The stillness felt wrong. Maddening, almost. The wetland held its breath, waiting for winter, and it had no warmth to spare for a lone wandering wolf. Come summer, perhaps, it would be lively with insects and critters, maybe even other wolves.
Right now, though, he was utterly alone. Grayday hissed a curse under his breath as his paw sank through a patch of muck that had looked deceptively solid. His foreleg came out wet and dark with mud, sloughing off green bits of rotting... actually, he didn't want to think about what that was. Instead he shook himself off and searched for more solid ground.
