I defy. - Towhee - October 03, 2025

It was so hard not to bite down on the Douglas squirrel wriggling in her mouth. Every instinct demanded her to kill and eat it. She restrained herself—if not her salivary glands—as she strode uphill to the Hobbit Hole. Her hips swayed more than usual thanks to her new center of gravity, really calling attention to her rounding flanks.

She didn’t yet relinquish her grip on the struggling rodent. Towhee woofed around it, ropes of drool swinging from her chops. @Carolina Redhawk and @Lyric Redhawk better get out here fast if they didn’t want their Gigi to gobble their prey—and their shot at graduating from Nestling to Fledgeling.

The distant screams of a small, innocent mammal jolted Caro pleasantly from her dreams (which were also of the screams of small, innocent mammals). She was on her paws, as usual, before she'd processed the stimuli, and halfway out of the den before she'd decided whether the racket was fun or danger.

They were inexorably linked for her either way.

It was almost as if Gigi wasn't even there. Caro only saw the squealing, struggling chipmunk and immediately lunged. If Gigi wasn't fast enough, Caro was liable to snatch it straight from her jaws. Or, more likely, hang from it in an impromptu game of tug, and get coated in drool in the process.

Either way, her tail would be a blur of joyful motion.

RE: I defy. - Lyric Redhawk - October 04, 2025

Lyric was his sister's shadow, following right behind her until he stopped outside of the den. He wasn't as keen on taking prey straight from his great grandmother's maw.

GG! It's still alive! Other prey had been brought to them alive, but this one was really going. Why hadn't the legs been broken for them like usual?

His tail twitched behind him despite the caution. Maybe his sister might be more forward with it but Lyric had instincts too, and his told him to wait for Carolina's chase to begin. That would ultimately be his 'okay' to give chase.

RE: I defy. - Towhee - October 06, 2025

She knew her great grandchildren well enough to anticipate what came next. When Carolina blazed out of the Hobbit Hole and lunged, she swung her head out of the way with a thunderous growl. It was just a token reminder to mind her place before Towhee loosened her jaw and let the soaking wet squirrel drop to the ground.

It took a good deal of discipline but she forced herself to take a backward step. Towhee would find herself something to eat soon enough. For now, she went still to watch the scene unfold, the squirrel’s fate now wholly belonging to Carolina and Lyric.

why did I write chipmunk in my last post
In theory, Caro was a sweet and obedient child, devoted entirely to her pack and respectful of her elders. Respectfully of Gigi in particular, because she was an elder-elder.

The force of the growl shook the spiderwebs of red from her peripheral vision, and her focus expanded to take in the whole situation instead of just her overactive prey drive. She made a quick, quiet show of cowering, thin tail wriggling frantically in apology.

But as soon as the squirrel dropped, all bets were off. She rocketed off after it as it sprang away, vaguely aware of Lyric and his inclusion in the hunt. It was fast, and it was quicker at turning than she was.

"Get it!" she gasped when the squirrel made a sharp veer to the left. She thought her brother was a few steps behind her, and better able to change trajectory than her. In fact, her paws skittered and then slide beneath her as she tried, and she executed a quick and painful tumble before she was back on her paws again, already digging back into her pursuit — a good few yards behind their prey, now.

RE: I defy. - Lyric Redhawk - October 21, 2025

Lyric followed suit after his sister, like the world's best sidekick. With his darker coat he truly could have been her shadow.

At her command his paws skidded before he managed to turn left, charging at the squirrel with snapping jaws that aimed to send it back towards Carolina.

Maybe it showed in his hesitation to try and outright grab the rodent, because he was undoubtedly scared.

RE: I defy. - Towhee - October 27, 2025

Teamwork, Towhee thought as she watched, makes the dream work. It gave her great pleasure to watch the siblings cooperate with one another, rather than fight over the kill. It continued building her anticipation for their first pack hunt, which would fall within the next few months.

They were ready for their promotions, she concluded before they’d even captured and killed the squirrel. Hell, they already were Fledgelings in practice. They had spread their proverbial wings and begun to fly. It made her chest ache in the best way, badly enough that Towhee reached up a paw to rub at it. It was probably a little heartburn, thanks to her own unborn offspring, but mostly it was unbearable fondness and pride for Killdeer’s kids.

RE: I defy. - Carolina Redhawk - October 31, 2025

It was just as she regained her footing that Lyric managed to steer the squirrel back to her. Her heart thudded impossibly hard in her chest, and the next few seconds passed in a nauseating whirlwind that ended, predictably, with the squirrel clawing at her face while her jaws remained clamped around its tail.

High-pitched snarls vibrated in her throat. She gave the squirrel a hard shake and, severing its tail, launched it still-living several feet in the air. She blinked around them, not quite sure where it'd gotten to.

RE: I defy. - Lyric Redhawk - November 03, 2025

Lyric hadn't expected the squirrel's tail to come off, or for it to be sent flying. He watched in frozen horror before sprinting after it.

The squirrel landed, obviously dazed, and Lyric took the opportunity to grab it and shake. Between him and Carolina, the thing was half dead. They had quite literally shook the life out of it.

Looking to Towhee, he waited for some sign of approval. Had they done well?

RE: I defy. - Towhee - November 03, 2025

The squirrel was in pieces, but was it dead? She hoped so, for its sake. Towhee grimaced a little, though her expression quickly shifted to a grin when Lyric shot an expectant look her way.

Well done, you’ve officially fledged! Towhee exclaimed, rocking back onto her haunches so she could clap her forepaws together. This time, you can do whatever you want with it. It’s your party, you can play with your food if you like.

The Elder sent up a few congratulatory yips for good measure, declaring the Fledgelings’ formal ascension to all the ears in the pack. She moved closer to them, tail up and wagging, looking pleased as she nosed at Caro and Ricky. They had done their Gigi proud.

We can wrap this here if it makes sense? :)

RE: I defy. - Carolina Redhawk - November 06, 2025

Though she was denied the kill she'd hoped to make, Caro was still relieved to see that someone secured the tiny meal. It freed up her focus a little — enough that she startled when Gigi spoke rather than ignoring her entirely.

Caro's tail wagged uncertainly, and she looked back at Lyric with a tiny spark of hope in her eyes. But, although they'd been given permission, she knew what the right thing to do was.

"You can eat it, Lyric," she said to her brother, magnanimous now that nothing small and furry was fleeing from her. "I can keep the tail."

Fine with me!
