[m] crackling - Serein - October 31, 2025

Mature Content Warning

The participants have indicated the following reason(s) for this warning: Blood
The pale light of sunrise and the taste of bile in her mouth was what first greeted Serein that morning. She'd been restless during the night, managing only brief fitful periods of sleep. Now the scent of sickness was on her breath, and she leapt from her sleeping place to vomit into the dirt.

She retched again, and again, biting her tongue harshly in the process. By the time she lifted her head and stepped back, blood smeared her dark mouth. Bright scarlet droplets were scattered in the dirt alongside sickly yellow bile.

Serein didn't know it yet, but the mix of bile and blood heralded her first pregnancy.

RE: [m] crackling - Disa - November 05, 2025

Disa had not chosen a den. Something about nesting in the mesa's pockets made her feel like a maggot in a slab of meat. She would sleep by the  budding garden until the uneasy feeling passed - or forever, of it didn't.

The sight of a sorry creature leaving the mess's interior to retch violently did not sway her in favour of a rocky home.

"You're sick," the little wolf commented, stopping outside the splash zone to look at the contents of Serein's stomach. She did not know much about disease, but supposed blood was a bad sign.

RE: [m] crackling - Serein - November 05, 2025

She did not recognize the wolf who approached her, but Serein supposed she had only herself to blame for that. Her entrance into the pack had been quiet, and she'd been reclusive since then, afraid to face how others might react to the recent decisions she'd made. But there was no escaping it now.

After a moment she lifted her gaze to her packmate. Yes, she answered quietly, swiping her tongue over her mouth to clear the blood away from her muzzle. Her dark eyes drifted back to the mess she'd made. I've heard that being with child causes sickness. But is it like this? Or... She looked to the woman again, wondering if perhaps she knew more.

RE: [m] crackling - Disa - November 05, 2025

The gears in Disa's head purred as the machine worked to connect dots. Serein was all smoke and sharp lines - she matched Defne's description of the wolf that may or may not have imparted her scent on Kemal.

"I don’t know," she answered with a shrug, staring at the bile. Disa had never taken much interest in the affairs of women, remaining awkwardly outside the bonds that welded her mother and sisters together.

"Did you try to make children?" she asked, blinking once. Kemal had advertised- perhaps this woman had answered. "Why?" For power, like Defne?

RE: [m] crackling - Serein - November 05, 2025

The moment she'd been dreading came to pass, and she felt her ears growing hot, then her cheeks. She dropped her gaze. Serein knew immediately what she wanted to say, but for a moment the words seemed to stick in her throat. After a small pause, she forced them out a little stiffly, a little defensively:

He said he would marry me. It sounded sullen and childish to her own ears, which fell flat to her skull the moment the words left her mouth. Serein swallowed, turning her muzzle away slightly. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Now she was realizing she didn't really know at all whether it was a good idea or not. She didn't know him at all.

RE: [m] crackling - Disa - November 05, 2025

"He said he would marry me " Serein shared, and seemed embarrassed about the fact. Disa could not understand why - that had been the publicly announced deal.

"He will marry you if they live. His wife died," Disa shared helpfully. "And a leader must have wives and children, so," The small wolf shrugged - she and Defne were aligned there; Kemal could not lead as a bachelor. It was.. unbecoming, somehow. Weird, like putting a baby in charge of a bison hunt.

If they live. She blinked. His wife died. These were things Serein had not considered, that she or her brood might perish somewhere along the way. Or that there had been another before her. The heat in her ears intensified, but no apparent judgment was forthcoming from the woman. That was a small mercy.

Serein stepped back, putting distance between herself and the scattered contents of her stomach. He had a wife? She found herself questioning in a hollow attempt at distracting herself from the heavy pit in her stomach. No, she didn't know him at all.

RE: [m] crackling - Disa - November 05, 2025

Disa's attempt at soothing was not going well. She could sense it, dimly, and her sharp little ears worked hard to catch any scraps of counseling know-how that a better wolf might have shed into the ether.

"You are not dead, and she is very dead," she assured Serein, who looked worse now than at the start of their conversation. "His brother told me. Then he also died. But their mother is here." A pause to consider her next words. Defne had decided that she was not a fan. "She... will like the children."  Probably. Maybe?
