It was dawn when she woke to a restless surging through her veins. Serein roused with a start and a small gasp, sitting up from where she'd curled herself along the outskirts of the mesa. Through the hormone-addled haze, she remembered what @Kemal had promised her: safety.

So she sought him out beneath the misty light of dawn.

Kemal had remained in the mesa overnight, having called for Verapaz to join him a day earlier. With the pack being so close to completing the move, it made more sense than taking Serein back to the pass only to move her back so soon after.

He was still blinking sleep out of his eyes when it hit him. First her scent, then the sound of footsteps. He raised his head, wary, but curious nonetheless.

..Serein.

He knew what had brought her all this way, he wasn't new to this, but it felt so wrong. Yet, he had made a promise to Verapaz.

She hesitated, her dark eyes lingering on him for several long moments. Kemal, she returned softly when the silence had stretched thin between them. A hesitant step forward brought her closer.

Truth be told, she wasn't entirely sure what came next. Instinct urged her nearer, urged her to touch him — but her nerves held her back. Her head canted slightly, tail stilling in the air behind her like a question unspoken. The song of the wilds thrummed in her veins, but even a wild creature knew better than to lurk where she was unwanted.

Are you here because you want children? He raised a brow, getting straight to the point. I won't make you.

Kemal rose to his feet, but didn't move closer. His morals outweighed temptation, but it couldn't be denied that he was tempted. It had been too long, his everything itched for it.

A hot breath left him, lowering his gaze. If you bear them, I'll marry you.

Children. Serein blinked, and understanding dawned on her all at once. He was offering her children — but more than that, to marry her. A thousand questions lingered on the tip of her tongue; what kind of man was he, to offer this to a woman he barely knew?

It frightened her, in a way. Countless scenarios flashed through her thoughts: suppose he beat her, suppose he married three other women by season's end, suppose he left her when the next came along...

But what if no other man ever offered to marry her? What if she could be happy with him? The questions were endless and dizzying, but in the end it was hope which stood at the forefront. Hope for a future that might bring more peace than what she'd left behind.

Yes, Serein decided, taking in a slow breath. Her dark eyes swept over Kemal with a new focus now, as if seeing him for the first time. I want children. Children, and all that would follow.

She had agreed, and Kemal knew now that it was set. They would marry after the birth, if it ever came.

He would offer the safety promised to her, keeping her and staying next to her until the end of her heat. Up in a cave on the mesa, close to the ridge where he could watch the western movement.

Kemal let his breath go steady, and invited Serein away from prying eyes.

fade here?
