May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Panacea - September 20, 2025 He dropped the bird unceremoniously when the scent of a marked border reached him through the copper tang of blood. It thudded softly at his paws. Panacea went still, fever-bright eyes surveying the pass ahead. Someone lived there. Maybe someone he could bargain with. His shoulder was a mess; lacerated two weeks ago during a hunt, now infected and aching with every step. It was a miracle he'd caught the bird at all. The scent of old blood and infection wreathed him, but he managed to stay steady on his paws. After a moment he found the presence of mind to howl. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Kemal - September 20, 2025 Kemal was on edge, even with Soto defeated. Leadership was new, confusing, and frustrating. He had never expected the crown to be tossed to him in the first place, but it had been too hard to resist. His plans were building up quickly, but with so little time for them. When a howl came, he did not answer immediately. It had only been the previous night when he left the caldera his gift, so his approach was one of caution.. and yet, it was not a caldera wolf who waited for him. Small, thin, sickly.. he wasn't sure what to think of this one. Pushing out a 'whuff' to announce his arrival, he eyed them with an unspoken judgement. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Panacea - September 29, 2025 His shoulders tensed when he laid eyes on the towering wolf who moved to greet him. Panacea flattened his ears, limbs bending just slightly to lower himself. He nosed the bird closer. The dark-hooded wolf didn't exactly look impressed, but no one was ever impressed by Panacea anyway. Uh, hi,he began uncertainly, tail pressed alongside one hock. I'm... looking for a place to heal up over the winter. I can still hunt, just -Not for long. Not alone like this. Panacea swallowed the words, bright eyes sweeping over the man; assessing, weighing his chances of success. So far it was looking slim. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Kemal - September 29, 2025 They didn't smell of anything contagious, but he could tell just by looking that their shoulder was infected. What worried Kemal was that Verapaz had no healers.. but the truth was that he couldn't afford to turn them away. You can stay.He responds, pushing the bird back towards Panacea. You eat it, Verapaz is fed. To heal, you need to eat.A hungry wolf wouldn't have what it needed for the body to repair itself. With a final twitch of the nose, he decided it was time for proper introductions. I am Kemal, the Águila here. Tell me your name.Admittedly, it felt strange to continue using the name of the role given he barely spoke Spanish, but he thought it would be wrong to change the rankings. Most of Verapaz did speak the language, and he was certain that they would not undertand if he started to use Turkish for everything. It wouldn't be quite fair. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Panacea - September 29, 2025 He blinked, momentarily stunned; he hadn't expected it to be that easy. One paw lifted reflexively to rest atop the bird, but Panacea stared at the man for several more seconds before it really settled in. Kemal; Águila; Verapaz. Easy enough. Panacea,he answered softly. His ears tilted forward, tail relaxing but not swaying yet. He lowered his muzzle to crunch the bird down, bones and all, licking the blood from his lips when he lifted his head again. Verapaz,Panacea echoed after a moment, tone tinged with a question. Tell me about it.He took a tentative step closer, into pack territory now, breath catching just a little. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Kemal - September 29, 2025 Kemal watches approvingly as Panacea swallows up the bird, moving to signal that they are welcome into the borders. We are in a transition. He admits, but does not mention the challenge. Verapaz is moving to new lands, we need more paws.Even if they happened to be injured. Staring for a moment before turning to move inland, he gestures for Panacea to follow. We will ask you to swear to the omerta. Do you know what that means? The question was rhetorical, because he continued. It means that what happens in Verapaz, stays in Verapaz. Our members swear to silence, and I treat them well. That is our loyalty to each other. Glancing back to the ginger-coated wolf, Can you handle that? RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Panacea - September 29, 2025 It was a lot to take in, but Panacea was nothing if not adaptable. He nodded as Kemal went on, letting his gaze sweep over the territory stretched before them. Not home, then. Not for long, at least. Yeah, I'm familiar,Panacea confirmed a bit brusquely; he'd spent long enough as a thief to know the rules, or at least the general scaffolding they all followed. What he hadn't expected was to need to apply that knowledge again. I can keep my mouth shut. Where are we moving to?His blue eyes flitted to Kemal as the question spilled from him. RE: May the bridges I have burned light my way back home - Kemal - September 29, 2025 He had to admit that he was glad Panacea was so compliant. North, where there are more wolves.Into the flatlands, up onto the mesa. Up onto the ridges where he will watch the caldera from afar. The trip will not be long, and we will be patient with your injury. Do you need to rest?He asks. Tonight you can swear into the pack, I suggest taking advantage of the remaining sun to prepare.Things would move quickly. Kemal had remembered being overwhelmed when he joined Verapaz. |
