the glitches - Treepie - October 30, 2025

She would begin her day very early tomorrow morning, so Treepie planned to fetch supper and then head to bed. Hoping to conserve her energy for the trip to the caldera, the yearling crept toward the nearest stockpile and sifted through its contents. She unearthed a dead pika and some leftover leg of lamb.

Shadows deepened around her as she deliberated, her tail switching to and fro. Finally, she nosed the rodent—stiffer than a petrified tree branch—out of the cache, then plucked it up in her teeth. She swiveled, yellow eyes cutting to her left before she trotted that way, headed toward a scenic overlook where she could enjoy sunset as she ate.

Katmai had told Kira about Treepie, encouraging Kira to meet more of the pack members. When Kira noticed her at the cache, she started toward it to introduce herself.

But, Treepie had started off toward a scenic overlook. Kira trotted after her. Once she saw the overlook, she took a minute to take in the view before turning to Treepie. Her tail flicked with excitement before she spoke.

"Hello, I'm Kira. You're Treepie, right?" she introduced herself and asked about the other.

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 30, 2025

She slung herself down near the edge, legs outstretched and toes dangling as she settled the carcass against her chest. It would be tough, though Pie didn’t mind. She bent down and began gnawing at the nearest limb, quickly severing it with a gruesome noise that didn’t quite drown out the “hello” that sounded nearby.

Tiuttuk flicked her head up sharply, her body stiffening as she peered up at the stranger. She dropped the dead pika and stood, ascertaining the unfamiliar she-wolf with both eyes and nose. She offered a name readily enough, even seemed to know Treepie’s. Any wariness wore off quickly.

Greetings, Kira. You can call me Pie, she confirmed with a smile. I’m starting to get FOMO with all these K-names, she quipped with a huff of laughter. Have you been here long?

She supposed none of them had lived here long—pardoning herself, Alaric and Tikaani, of course—but Katmai and his ilk had been haunting the mountainside for weeks now. It was possibly Kira had been among them all this time and they simply hadn’t crossed paths. Or perhaps she was a more recent recruit. Pie’s head tilted in anticipation of the story.

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 30, 2025

Kira approached cautiously and slowly. "It's nice to meet you, Pie," she said as she got closer. "Kindle mentioned all the K names. It would be hard to not feel left out." A chuckle escaped her lips as she settled in a few feet from Treepie.

"Not at all," said Kira, answering about if she'd been there long. "I met Kindle recently as he was marking the border, and he invited me to join, and Katmai was understanding, I guess." Her tail flicked around as she spoke.

"It's been a while since I called anywhere 'home'," the young wolf said. "I'm lucky I ran into such a great pack."

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 30, 2025

When Kira explained that Kindle had only recently invited her here, a peculiar feeling speared through Tiuttuk. Her ears folded backward for half a heartbeat before she rearranged them. Careful to maintain a friendly expression, something churned in the pit of her belly as heat prickled between her slim shoulder blades.

It certainly had the makings of a great pack, though Pie had to wonder, What do you know of Dawnspear so far? She paused, then added in a slightly softer voice, What took you away from your last home?

Chances were, some sort of tragedy had struck Kira. That seemed to be the way of the world, although Pie reminded herself that sometimes wolves simply dispersed. For Kira’s sake, she hoped that was all there was to it. She waited to hear in expectant silence, yellow eyes subtly appraising the other woman in a new light.

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 30, 2025

Kira didn't notice Treepie's reaction to her mention of Kindle. She hadn't thought of Kindle in any way other than a friend, someone who was helpful in her finding a place to settle.

"I don't know much yet," she said. "So far, I've only met Kindle and Katmai, but Kindle showed me everyone's scents. That's all right now."

Her ears folded back for a moment as Treepie asked her about her last home.

"A flood," she said. "My family separated getting away, and, well..." she didn't want to add the last part about being the only one left. Despite no clues to the contrary, Kira didn't fully believe (and perhaps never would fully believe) that she was the only one left.

"I've been alone ever since," she said, quietly. "Sorry, I don't mean to be a drag."

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 31, 2025

Her coffee-and-cream colorations and fine-boned features were pretty, though Treepie felt like she had the upper hand in the looks department. She knew some would call it narcissism, though she preferred to think of it as confidence. She knew she was striking, particularly with her bold, contrasting pelt. Kira was a little more feminine than her, though Pie maintained her own svelte curves.

A flood had separated her family, Kira said, capturing the Ostrega’s attention with a blink of yellow eyes. Pie didn’t think she’d ever heard that particular flavor of sob story before. She frowned, pondering which was worse: definitively losing your loved ones to such a tragedy or not being certain of their fates. By the sound of it, Kira hadn’t been granted that sort of closure.

You’re not, Tiuttuk refuted reflexively when Kira apologized. You have my sympathies. I’m glad you found your way here. Dawnspear is going to be a strong, tightly-knit village, she manifested aloud. Now that you’ll have its support, what comes next? What sort of life do you plan to build for yourself here?

It was a big question, with lots of answers. They could talk about trades, for instance, though truthfully Tiuttuk was more curious about Kira’s familial aspirations. Had she come here hoping to find a mate and bear children? Did she perhaps have her eye on Kindle already, hence following him home?

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 31, 2025

Kira felt a bit lighter after sharing her story. She hadn't had much chance to talk about it since it happened, so it was good to get it off her chest. It helped hearing Treepie's confidence in what the pack would be.

"I really hope so," she said. "It seems like it will be, from what little I've seen so far."

Treepie's question made Kira pause. What kind of life did she want to build?

"I'm not sure yet. Honestly, I hadn't thought much about it just yet," said Kira. "I want to learn...something, but I haven't decided what yet. There are so many possibilities."

Kira didn't realize the silent question Treepie was curious about, and, as of now, the thought of a mate and children hadn't occurred to her.

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 31, 2025

Truth, Tiuttuk could only agree when Kira inferred all the possibilities. I’m sure you’ll find your niche. Now that you don’t have to spend all your time just trying to survive, she continued, feeling that was a safe enough assumption, you can explore your interests and talents. I’ve always had a penchant for the arts, though I dabbled in leadership for a while. Nowadays, I’m pondering the merits of becoming a guidance counselor…

She was prattling a bit. Treepie closed her mouth with a quiet click, thinking of some way to steer the conversation back toward Kira. As she mulled, she glanced down at the stiff pika lying at her feet. She idly set a paw on it and began rolling it back and forth.

I already specialize in advising, so maybe I can help myself by helping you figure out what you want to do, Pie offered.

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 31, 2025

Kira nodded in agreement about having time to now. "I'm hoping to find what I want to do, not just what I gotta do to stay alive." A chuckle escaped her lips. She listened as Treepie talked about her own interest, and she was glad to shift the conversation away from herself.

"The arts are nice. I think you'd make a good counselor," she said. From what little she's seen of Treepie, she seemed like she could excel at it.

And, she was already an advisor. A counselor couldn't be that big of a leap, but Kira wouldn't know for sure.

"I want to be helpful," Kira said. "That's all I got for now. But, I can be helpful in lots of ways."

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 31, 2025

We’ll figure it out, Pie assured, pulling her lips into a bigger smile, although we don’t have to do it right this moment. I was actually planning on eating this, she added, pointing her snout at the pika beneath her paw, and then going to bed early. I have travel plans first thing in the morning. Heading to see family. Anyway, would you like to split this? We can sit, eat and enjoy the sunset.

She didn’t wait for Kira’s reply before ducking her head and grasping the remaining hind limb in her teeth. She carefully pulled the pika in half, nosing the two smaller pieces off to the side before glancing up at the other she-wolf. Should she take Treepie up on her offer, she planned to give her the anterior half of the dismembered pika.

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 31, 2025

When Kira heard Treepie  say that she had travel plans early, she was about to apologize and leave, but then, the other wolf offered to split the food and enjoy the sunset.

"Oh, thank you," she said, moving slightly closer to take the offered bits. She turned her head to look at the sunset. "It's a beautiful sight." It was a nice offering, and she only felt that much more as if she was meant to be here. She gazed at the sunset as she chewed on the meat.

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 31, 2025

They soon lapsed into a companionable silence broken only by the sounds of tearing and chewing tough meat. Kira didn’t complain about the texture, so Treepie didn’t call attention to it. She stared out over the vista, watching the shadows lengthen until the sun slipped behind the peak at their backs and fully cloaked the wilderness in dusky tones.

After finishing her share of the food, Treepie licked her paws clean, then arched her head to groom some dried blood from her chest. She finished by running her tongue over her chops to get rid of any last crumbs or drops of blood. It hadn’t been her tastiest meal, though she was satisfied and would go to bed with a full stomach.

I won’t be gone long, just a day or so, she broke the silence to share. Sometime after I get back, we should get together again and chat. While I’m gone, why don’t you think of things that interest you, things you might like to learn? Then we could make a plan and go from there. I mean, if that sounds good to you, Kira.

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 31, 2025

Kira let the quiet sit between them as they ate. It was a comfortable silence, thankfully. Only broken by the sounds of eating, then, when they finished, Treepie spoke again.

"That would be really nice, Pie. I appreciate that you're willing to help." Her heart fluttered with excitement at the thought of figuring out her purpose in life.

"It sounds great. I will spend that time thinking on what interests me."

RE: the glitches - Treepie - October 31, 2025

You better get used to the help, Treepie quipped, pushing onto all fours. This whole pack will have your back.

Kira promised to spend some time pondering her interests. Including Kindle? the little voice in the back of Pie’s mind whispered. She felt that same strange feeling as before, which she could now recognize as some flavor of jealousy. She took a breath and reminded herself of two very important points: firstly, it wasn’t a competition and Kindle would choose who he liked, if anyone. And secondly, it might not be a competition, but Treepie was sure she had a good chance of winning.

She smirked to herself, then adjusted it into a proper smile as she said, I’ll see you later, Kira. Good night.

She walked past the other she-wolf, brushing shoulders companionably and waving her tail as she slipped past. This was going to be a friendly (not a) competition. Treepie hadn’t sussed many details out of Kira yet, but she had been more than pleasant. Whatever happened with Kindle, Tiuttuk liked to think they’d forged a friendship here on the twilit overlook.

Thank you for the thread!

RE: the glitches - Kira Lazore - October 31, 2025

Kira could already feel the tight-knitted-ness of the pack. Treepie's offer to help, even though they'd only just met was proof of that.

"Good night, thank you," Kira said, but Treepie was already headed off.

The young wolf took a few minutes to continue watching the sunset, blissfully unaware of the (non) competition. But, she was fairly confident she was making friends in her new pack, which, at the moment, was her main goal.
