so I say - Haedwig - October 29, 2025 It was over. Her heat had passed, and she was successfully not-pregnant for another year. Her method never failed! She had slipped out of the bear den early that morning, disposing of thoroughly used up herbs and bones leftover from meals. Haedwig had made sure to give herself a good wash, too. The sun was high with the midday now and she stared up at the highest peaks of the spear. Sooner or later she would need to climb up and meet the other residents. Maybe today would be the day, if she could shake off her nerves. The old witch pushed out a heavy breath, settling into her usual hunched posture. This was going to suck. RE: so I say - Katmai - October 29, 2025 Katmai had come near a few times, but the scent of the woman's heat had warned him off each time. Today when he checked in on her, however, it seemed to have faded. Worrying that she'd left the area entirely, Katmai surged past the heavy borders and into the remnants of her musk. He and Kindle had made sure to mark this area with extra frequency, not wanting any passing wolves to mistake their unwelcomeness. To his relief, he detected no trace of trespasssers as he search the woman out. "Haedwig?" he called, relieved when he caught a whiff of a fresher scent on the breeze. It seemed she'd not left them after all. RE: so I say - Haedwig - October 29, 2025 A voice - somewhat familiar - hit her, Haedwig turning her head to spot them. Ah. How could she have been so dense? Kat was short for Katmai. She should have realized sooner. Maybe her mind had just been too distracted. Kat.She responded, bringing herself around a corner to meet him. Haedwig had to think she must have met him back in that forest for a reason, more than the thyme he helped her collect. I suppose I've been rude, not coming to greet my new leader. She snickered. It was still jarring, the idea of following a wolf so young. At least Katmai seemed to have a good head on his shoulders, from the time they had spent together. RE: so I say - Katmai - October 30, 2025 Katmai found it, likely, almost equally jarring to suddenly have Alaric and Haedwig as "subordinates". He still felt an all-encompasing need to be respectful to his elder, and he couldn't see that deference fading any time soon. "It seems you were otherwise occupied," he said, diplomatically, not sure whether he ought to directly acknowledge her season since she'd gone to such great pains to avoid them for the duration. "Are you well?" he asked her, just a little concerned by the long period she'd spent shut away. "There is a kill not too far into the foothills. I can take you there, if you'd like." RE: so I say - Haedwig - October 31, 2025 The topic of her season was passed by, something Haedwig was perfectly pleased with. I wouldn't mind eating something without a layer of dust. She agreed. Where are the rest of you all staying? She asked. I thought I should move closer, but I'll need help if it's much of a climb. But worth it, probably. For community and all that - Haedwig had seen how crazy old ladies could get left on their own. She wasn't ready to turn into that. Maybe it hadn't been the best idea to move onto a mountain, but all signs pointed directly to Dawnspear, and it just made sense. A group of young wolves coming together to form a pack needed the guidance of an elder, even if it was only someone quietly brooding in the background. RE: so I say - Katmai - October 31, 2025 At her assent, Katmai turned and began to lead the way. It was a ways off, far enough that it wouldn't attract scavengers to where Haedwig had laired, but still not too far to travel even on an empty stomach and rickety limbs. "There's an old rendezvous site further up," he told her, his tail swinging at his hocks. "Nice and flat, and fairly large. There's a healing lodge somewhere nearby, too — I haven't seen it, but Kini or Pie or Alaric could show you the way." He trotted a few paces ahead to pull aside a bit of brush for the older woman, so that it would not be caught on her (messy!) pelt as she passed. "I'll show you the way," he promised as he caught up again. "Do you need to take anything with you?" It might be several trips, if so. Katmai didn't mind the errands, though. Presently, they came to the kill, which was half eaten but still fairly fresh. RE: so I say - Haedwig - November 03, 2025 Haedwig's stare was mostly blank and focused ahead, but her turned ear was enough to show she was listening to Katmai. Treepie? She clicked her tongue, I like that one.A passing remark, but a postive sign nonetheless. The girl had made a good impression on her just before Haedwig locked herself away. No, we can go straight there.Once she ate, of course. Haedwig leaned down, more or less blocking Katmai's view of her face while she ate. She wouldn't say it, but Haedwig was glad to be on Dawnspear. Being surrounded by youth was refreshing and familiar, despite how strange it felt for a yearling to be leading them. How many others have joined you? RE: so I say - Katmai - November 05, 2025 Katmai smiled to himself. "So do I," he replied, his heart warm as he thought of the older girl. Her desire to become a mother had made her into something of a symbol in his mind. Aside from being someone he hoped to become good friends with, his desire to see children running through the village was currently riding on her shoulders. He settled in to wait, cleaning his paws while he attended Haedwig's meal. She asked him a question, then, and he supposed she did not want him simply waiting around for her to be done. He took his time with a rambling answer. "There are nine of us, or so," he began, counting them off in his head. "Treepie was already here, with her sister Tikaani and their Alaric. He was a medicine man here when this village was still called Moonspear. You came with Kindle and Cosmo, of course. And I brought Kinusi — though she lived in the village of Moonspear when she was a girl, too. Other than that, it's just a girl named Kira who has come to us from afar." He looked back up at her. "For most of us, this is only our second season of leaffall," he said, contemplating the heavy skew toward youth in the pack. "Only you and Alaric have seen many years." He did not realize that Cosmo was older than he appeared. RE: so I say - Haedwig - November 06, 2025 The idea of another healer gave Haedwig reason to worry. She just hoped it wouldn't turn into a 'too many cooks in the kitchen' sort of situation. But, there was something to look forward to here. Their numbers were good, and with young members they would only grow in the coming years. Haedwig finished off her fill, licking her lips alright. Alright, let's start heading up. should we fade out?
