she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

I'm going to say she ran ahead of @Dreamgirl and Etienne! She will come back and meet them, or feel free to post in this thread also. I am just eager to have her home before she is missed!
Angel returned exhausted and a bit sore, but otherwise in good health and good spirits. She still wore her fox fur, and carried on her back the skull and antlers of a bull elk fresh from its first rut.

She passed through the borders without thinking, though she did detect many new scents. It seemed as though the population had doubled since she last set foot here! It made her just a little nervous, but she was pleased, too.

There were finally women.

She howled once she was within the territory, letting @Sega  and @Elowyn know that she had returned. She was heading straight for the den that she shared with the other girl, her tail whisking in excitement at the prospect of seeing her again —

Seeing both of them.

And giving them her gifts.

Elowyn lifted her head when she heard the howl. It sounded like Angel, so she ran toward where she heard it. As she got closer, she realized it was their den. Her heart raced just a bit at the thought. Their den.

She approached the den and greeted her friend. "How was your trip, Angel?" she asked, her tail flicking excitedly.

The antlers were shaken off and places carefully by the mouth of the den. That was for Sega, in part a gift, and in part a display of her strength and resolve. A challenge, almost. He could match her in strength, but could he in his intent and devotion? Would he be proud? Humbled? Off-put?

These thoughts fled from her at the sweet sound of Elowyn's voice.

"Elowyn!" she cried, ignoring the question for a moment to draw the other woman into a tight embrace. It was how she'd been raised, after all, and she was excited to see her friend still here in their home, at their den.

"It was wonderful," she assured her. "I have three new baby brothers, and I made a new friend, as well as running into a sister of my family."

She stepped away, surveying Elowyn the way her mother surveyed her after she'd been away. She judged her healthy, and her tail spun in delight.

"How have things been here?" she asked. "Did you miss me?"

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

Elowyn's own tail spun in excitement as Angel talked about her trip, though a hint of jealousy hit her when she mentioned making a new friend. She pushed the thought away and focused on the conversation.

"It sounds like a lovely trip!" she said. "And busy. Things have been good here. I also made a couple of new friends." She stepped closer. "And of course I missed you, it feels like it's been forever."

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Her heart was warmed by this answer, though she laughed as Elowyn told her of new connections.

"I should hope so! There are so many new scents in the valley."

Angel stepped forward in time with Elowyn to embrace her again. It soothed her weary spirit to be near the other girl. Like coming home. Like lying down to rest.

"I brought gifts," she said into Elowyn's fur. Reluctantly, she pulled away, only to regain her passion as she swooped down to unroll the bundle she'd brought along. "A raccoon pelt, for our bedding!" she said of the bundle, though it would need to be washed, as she'd carried it in her mouth all this way. "Pretty feathers to put in your fur — "

Angel picked out a pheasant wing feather and tucked it into Elowyn's scruff, beaming.

"And some moonstone, to decorate," was the last thing. Most of it was for Elowyn — she kept one stone aside to gift to one of her new packmates.

"Oh, Angel, you're so sweet!" said Elowyn as she looked at the gifts. She was beaming at her friend. "Thank you, so much!" She looked at the gifts and then back to Angel.

"What's that one?" she asked, nodding her head at the gift left to the side.

"There have been quite a few new wolves in the area. I've met two, I wonder how many more," she wondered, in her excitement, she was jumping from topic to topic as her tail flicked.

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Angel nosed at the moonstone.

"I think I will keep just one, in case we find someone else who needs something pretty for their den," she replied, her tail whisking. "I want the women to want to stay!"

She gestured then to the rack of elk antlers, which her back still carried heavy bruises from transporting all this way.

"I will give these to Sega," she told her friend, turning back to her with glinting eyes. "We will see what he makes of it. He sent a pelt home with me for my mother."

She could hardly contain her excitement, at that, flushing all over from embarrassment despite her pleasure at this development.

"But tell me about these wolves you've met," she demanded. "Are they nice? Do you like them?"

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

"Oh, that's nice!" Elowyn said. "And yes, it would be great if the women stayed," she said, laughing a bit. "And that's so nice of you to get a gift for Sega, too. He's nice, I'm sure he'll like it."

Her tail flicked around. "Callahan and Ravah," she said. "Both very nice so far. I've only seen each of them once, though, so I don't know much about them. Ravah grew up with Sega."

She backed away shyly. "Sorry, I seem to be rambling. Tell me about your new friend, your siblings."

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

That was interesting. Angel felt her hackles rise, just a little, at the idea of a childhood friend coming here to join Sega's pack. She thought fleetingly of Raiyuk, her heart beating just a little out of sync as she remembered his handsome face. She could well imagine another woman thinking the same of the lark-pelted alpha.

Still. She hoped that this Ravah would stay. She did not, after all, have any desire to win Sega's affection by being the only option.

"I'm sure," she agreed of the elk skull, casting one last glance at it. "You don't think it's too forward, though?"

When asked about her new friends and siblings, she gave another wag of her tail.

"A medicine man named Etienne," she offered, thinking excitedly of the man. "I need to head out to find him again soon — but he isn't far. And my grandmother's daughter, Dreamgirl. I believe they will not come to stay with us."

She ducked into the den to begin arranging the stones and the pelts, new and old, speaking over her shoulder to continue the conversation:

"I am happy to hear what you have to say, Elowyn! My brothers are still very small, hardly enough to talk about. But their names are White Bear, Valor, and Skyfall. They take the Morningside name."

Different from her own Morningbreeze. She felt just a little oddly about that, but it was still close enough to give her a sense of togetherness.

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

"Too forward, why would it be too forward?" Elowyn asked, and then it clicked, but she stayed quiet. "I don't think so," she said. "I think it'll be a nice way to say thank you."

Elowyn watched as Angel arranged the new decor for their den. "I'm glad your new brothers are doing well. And I'm excited to meet your new friend and your grandmother's daughter."

Her tail flicked around excitedly as she and Angel chatted. "I'm glad you're back, though. It's been awful lonely here without you."

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Angel was exasperated, though quite endeared by how slow on the uptake Elowyn was being. Perhaps her traditions were different.

Then again — perhaps Sega's were, too.

"When you give a man a gift like that, it's never just to say thank you," she informed her, patiently, her eyes sparkling with both nerves and amusement. "If you just wanna say thanks you give him food. But if you give him a pelt or a skull, or just something pretty, then that means you like him. More than that, really. And I think that's what he meant when he asked me to take a gift to my mother."

She scanned Elowyn's face, her nerves worse than ever.

"But maybe he just meant it in a... A friendly way?" she asked, trying to wrap her head around the idea. There was no way, was there?

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

"Well, he asked you to take a gift to your mother," she said. "So, maybe it is because he likes you."

She found a spot to lay down and rested her head on her paws as she spoke. "I mean, even if it's not because he likes you, I don't think it'll be forward. Simply returning the gesture."

Elowyn lifted her head. "And if it is because he likes you, you've got your show of affection. If not, just say it was because you appreciated his gift to your mother."

The young wolf was trying to give advice, but she didn't have much experience in this arena. She watched Angel to see if she was giving good advice or not.

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Ooh, that was smart. It was against Angel's nature to be duplicitous in this way, but she could see how it would make things easier for everyone if she had a way to walk this declaration back. She toyed with the idea, wondering if that was really something she wanted.

"I suppose we'll just have to see how it goes," she replied, shrugging it off. "If he's too awkward about it, maybe I'll let him off the hook that way. But my mother taught me to be honest about what I want — so I will try that, first."

This advice helped.

"So, what about this Callahan," she asked, finishing her decorating and turning back to Elowyn. She patted the spot next to her on their bedding, inviting her closer. "Is he dashing? Fit? Handsome?"

It was quite the name, she thought. Callahan.

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

Elowyn nodded when he advice seemed to go over well. "Well, I hope that Sega shares your affections," she said, smiling at her friend.

The conversation turned to Callahan and Elowyn thought for a moment as she moved closer to Angel. "Yeah, I guess," she said. "He was very kind. I went down to the lake and he sort of just came out of it," she shook her head and laughed. "It was awfully cold, so I don't know how he enjoyed it but he did."

She paused, thinking about her conversation with Callahan. "We had a good little chat, and shared a meal, and then he was off. I haven't seen him since."

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Kind was good, though an impish part of her would rather have heard about Callahan's physical attributes. She was eager to see Elowyn blossom in this place as well — but then again, something did not sit quite right with her about the other girl running off with some guy.

Kind or no. In the same territory or elsewhere.

"He's a good hunter, then," she said to herself. But was he good enough for Elowyn?

She supposed it wasn't a pressing matter.

"And what about Ravah?" she asked. Is she prettier than me?

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Elowyn - December 03, 2025

Elowyn shrugged. "I don't know. It was in a cache, but I'm assuming he isn't totally bad at it." She chucked a bit. "But, I could be wrong."

She hummed a bit. "Ravah. She was also nice. Like I said, she grew up with Sega. And I don't think she's interested in him," she added, but didn't tell her friend about Ravah asking her about her thoughts on him.

RE: she needed wide open spaces - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

She was grateful when Elowyn answered her unasked question, filing the information away for later thought. She was eager to meet someone from Sega's homeland, and perhaps to learn more of the language from her. She wanted to be able to speak with them in their own tongue, one day — but for now, she could simply be excited to make a new friend.

"Well," she sighed, settling in just a little tighter. "How's the weather been?"

She would chat a little longer before taking the skull to Sega's sleeping place, and going to meet her friends.

Shall we fade here?
