You just don't know it yet, - Hokulani - November 05, 2025

With the birth of her children inching closer by the day, Hokulani felt a pit in her stomach growing - and it wasn't puppies this time, but worries.

The coast was still quiet, and growing colder by the day. She could see her breath in the freezing ocean air. It was abnormal for children to be born before winter passed, and she realized now that this was why. Hokulani herself had been born in the middle of the season, but where she grew up it was warm enough to keep her healthy. What about the pups she was about to have?

Laying in the grass, her claws gripped at it almost obsessively as various scenarios ran through her mind. What if they got sick? What if one walked into the freezing water? What if she couldn't keep them fed? What if, what if what if, what if,

Safe to say the 'what ifs' weren't ending any time soon.

Hokulani bit her lip. She wanted to do things the right way, give birth next to the ocean, but she just wasn't sure if it was worth the risk. There was a lot she was willing to put at stake; relationships, other's lives, her own life, but these pups were different.

She wanted them to live, she needed them to live. They were her's, and they were her. She would have to decide what was more important; her ambitions, or her legacy.

runa learned to roam the land, bit by bit.

she did not like it.

she liked the sea, and to swim, and to be near the weightlessness there. it helped her to think. it was quiet, in its way, and raging too, sometimes. the sea was a thing runa felt she understood.

but the sea had inroads. there was a vein reaching in to the earth which runa had found, and she followed, never straying too far. the lovely stench of rotten seaweed and gull's feathers clung to her, but otherwise the scents around her shifted, clarifying, sharpening in a way she found overwhelming.

there was also the scent of a person. as runa took notice of this, she stopped and lingered along the river's edge—tempted to turn tail, immediately.

Someone else was close by.

Hokulani turned her head to stare up the river, and she saw a small dark-coated figure. There were young, she was sure, and she instantly thought of Fabienne.

Despite herself, Hokulani lifted her head to howl to the stranger. She was inviting them to come closer, but not too close. She wanted to get a better look; there weren't many wolves on the coast these days.

the person wasn't too far — not far enough, though. she waited, she watched. they called! their song was so loud compared to the silence that runa knew; her head tilted in the manner of a dog hearing a whistling kettle for the first time, one way, another, ears out. the sound ceased eventually and the girl had to make a decision.

she paced in place, then... bolted in to the dark.

weaving among the ferns and trees, ducking brambles, she moved very quickly and almost silently. her feet had grown too big to be really stealthy, but runa was beginning to understand that, and compensate. when she made herself known again it was still at a distance, and sheltered by shadow — also, much nearer.

a little, "Rrrr?" thrummed from her molars.

Sneaky.

Do you not speak common either? Just how many of these kids were there, and where had their parents gone? Her neck leaning out, nose twitching for a sniff, she wondered if this one would be alright to feed. The vibe here was.. different, to say the least.

Hokulani chose to make a somewhat smart decision by rolling so her stomach wasn't out for the bite. If they were to attack her, most would go directly for the stomach. That was what Hokulani would do to a pregnant wolf, anyways.

more sounds. runa didn't show signs of understanding. they were more focused on the curious scents the stranger carried - and as they reached out with investigatory sniffing, the shadow moved to do the same. she tasted a few quick inhalations of the woman's air and then moved cautiously, but with great curiosity clear in the way she prowled around, to sniff at the stranger's shoulders, hips, the roundness of their belly no longer exposed but runa's interest obvious.

she licked her lips in a signal of deference, withdrawing, and turned to look around at their shared surroundings. were there others? runa could not remember ever seeing a wolf with this shape before. the closest thing that came to mind was seal-mother! so plump. smelling so sweetly, too.

cat-like, she perches on her haunches and idly cleans some mud from one of her forelegs.

Alright, her mind was made up. This one was kind of adorable.. in a scruffy sort of way.

Pushing herself to a stand, she gestured for them to follow. There would be something to spare in their cache, and Hokulani didn't mind sharing with a hungry kid.

She doubted she would be able to be so welcoming once her own puppies were here. They would be tiny for a good while, and all these wandering feral children might mistake them for a quick snack. Was that a horrible thing to imagine? Maybe.

It couldn't be much longer now, a few weeks at most. She was sore all over, and her throat was raw from vomiting. Crusty nips were probably the worst part though, what was the point of leaking when there was nothing to feed?

the moment the round woman moves, runa's focus is entirely upon her. every step, every sway of that girth, she eyed with such an intensity it would've been unnerving to witness—thankfully for hokulani, a wolf does not have eyes on the back of their head.

however, along that same vein—the mere shift of that round body in any direction caused runa to rise up and flutter-step backwards, sidelong, and away; swift and quiet, and maybe still watching... but from there on, vanished.
