Caution ahead. - Towhee - October 06, 2025

The leaking hadn’t lasted (thank fuck…) but it had made her remember her bout of milk fever and @Aquene’s wise words of yore. She told @Hotah to bring her fresh fish and mushrooms, though Towhee wasn’t so pregnant that she couldn’t fend for herself some. She planned to forage a bit today, eventually making her way to the lake to see if she could catch a carp or something.

Light rain misted over her scarred back as she shuffled around the caldera’s interior, nosing through the leaf litter in search of fungi. She found some familiar mushrooms growing in some damp soil beneath a small log she overturned. Towhee made quick work of them.

When she came across another cluster, this time attached to the bark of a dead (or maybe dying) hardwood tree, she paused. She didn’t recognize these ones. She sniffed at them, though they just smelled earthy. Their bright orange color warned of danger though. Towhee licked her lips, wondering who among the Redhawks might be able to identify them.

Raising her head and blinking cold drizzle from her eyes, the Elder summoned @Alivia.

RE: Caution ahead. - Hotah - October 11, 2025

Quick cameo.
Hotah arrived through the mist with a fish swinging from his jaws, the rain beading across his shoulders and dripping from his muzzle. The air smelled of wet earth and pine, and of Towhee’s scent threaded faintly through it — the scent of home.
He carried more than just the trout; slung carefully across his back were a few pale mushrooms he’d unearthed from a birch hollow on the way. He wasn’t entirely sure if they were the kind she’d meant, but he figured she’d know better than him.
Your royal feast, he announced with a crooked grin, voice rough with humor as he laid the fish before her. Nearly wrestled a heron for it, so I expect full gratitude.
He nudged the mushrooms next, brow quirking. Can’t promise these won’t make you see stars, though. You’ll have to test that for me.
For a moment, he lingered—watching her, the curve of her belly, the steadiness still in her movements despite it. There was fondness there, hidden beneath the teasing smirk. Then he straightened, tail flicking once.
I’ll bring more by nightfall, he said simply, stepping back into the rain. Don’t eat the glowing ones without me.
And with that, the dark wolf slipped away into the drizzle, his silhouette swallowed by the quiet gray of the caldera.

RE: Caution ahead. - Alivia - October 12, 2025

A few rainy days in a row had Alivia wishing for the sun. On the bright side though, her moss collection was replete. Alivia waded into the shallows of the cold creek that ran behind her clinic and deposited a mouthful of the squishy green lumps. Towhee's summons came then, and it was a welcome interruption.

Towhee was not alone when Alivia found her. Alivia hung back for a moment while she and Hotah appeared to exchange a few quiet words that Alivia wasn't near enough to hear. The moment seemed intimate somehow, and she wasn't sure she was supposed to interrupt. She approached when Hotah departed.

"Hey, Towhee," she spoke and signed. She eyed Hotah's odd assortment of offerings upon the wet detritus of the forest floor, and the puzzle pieces clicked into place in her mind. "Oh, you're expecting..? Uh, congrats!" As an aspiring physician, she probably should have seen the signs earlier.

RE: Caution ahead. - Towhee - October 13, 2025

Hotah materialized from the rain, his drab fur quite suited to the weather. Towhee blinked at him as he unloaded a fish and mushrooms at her feet, then stepped back and simply gazed at her. Their eyes met for an instant before she dropped her own to examine his goods. He really was quite the provider.

Unaware that she’d missed his quips about the mushrooms, she glanced up in time to watch him stride away into the gray drizzle. She blinked, then dropped her attention back to the fare he’d left her. Towhee was pretty sure she recognized these mushrooms, though she was still curious about…

Livi, she said, trying to hide her startled reaction when the young she-wolf appeared before her. Hey, she returned warmly, the young woman’s words earning a loud blink of orange eyes. Oh, yeah, I guess I could’ve made an announcement but that would’ve been weird, she said with a huff of laughter through her nose. Thanks.

She smiled at Alivia for a beat, then leaned over Hotah’s gifts to nudge her where her face met her neck. When Towhee withdrew, she shook some rain from her eyes and then pointed her snout at the fungus growing on the nearby wood.

I called you here because I figured you were my best shot at IDing these, she said, looking between Livi’s pale face and the Laetiporus sulphureus. No worries if you don’t know. I won’t take any unecessary risks. It’s just that, Towhee began, then realized this was a bit of shared history, I don’t know if you remember Aquene at all. But she taught me about how important the nutrients in fish and mushrooms are for milk supply.

Alivia might know something about that too. Towhee wondered but did not ask, giving the aspiring healer a chance to speak. If she did possess any knowledge about midwifery, Towhee would welcome her guidance. Sure, she’d done this before—many times, really—but she was at a point in her life where she welcomed support in any and all capacities.

RE: Caution ahead. - Alivia - October 17, 2025

Alivia tilted her head skeptically, silently challenging Towhee's assertion that an announcement would have been weird. If this kind of news wasn't worth an announcement, then what was? Her expression softened in response to Towhee's gentle nudge.

When Towhee revealed that Alivia was being called upon because she was thought to have expertise, Alivia straightened up a little. She was still adjusting to the fact that she might be the highest trained medical mind available to Redhawk Caldera-- a thought that was equally elating and terrifying.

"Oh yeah, I do know this one," Alivia remarked of the orange-tinted fungus. As a pup, she had been constantly on the move with only her handicapped mother to care for her, so the pair had been forced to find some unconventional ways to eat until Alivia grew large and skilled enough to hunt for them.

"It won't, like, kill you or anything, and it actually tastes pretty good, but it may mess up your stomach. Those are the better bet," she said, pointing to the mushrooms that Hotah had left behind. "Much more reliable."

Hmm, Aquene. No, she didn't remember her, to tell the truth. Alivia remembered next to nothing about her early days in the canyon. Aquene sounded like a talented midwife, though.

"I didn't know that about fish and mushrooms," Alivia admitted, "But I do know that red meat is really important on this side of the pregnancy." If Towhee neglected red meat in favor of other fare to boost her milk supply, she risked doing more harm than good.

RE: Caution ahead. - Towhee - October 27, 2025

Towhee watched Alivia’s lips closely, her way of listening carefully. The mushrooms she’d discovered weren’t worth the risk, though Hotah apparently had a better eye for edible fungi. That said, Livi informed her that red meat was very important at this later stage of her pregnancy. Towhee’s head tipped to the side.

Don’t worry, I can eat all of the above. I feel like a bottomless pit lately, she said. It’s taking every ounce of my willpower not to drop to the ground and shovel that into my mouth, she joshed, flicking her toes at Hotah’s offering. I’ll tell him to bring me more… wait, what counts as red meat?

She shifted her weight, reluctantly tearing her eyes off the food to look back into Livi’s face. Towhee blinked some more rainwater out of her eyes, starting to feel a little irked by the weather now. They should move this conversation elsewhere, though she didn’t know what to do about the food. How the hell had Hotah managed to transport it all so expertly?

I’m gonna snarf this, she decided aloud. Then I’d love to find somewhere less wet to continue this conversation. I won’t keep you long, Towhee promised, already getting into position over the proverbial supper late. I just wouldn’t mind picking your brain about my dietary needs a bit more before I let you get back to whatever you were doing before I waylaid you.
