Her breaths came ragged and too-quick, misting the air in front of her face. That visual cue was the only way she knew it was cold. The coywolf stumbled to a halt, realizing only belatedly that she was practically vibrating where she stood. It was fear, maybe, or the frost-tipped limbs of trees dribbling icy wetness into her pale furs. Or both. Probably both.
Serein let her hind end collapse into the dirt with a shuddering sigh. Her face tilted upward, searching for the sky between the trees. She didn't even know where she was. The scent of fresh blood was thick in her nostrils, drowning out any hint she might have drawn from the air. She dropped fully to the ground then, muzzle dipping to lick her wounds carefully. Her breaths still hadn't slowed. The forest was empty, at least. She was alone for now. Safe. At least, that was what she tried to tell herself.
