needful things - Treepie - December 01, 2025

Aside from her inquiry at Moonglow, Tiuttuk didn’t intend to join any searches for the missing Peregrine. She felt terrible for Towhee and the rest of her family, but she didn’t see how such a young puppy could still be alive, much less far from home. He had likely fallen prey to a predator’s teeth, a thought which evoked a wince as Treepie wended around the mountain’s lower reaches.

Wyvern’s shadow fell across her, pulling Pie from her dreary thoughts. She glanced upward and barked a note to the nighthawk, who winged toward the glen and disappeared into the distance over its treetops. She’s hunting, the Ostrega noted idly. I should probably feed myself too…

She was tempted to save her energy and dip into a cache, though Treepie wouldn’t mind the distraction of a hunt. She licked her lips and and began to ascend toward one of numerous plateaus, keen to rustle up one of the many rodents which kept their homes among the alpine terrain.

Kira had gotten hungry and had begun to roam to find some food. She usually didn't enjoy taking the easy way out and getting food from the cache. Part of not being used to being in a pack, she supposed. Getting "help" from others was still foreign to her.

As she headed out, she noticed Treepie and trotted up to her. "Hello, Pie," she said in greeting. "How are you?"

Once she reached her destination, Tiuttuk bent down to nose among the loam. There were many scents to sift through; she tried to suss out the most promising among them. As she winnowed, her ears flicked in response to approaching footfalls. She did not lift her head until Kira’s familiar voice filled her ears.

She snorted a little and straightened, eyes soft as they landed on Kira’s face. She felt a little thrill at seeing her, though Treepie couldn’t say whether it was really a crush or maybe just a squish? Now that any sense of competition or jealousy had been removed from the equation, she found herself quite endeared to the other woman.

Move over, Kinusi, she thought with a flick of her tail, she’s gonna be my bestie!

Hey, Kira. I’m… She almost said some variation of “good,” though it felt disingenuous, considering the Redhawks’ predicament. I’m okay. I don’t know if you heard, but my little cousin went missing. I was there when he was born, which wasn’t long ago at all, Pie said heavily. Honestly, I’m afraid the worst has happened, though they haven’t found a—she swallowed—body.

That was a sobering thought, compared to her previous one. Tiuttuk let out a breath and took a step closer to Kira. She reached out to brush their muzzles in an overture of friendship, then seated herself. Her two-toned tail wrapped tightly around her right hip, the dark tip resting over her matching paws.

Anyway, how have you been? Busy discovering all the deepest desires of your heart, I hope, Pie said, shooting for some levity.

Kira's expression showed her shock when Treepie talked about her little cousin. "Oh my gosh," she said, her tail flicking with worry and frustration. "I hope he's okay," she said, suddenly feeling restless, as if she could help find him.

"I've been good," she said, but the words sounded dull, even to her. It seemed clear that Treepie was trying to avoid talking about her cousin, or else she'd have said that her stuff wasn't important and ask questions.

"I haven't been doing much of that, yet," she said with a chuckle. "Eventually, but it hasn't happened yet."

RE: needful things - Treepie - December 01, 2025

I’m so excited to watch your love life develop, Pie said with a little grin, but I don’t just mean romance. How’s the healing going? Have you made any progress? Do I need to injure myself to give you some practice?

She wouldn’t mind if if Kira wanted to play doctor with her, a thought which made her giggle on the inside. She was neither sick nor injured, though perhaps she could still offer her assistance.

I know we mostly seek out medics when we’re not well. But shouldn’t you probably learn anatomy, maybe know how to perform a general physical assessment? I’m happy to volunteer, she said with only a slight edge of nervousness, well aware that Kira would discover her abnormality if they went through with it.

RE: needful things - Kira Lazore - December 01, 2025

Kira chuckled at Treepie, then started to shake her head and say she hadn't. "No, you don't need to injure yourself," she said. "I-"

Her brain stopped working for a moment when Treepie volunteered to help her so she could learn anatomy.

"I-um..." she sputtered out. It was as if she suddenly realized she should learn anatomy. "If it-" she started, but paused just a moment. "If you wa- If you think it'll help."

She could feel herself flush from the awkwardness she felt.

There was something adorable about Kira’s stammering, though an exclamatory note rang in the back of Treepie’s head. She could see that her suggestion had made the other woman uncomfortable. Perhaps, in her eagerness to befriend Kira, she had been too eager, too forward. She’d put her on the spot.

I mean, what do I know? I’m no healer. It’s your call, Pie said lightly, trying not to let on to her internal cringing. I’m just happy to help in whatever way you need. That’s what friends do, right? she tacked on with a slightly crooked smile.

RE: needful things - Kira Lazore - December 01, 2025

Kira was thoughtful for a moment. "I mean, it...could help." She said. The wolf didn't recognize the feelings bubbling inside her. Was she thinking of Treepie as more than a friend? Or was she just nervous?

Any thoughts of Treepie being more than a friend were put into a box in Kira's mind and packed away. She's involved with Kindle, anyway.

"I don't know what will help, but it couldn't hurt, right?"

RE: needful things - Treepie - December 01, 2025

It couldn’t hurt, Pie agreed gently, taking a moment to search Kira’s face as she arrived at this conclusion. But, hey, if you’re not comfortable for any reason, we don’t have to. Okay?

Suddenly, she remembered Kindle’s words of yore: “I’m not blind, Treepie.” Kira might be innocent in many ways, but she wasn’t blind either. Perhaps she was already aware of Pie’s anomalous anatomy. Maybe, despite her own belief to the contrary, Kira wasn’t comfortable with the idea of examining or touching her. That thought sent Tiuttuk’s cheeks burning.

RE: needful things - Kira Lazore - December 01, 2025

"It's not that I'm uncomfortable," Kira said, carefully. Her words were uncertain. "You know I'm inexperienced." She laughed nervously. "I guess I'm just nervous, even if this isn't romantic. It's rather intimate, I suppose."

She could feel her face flushing again as she tried not to think about the thoughts that had occurred to her. She again reminded herself of Treepie's involvement with Kindle.

Kira wasn't blind, and she had noticed Treepie's "anmalous anatomy", but she wasn't about to say anything. Partially due to her innocence, but also because she didn't want to be rude by asking about it.

RE: needful things - Treepie - December 01, 2025

Kira’s riposte simultaneously mortified and reassured Treepie. She didn’t know quite how to respond to such candor, nor the implications of the Lazore’s nerves. But as she stood there, her cheeks so hot she swore they must be steaming in the cold December air, a thought slowly formed.

I’m no medic, she repeated her earlier words, and I don’t want to put any pressure on you. She paused. But if these things make you nervous, maybe exposure and practice wouldn’t be a bad idea? I mean, if you’re going to heal folks, you’re going to need to be comfortable with poking and prodding them, right? Another pause. It doesn’t have to be me and it doesn’t have to be now. Just some food for thought, I guess.

As if cued, her stomach interrupted with an embarrassingly loud growl. Right, she’d been searching for a meal before Kira had approached her. Pie huffed out a dry laugh, wondering if her friend might want to join her on a hunt… or if she might be more comfortable excusing herself. Feeling a vague sense of déjà vu, the Ostrega shuffled her paws and stayed mum.

RE: needful things - Kira Lazore - December 01, 2025

Kira nodded. "Maybe it can wait," she said. "But, I agree. I'll have to get used to it if I want to be a medic." She nodded a bit.

When she heard Treepie's stomach, she chuckled. "Let's get some food, for now," she said. "I'm hungry." And it was true, she was hungry as well, she'd almost forgotten about it. "Do you want to go for a hunt?"

RE: needful things - Treepie - December 01, 2025

Something curdled in her stomach when Kira agreed with her, then said it would have to wait. Pie told herself she shouldn’t take it so personally, but it was hard not to jump to conclusions. The Lazore didn’t want to touch her—the very thought of it made her nervous—and she’d cited the intimacy of it. Tiuttuk idly raised a paw, touching the back of it to one flaming cheek just to make sure it hadn’t actually burst into flame.

Aya, she whispered harshly to herself.

Her ears pricked when Kira invited her to hunt. It assauged some of her self-consciousness, though she felt an uncomfortable prickle between her shoulder blades. She rolled them and swept back into all fours, bobbing her head and putting on a game face.

It probably goes without saying that I’m hungy too. I was actually sorting through scents when you arrived. There are quite a few pikas running around this area. I think their colony may live there, Pie said, gesturing toward what looked like a pile of boulders piled unceremoniously against a sheer rock wall.

Stealth and swiftness were crucial when hunting any small game, particularly these wily rodents. They could dive into any old crack or crevice in the blink of an eye. Her loud stomach may present a problem, though Treepie was willing to try. Was Kira? Her yellow eyes flicked to her face.

RE: needful things - Kira Lazore - December 01, 2025

Kira nodded, her heart racing as she thought about the potential implications of what Treepie had suggested. Was Kira wanting more? She was finally settling into something safe, so maybe she could allow herself to think about it?

Just, not with Treepie, who is involved with her...kind of cousin.

"Okay," Kira said, eyeing where Treepie thought the colony was. "Let's see what we can get," she whispered. "What do you want me to do?" She still wasn't used to hunting with others, so she was uncertain about how different it would be.
