little lion man - Speckletooth - October 16, 2025

The days were growing colder, and it reminded Speckletooth of the uncomfortable season when the bog froze over and his toes would go numb. He supposes it must happen here, too.

Passing through a hollow, he couldn't help remarking how quiet it was! Not even the croak of a toad or the buzz of a bug. But those mossy trees sure were pretty, they reminded him of home. The thought made him smile, sending Speckletooth with his tail wagging all the way to the river.

Leaning down to lap at the chilly water, he wondered just how the rest of his day would be spent. He had ate just a day earlier, so his stomach wouldn't complain for a day or two more.

RE: little lion man - Cosmo - October 17, 2025

Left to his own devices, Cosmo had a moment to explore the group's newfound territory, to see how far it stretched, and really become familiar with the land. But one distracting butterfly led to another distracting bird led to a long line of distractions that practically beckoned him to follow, until he realized that he'd been led much further from home than he'd intended. It didn't worry him too much, though! He'd been exercising his tracking skills after a while of not putting his nose to its limits, so he was confident in his ability to sniff out Katmai's scent markers and get back home.

Wherever he was, it was much quieter than he was used to. His footsteps seemed to echo through the hollow, and the air was chiller here – but with his thick coat, that was more of a comfort than a deterrent. Eventually, he found a river, and he decided to follow it, maybe just for a little while. He'd learned that you could find all kinds of interesting prey around – or in – the water, and if he got lucky, maybe he'd be able to bring something back –

“Ah!” Cosmo yelped, almost walking headfirst into a wall of speckled fur. He jumped back, stumbling on the forest floor, fur puffing out in surprise (which looked no different from normal, really), before he relaxed and stood back up, laughing at himself.

“Sorry, friend! Didn't see ya there!” Right, wolves liked space. Cosmo took a few steps back, shaking some stray leaves and twigs out of his fur. “Thought I was alone out here! Do you live here? It's nice.”

RE: little lion man - Speckletooth - October 17, 2025

His much needed drink was interrupted when a stranger bowled into him. Speckletooth stumbled and nearly choked, but he was surprised when he didn't fall. Turning his head it took a moment for his vision to settle, but a canine half his size wasn't quite what he expected.

Speckletooth might have been worried about an attack if the strangers demeanour didn't scream of a kindred spirit. He joined them in their laughter instead, his tail waving behind him. It's alright, I didn' see you either.

I don't live here no, but it's nice eh? He smiled, looking back at the mossy trees. I'm from the swamps, way out from 'ere. Which way exactly, he wasn't so sure. The trees remind me of home.

RE: little lion man - Cosmo - October 20, 2025

Cosmo looked closer at the wolf with a level of recognition he didn't quite understand for a moment, considering the two had never met before – until he realized that he had crossed eyes, reminding him of one of his brothers. Huh. It was good to know that both dogs and wolves had the potential to be cross-eyed. Cosmo added the trait to his mental tally of things wolves and dogs had in common.

“I've never heard of a swamp before!” Cosmo exclaimed, surprised to hear a place he didn't know about, despite considering himself well-traveled. “I don't live here, but I live close to here – “ After a quick look around, he wondered if he'd traveled even further than he'd thought. “ – well, somewhat close, I think?”

Since it didn't seem like the wolf was going to eat him or anything, Cosmo stepped the slightest bit closer to sniff without getting too far into what he'd learned was called ‘personal space’, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar scents on him. “What's your name? I'm Cosmo! What's a swamp like?”

RE: little lion man - Speckletooth - October 21, 2025

They had never heard of a swamp! What was wrong with the characters around here, where were they putting the goats?

While it was noble of Cosmo to attempt respecting personal space, Speckletooth still had little understanding of such a concept. He was all too happy to get right up close and personal to snuffle through fur and learn what he could. They smelled weird! My name's Speckletooth, but not 'cause my teeth are speckled. Just ma' fur. He responded after a moment, shuffling back to speaking distance. The swamps are real nice! All muddy and real wet, smells pretty bad too, but I miss 'em. He let out what must have been a longing sigh.

Wolves 'round here are real strange though, none of you's seem te' know what a swamp is. You look real strange too! Though with fur all big and white, a swamp might not be so comfortable. Maybe that was why Cosmo had never seen one.

RE: little lion man - Cosmo - October 24, 2025

“Even if it smelled bad, it must be pretty cool if you miss it!” Cosmo said, trying his best to imagine it. It could get muddy and wet where he was from, but it wasn't like that all the time, like he imagined a swamp probably was.

“Oh, I look strange because I'm not a wolf, I'm a dog!” As if to show all of the differences, Cosmo spun in a circle, before getting distracted by simply chasing his tail as he continued. “I'll be a real wolf someday, though! That's what Kindle says, at least. He also says I maybe shouldn't tell everyone I'm a dog. I thought everyone could tell, though!” And yet, his tail continued to evade him, curled against his backside and just out of reach.
