside him, Towhee and Killdeer spoke in sharp, flicking motions of their paws and ears. Ptero, he realized. He didn’t know the language, not yet, but he caught enough in the way their gazes cut to the smallest fawn, in the tautness of their shoulders.
Ambush was off the table— he could see that for himself. This would be a full-out rush.
When Towhee launched forward, Hotah followed, muscles surging as his dark frame tore across the grass in her wake, ready to cut the fawn from the herd.

RE: Free bird. - Trailhawk - September 19, 2025

A little delayed, but dedicated as ever.

Trailhawk saw members on the move, obviously towards the gathered herd. The stag indeed would pose the biggest threat. Yet the idea of it excited her as much as it nerved her, blame it on the youthfulness that still clung to her.

She would fall into line eagerly and yet kept herself prepared to split off should that stag become wily. It would be better if she took it on instead of the Elder Redhawk or any parents, no?

Of course, she just hoped they wouldn’t have to.

RE: Free bird. - Cinar - September 19, 2025

Just a cameo

There was a hunt happening amidst the wolves of the Caldera, but Cinar only watched from a distance. There was much to do elsewhere, and he wasn't much of a hunter. He slipped away before more than a glance of him could be stolen.

He was turning into quite the recluse these days, for better or worse.

RE: Free bird. - Amalia - September 22, 2025

Amalia took the pups @Lyric Redhawk and @Carolina Redhawk.

She herded them and settled nesr the wolves. Speaking quietly. We aren't joining today. We will watch. And im telling both of you right now. This is dangerous either one of you try and follow. I will scruff you. You will hunt big game someday. Today we watch.

She rubbed their heads and then settled to watch.

RE: Free bird. - Lyric Redhawk - September 22, 2025

Lyric was quite happy to watch, his eyes alight with pure wonder. It was rare for him to be so quiet.

He hadn't seen deer so close before, in fact he hadn't seen anything but rabbits up close. The buck alone was far more intimidating than five of the fuzzy rodents combined.

Sitting between his mothers front legs, green eyes flipped between each member of the hunt.

RE: Free bird. - Alivia - September 26, 2025

Alivia wasn't practiced enough with Ptero- or as a hunter in general- to be a major part of the planning process, but she was able to grasp the gist of the plan. She turned her eyes to the newest joiner in the group, Hotah, wondering if he was comprehending the silent discussion.

There was no time to check in with him. Towhee must have seen an opening, because she sprang the group into action quickly and decisively. Alivia maneuvered for a place just behind Towhee, occupying her blind spot protectively. She knew Towhee could take care of herself, but she also knew the Elder would be safer if she had someone close by to act as her ears.

RE: Free bird. - Towhee - September 29, 2025

Let’s keep the rounds open, so no worries about post order! I’ll begin the next one in a week or so.

She could feel Killdeer beside her, the others fanning out behind them. Towhee turned her head sideways to check their positions, orange eyes quickly bouncing from Hotah to Trailhawk to Alivia. With a flick of her snout, she ordered the she-wolves to veer to the left. She then swung her head and barked for Hotah and her grandson to follow her to the right. Thus they could slowly close in from either flank.

The herd fled before them, the stag leading the charge at first. But as the wolves surged ahead to close the gap and some of the fawns began to straggle, he slowed and fell back to offer what protection he could. He managed to corral three of the four younglings together and urge them forward, though by the time his rack swung toward the last, the wolves were already there.

Towhee resisted the urge to fall upon the smallest, slowest fawn, delegating that work to the four younger wolves. She quickly moved into the space between them and the buck, her lips wrinkling back from her yellowed fangs. She hoped it would be enough to discourage any attempts to intervene and rescue the young deer.

The stag stamped a foot and swung his antlers threateningly, but when he didn’t move toward her, Towhee risked a sideways glance at her fellow hunters.

RE: Free bird. - Carolina Redhawk - September 30, 2025

It was a tall order to ask Carolina to sit anything out, much more something with chasing involved. But she was a dutiful child, even if she could be quite "excitable", and she knew she would follow her mother's orders... While she was actively being watched, at least.

Still. She was silent as she watched the proceedings, unable to sit for the intensity of her desire. She wanted to hunt, too.

RE: Free bird. - Alivia - October 04, 2025

Alivia was directed to separate from Towhee almost as soon as she maneuvered to her side, but that only bothered her for a moment. The males that Towhee had selected for her entourage would surely be protection enough for the Elder.

She met Trailhawk's eyes excitedly, eager for the chance to work beside her friend. The pair swung to the left as they pursued the stampeding herd. Some fawns quickly fell behind alongside a protective stag. Towhee's group deftly separated the stag, leaving the fawns vulnerable. Alivia surged forward and snapped at the legs of the slowest.

RE: Free bird. - Lyric Redhawk - October 13, 2025

Eager eyes watched the older wolves run. From the safety of his mother's side, he could already picture the day when he too would get to hunt deer with his family. The passing thought sent his gaze to Carolina, and he couldn't help smiling. He hoped that she was thinking the same thing.

Shaking his head, the pup told himself to focus. His packmates, though not directly, were going to teach him an important lesson today. If he ever wanted to join one of these hunts, he needed to focus.

Besides, it would make for a great story later.

RE: Free bird. - Towhee - October 16, 2025

Thank you for jumping in here, everybody! I’m going to wrap it for us (please notify me if you need me to change any of my assumptions), and of course feel free to toss in a last post. I’ll archive it in the next week or thereabouts. :)

Alivia was the first to spill blood, springing at the fawn’s legs. Before the others could join her, Towhee’s gaze swung away again to eye the stag. He tossed his head a few more times, stamped his hooves for good measure, but ultimately accepted defeat. He backed away a few steps, then turned and cantered away, allowing the Elder to finally turn her attention upon the hunt.

The ill-fated deer had fallen beneath her comrades. Towhee’s tail swung up in a banner of triump as she hastened to join them. She sank her fangs into an opening by the ungulate’s rump, tearing off a bite and swallowing it, caring little for the cruelty of it. By her second bite, the fawn was dead and still beneath her teeth.

After everyone had fed—namely, Amalia and the pups, who Towhee beckoned over soon after the fawn gasped its last, bloody breath—there was much carrion left over. Hotah quickly stepped up and offered to butcher the carcass and parcel it out to the caldera’s caches. Towhee gave him an approving look and bobbed her snout. She watched him work for a moment, a smile touching her mouth when she noticed him set aside a hoof for the pups.

Feeling rather proud of her pack mates—not to mention stuffed with pounds of fresh meat—Towhee sauntered away to nap beneath one of the many trees scattered along the mount’s western flank.
