I've had fame and fortune - Alaric - November 02, 2025
Alaric breathed easily in the early morning. He stretched out his body that was beginning to ache. Too many years of reckless driving. He had worn down the pedals and made the shifter smooth. But here he was.
Alive with children out and about. He had been a waestral, a rogue, he had been a lover to a prince and a princess, a story teller, a prisoner, a healer, a singer. And a leader. Now he was back in the lower ranks. Back to being just someone who helped out. It was both freedom and a cage.
But today he found himself beginning to look among the garden he had so lovingly tended. His thoughts moving from Elentari to Sialuk to Treepie to Kinusi to Katmai and back again.

Kira wandered the area, sniffing out what she knew of the pack. She hadn't been there long, and wanted to get to know the area.
She came upon a scent that was unfamiliar to her and went to investigate until she found a garden. For a moment, she watched curiously, until she realized someone else was there. It was a scent she hadn't noticed, but she recognized it from her time marking the borders with Kindle.
"Oh, hello!" she said, a hint of excitement in her voice. "I didn't notice you. I'm Kira." She introduced herself as she padded a bit closer to the older wolf.

A younger girl came into his view. One painted in colors of soil and snow. She was not large. Actually quite small. It amused him that she hadn't noticed him. But he kept quiet for a time. Allowing her to find her way and smell all his plants. His garden was a close second to his pride and joy of both blood and adopted daughters.
A warm chuckle rose from his chest.
So I noticed.
A swift shake of his head and he shifted.
I'm Alaric. Well Met Kira. And this is my garden. I raise a lot of healing herbs here. I am a healer, story teller and bard.

Kira chuckled as well at Alaric's comment. "I was just enjoying the scent of it. I suppose I hadn't expected a garden. It's nice to meet you." She looked to the garden, then away, to Alaric.
"That's a lot of roles," she said. Here she sat, still uncertain on what role she'd be able to find in the pack. "And they're all very needed," she added. Her gaze shifted back to the herbs. "What herbs do you have, then?" she asked, curious, even though she doubted she'd fully understand what the herbs were.

A gentle chuckle.
That's some of the flowers. They smell lovely.He motioned her around where a few still pushed through the rows. Not many as winter was fast upon them.
A gentle shrug.
I've had a few years to pick them out. And I was raised in a pack that you were taught most of it. It was simply assumed you would be one or all of those things.
He began to peruse the plants.
I have chamomile for upset tummies, and sage for infection. I have rosemary for the same. There is aloe for soothing and yarrow for pain. There is poppy for pain too, but I Don't like to use that one often. IT can cause after affects. I have mint for colds and runny noses. And so much more besides.

Kira listened as Alaric told her about his pack assuming one would be one or all of the roles he held. For a moment, she let herself wonder about what role she'd have had if her own pack and family had remained intact.
"The only pack I'd ever had got separated when I was still pretty young," she said. "I never had much chance to learn about much of anything." Her tone was light, as she didn't want to be too down about her past, and she shifted to the topic of the herbs quickly.
"There are so many herbs," she said, walking a bit closer to the garden to look. "Who knew how easy it could be to heal all that ails with things grown from the ground," she said.

Alaric hadn't thought about his parents in a while. HIs mama he always thought of her pretty fondly. And his dad. He had been a good wolf. A good father, but he had been strict. And controlling and he had expected things a certain way. And Al never fit in that role. Truthfully.
Nothing wrong with that. Means you can choose things that actually interest you now. Cause you have more time on your shoulders to do so.
he chuckled.
There are a lot. You have to be careful though. Some can kill you if you're not careful or take too much.

Kira thought about Alaric's words. "You're right. I want to decide what I'd like to do," she said. "Treepie said she may be able to help me decide on something. I just have to think on it."
The young wolf stepped away just slightly when Alaric said that some could kill her. Her head bowed in acknowledgement as she looked back to the medic. "So, careful with herbs," she noted. "Thanks for the warning." A chuckle escaped her lips as she said it.

Alaric smiled.
It's a freedom not many are awarded. I hope that you use it well. And there is so much to learn about. It's nice.
He shook his head with a small laugh.
Forgive me they won't hurt you in the way they are now. Only if you take too much of one or two of them. And some of the wild plants that I Do not cultivate here. I was merely trying to say that you simply have to becareful.

"Oh, all right," Kira said. "That makes sense." The young wolf looked at the garden some more, thinking a bit before she turned back to Alaric.
"You're right about it not being a freedom many are awarded," she said. "I consider myself lucky and I intend to make sure I use that freedom well."

A small head tilt. A firm nod. It was up to her now to do what she saw fit with the gift she'd been given. But he could help pave the way.
Do you have an interest in healing? Singing? Story telling? I can help with these things. I can also help with some defense and such, but that is not my usual go to. I prefer to handle things with a sense of diplomacy. Though if needed I can certainly handle myself if I must.

Kira thought for a few moments. "I've gone back and forth on what I'd like to try," she said. "I think I'd like to learn more about healing."
She was quiet for a moment before speaking again. "I want to help. Healing would be helpful. I also prefer not to fight, but I can if I need to."

Alaric listened, but said nothing at first. They were heavy in healers on the spear, but he could not deny her this. he briefly thought perhaps it was time for him to take his skills elsewhere and allow his child to rule and heal in his stead. It seemed fair. But also part of him loathed the thought of leaving.
Healing is an admirable trade. One I love myself. I can help you if you'd like or if you'd prefer someone closer to your own age. Kinusi probably would.

At this point, Kira didn't realize just how many healers there were in the area, but it was something she wanted to try. The thought excited her as she considered the possibility of it.
"You'd really be willing to teach me?" Kira asked, her tail flicking with excitement. "I'm fine either way, if you'd like to teach me, or if you'd prefer to have Kinusi teach me."

Alaric was growing older and though he loved healing. he also knew that someday, he may make a mistake. Because he wasn't forgetting things yet. But someday he may. It was a frightening concept. And it was important he stepped aside at that moment to let teh younger generation through.
Of course I would. I like to teach. And share my knowledge.And he did. Something he had found out as children had begun to be born on the spear, how many years ago now.

Kira's mouth lifted. "That would be great, Alaric, I'd love to learn from you!" Her tail flicked. "That is so kind of you to teach me." Her head ducked a bit, showing respect.
She was eager to learn and would be as good of a student as she could be. Finding something she can do to help this new pack excited her more than anything else really had.

Alaric chuckled.
I can teach you a bit in the winter, but most of my herbs are already dried. We would have to wait for Spring to show you where they all grow.
He moved some plants around, showing the one plant he was most proud of. An aloe plant that was growing and flowering nicely.
This is aloe. It has a type of stuff inside when broken that eases pain. It is called aloe. I'm pretty proud of it.

Kira was practically shaking with excitement. “That makes sense,” she said to him. When he pointed to the aloe, she stepped toward it and sniffed at it curiously.
“Aloe can help ease pain,” she said, commuting it to memory. “You should be proud!” Her tail flicked at him. “So, you were taught all this stuff?” She asked, looking at the herbs.
