room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

For @Sega but feel free to invade!!! I am happy with anyone.
It was not long after her reunion with Elowyn that Angel set off in search of the chief. She carried the elk skull toward his sleeping place, slung uncomfortably over her back once more. It was easy to imagine the agony of being speared by one of the sharp antlers — she'd come close to it a few times both in the hunting of this elk, and in carrying it home!

She took in all the new scents and admired the landscape as she walked, taking any excuse to take her time. Part of her wanted to tuck tail and return the skull to her own den, where she could pretend it had always meant to go.

But she brought it to his sleeping place and arranged it there quite obtrusively. He would not miss it, and neither would anyone else.

She thought of calling for him, then. Instead, she turned as if to walk away.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Barrett - December 03, 2025

Invading this for just a moment... <3

While Barrett had gotten accustomed to the scents of all the wolves that lived within the valley, there was no doubt that, at times, he still felt crowded. Perhaps even startled by seeing packmates that he hadn't had the chance to meet, yet. Today was the same—an unfamiliar scent rode on the winds, carrying that of Great Sky, but also, something... foreign.
This time, Barrett would investigate. Followed the scents, up until he found a girl, draped in warm russets, beiges and oak-browns, her undersides and legs kissed by snow. He had not seen this girl before, not even in passing, and so he watched as she gave an offering to the band-chiefs cave. It was now that he gave a low chuff, announcing his presence so that he may not startle.
'R you... Angel? He asked once she had turned halfway towards him. His head tilted; studying her. He was sure that Sega would arrive soon.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

She was just a little startled when she turned to see a dark beast of a man so near. But her tail whisked in automatic greeting — she couldn't imagine that he meant to harm her.

"That's me," she agreed, peering at his face in turn. "You must be Callahan," she named him. It seemed like a good bet, at least.

She didn't set off just yet, lingering here to speak with the stranger.

"You spoke with my dear friend, Elowyn," she informed him. "We share a den a little further out."

He was handsome, she decided, the way that Rodyn was handsome. Though Callahan was younger than her once-alpha, she thought he seemed heavy in some way. Perhaps just physically, as he was of a size with Sega. Both of them made her feel small, somehow, though she was well made and athletic herself. Not a small wolf at all — but still shorter and slighter than these males.

It annoyed her, just a little. She tried to let that go.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Barrett - December 03, 2025

Ah, he was right. This was good. Barrett hummed in acknowledgement, and when she guessed his own name, he gave her a firm nod. Angel mentioned Elowyn, then. The young girl who he found himself making conversation and eating with. A fond memory, he thought, and he nodded at that, too. I did. She's a lovely thing, huh? His tone was kind.
He could feel her eyes on him, now. Sizing him up, almost. To this, he would not reply, but rather he said: I've seen yer hides hangin' up in the clearin', and, I gotta say, yer mighty skilled, he wore an approving smile. I was hopin', that, sometime when yer not busy, that you might be in'erested in teachin', and in this, he was rather hopeful. His tail swayed.
No pressure, o'course, he continued. Just, found myself intrigued, is all, he watched her carefully. Didn't want to assume, or offend, in some way, by asking. Just knew that it would be a good skill to have.
One that, for whatever reason, he was incredibly eager to learn.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Ravah - December 03, 2025

just a cameo, but im happy to have her join if shes called for :3

there, upon a rise not too far away, is ravah.

watching as the stranger girl, smelling still of great sky, approaches the den of the chieftain. carrying with her a gift, and one none too small; and this, this small fact draws a knowing look to curve upon her frost touched mouth.

sega had a young admirer. perhaps she had been looking in the wrong spot?

either way, the graceful she-wolf moves softly upon the rise, turning adjacent to them; watching with piqued interest when barrett appears. eyes stalking along his muscled broadside, and only then do her eyes narrow.

she resigns herself to a snow-bitten silhouette in the distance.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Angel was not sure if it was a quirk of his speech or some deeper, cultural disregard, but her eyes narrowed as Elowyn was called a thing. She would assume it was a compliment until she knew better, but her tone was still assertive when she answered,

"Exceedingly."

The other girl was under her protection, and she would not hear any disrespect or, little gods save them, disparaging about her friend.

But a compliment worked well to soothe her watchfulness into candor.

"Oh, you should see the pelts from the women in my village," she replied, waving this away. She was pleased enough, and proud of what she'd accomplished, but flustered enough that it felt better to demure.

Still, "I can teach you, if you like," she offered. Sega could do it just as well — but she thought this would be a good skill to hone and capitalize on. After all, the moonwoman herself had been excellent with pelts, and Angel held almost as much respect for her as for her own mother.

"It's women's work, where I'm from," she teased him, wondering what he would make of that.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Barrett - December 03, 2025

Angel spoke of pelts from another village. A village that Barrett thought to see, someday, but here, now, in the present, he focused on her next words: an offer, one of teaching, and Barrett smiled. Amazin', he nodded, smile growing. And at her tease, he would shake his head, chuckling. Sega said 's much, he hummed. Reckon I can 'ave gen'le paws when I need 'em, right? giving a curious tilt of his head, ever humorous.
He gave a flex of his paws, now, but ultimately looked to the skull that she had left in the chiefs' den. You bring 'im down yerself? Barret asked.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

So he was not afraid to do women's work. That boded well, she thought — but she did look dubiously down at his paws, which looked rather big and clumsy to her.

"I mostly use my teeth," she explained, imagining the mess that Callahan might make.

The question had her flushing — under her dark fur, thankfully.

"I did," she replied, failing to mention that he'd been young and inexperienced, and injured by another male during the rut. With infection in his body, Angel had been able to take him down without help, but with no small amount of effort. "There was a great hunt going on near my family's village. I mostly missed it — but I wanted to participate anyway."

And to bring something substantial back for Sega.

"Enough about me," she said, now moving away from the den. She'd decided that she didn't want to be there when Sega discovered the gift. She'd let him process it in his own time, in whatever way came naturally to him. She attempted to lead Callahan away.

"Where did you come from, Callahan?" she asked him

RE: room to make a big mistake - Sega - December 03, 2025

angel's howl was heard amongst the plains. it had caught his attention, endearingly so, but he'd been busy with @Sky Eater, teaching the young boy how to sniff out the oils of caribou musk from the mounds of snow.

busy, indeed, as she has gotten when he rounded the hillside.

he slowed when he saw her leaving his den, callahan beside her, the elk skull bright against the entrance. something eased in his chest at the sight of her whole and strong.

angel, he said, voice low.

he looked her over once, quick but careful, then nodded, tail giving a single sweep behind him.

leaving again?

his gaze flicked to the skull, then back to her, a quiet warmth behind it.

hunt strong, he added. very strong.

he stepped closer.

for me?

RE: room to make a big mistake - Barrett - December 03, 2025

edited for sega's arrival! <3
Mighty impressive, replied the brute, nodding at her confirmation for taking down an elk all on her lonesome. She was a girl, a yearling, hardly nearing two, so, he was genuine when he said such a thing. Didn't know many yearlings hunting elk all by themselves, and when they did, well, they usually didn't come home with a skull strewn over there back, even less so without any wounds whatsoever. So, respects raised, huh?
When she moved to leave, Barrett would follow, only after deducing that he was, in fact, invited to do so. When Angel asked of him, he felt a lump grow in his throat. Dunno, he answered truthfully. Woke up 'ere, one day. Had a—like, a sting a' mem'ries, like when ya burn yerself on somethin', but now, I got no clue, his tail gave a subtle lash, once, twice, angry at the amnesia he was experiencing. Upset, and, even more so, heartbroken by the part that he felt missing, somewhere deep inside, hidden within.
Barrett, Callahan, sucked in a breath. Hopefully you got yerself a better answer, came a dry chuckle. Don't mean to be a bore, n' all.
Sega moved in quickly, though, and Barrett let his words trail of naturally as the chief approached. He gave a nod, low and respectful, at his arrival. Sega did not direct his words to the outlaw, which he did not mind, but rather, focused solely on Angel. Barrett moved to step aside, allowing the two some room. He would linger for just a moment or two longer.
Should either of them wish him to leave, he certainly would.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

Angel stole a surprised and confused look at Callahan when he explained that he didn't know his own history. Having never been burned before, Angel wasn't quite sure what to make of the comparison — but she was stricken by the idea of knowing nothing about her past. About her mother, about her father, about Moontide — even about Round Valley.

"That's..." she began, not quite knowing what to say —

But that was when Sega showed up, and Angel's field of vision narrowed almost at once. Her breath caught (embarrassing!) at the sight of him. It seemed that absense truly did make the heart grow fonder.

"I brought it for you," she confirmed, her voice stronger than she felt. She wanted to say that she had killed it with his face in her mind's eye, but she was not quite bold enough just yet. There was still a chance she was misinterpreting these things.

Do you like it? she wanted to ask, but didn't.

"I carried it from my homeland," she said instead, a particular weight behind her words. She had gone to great trouble to bring him this thing. It was more than a gift. It was a gesture.

What would he do with it?

Oh God sorry Barrett she's gone. Also, she will tell Sega in this thread that she's going out to meet Dreamgirl and bring her back to join! But it's not like a journey it's just a little jaunt.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Sega - December 03, 2025

sega’s gaze flicked once toward callahan— a silent command, simple and respectful.

go. give us space.

a small tilt of his head sent the younger male stepping back, then further still, until he melted into the edge of the clearing. sega did not watch him leave. his attention had already narrowed, golden eyes settling fully on angel.

the elk skull gleamed pale against the denmouth, the antlers catching winter light like carved bone branches. he approached it slowly, reverently almost, then looked back to her.

angel, he murmured, the word carrying a weight it hadn’t before.

he circled the skull once, testing the sharp, clean lines of it with the tip of his muzzle. no cracks. no rot. no signs of easy death. a healthy beast. a hard kill. her kill.

you hunt this? sega asked, voice low, almost awed. alone?

his jaw tightened, not with doubt, but at worry for how dangerous the act would be.

regardless, hn. incredible, he said, breath warm in the cold air. strong animal. strong work.

he nudged one sweeping antler with his paw, respectful.

we put at feasting place, he decided. all great sky will see your strength.

he lifted his head, meeting her eyes. his tone softened then, something warm and private threading into the roughness.

you bring far, he said quietly. for me.

a small breath. a deeper one.

i like it.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Barrett - December 03, 2025

A command known. A command obeyed. He nodded once to Angel, then, to Sega, he would do the same, though a sly smile teased at the corners of his mouth; revealing a memory that creeped from the corners of his mind.
But, it was with quickness that he left, now. Headed for the lake.

As was typical for the outlaw.

— Exit Barrett!

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 03, 2025

He spoke her name differently, now. Angel stood taller, watching as he investigated her gift. She was proud of how she'd taken down the elk — young and brash and somewhat injured as it had been — even if she hoped she wouldn't soon be asked to demonstrate her skill alone.

But she was an asset to this pack, she thought. She could be something to him.

She lifted her chin and brought it down in a decisive nod at his question. She'd hunted it, all on her own, and she'd carried its mighty rack here on her own shoulders as well. She waited for him to say more, forcing herself not to simper under the praise, or to huff and blush and demure when he said it would go in a place of honor. This was what she wanted, she told herself — she had to act like it, too.

"I'm glad," she said simply, feeling that discussion of the gift had ended. She wasn't quite sure where that left them, except that the ball was firmly in his court, now. Still, her eyes traced the strong lines of his face, and of his body, and she could not help but feel a tiny twinge of disappointment.

This courting business made her feel awfully impatient.

"I brought something else," she said to him. "A wolf from my father's line. I wish her to stay with us here, in Great Sky."

RE: room to make a big mistake - Sega - December 03, 2025

sega’s eyes drifted from the skull back to her, studying the lift of her chin, the heat still in her breath. she had come back stronger— he saw it immediately.

hn. this one go to feast, he said, touching the antler with care. good decoration for pack hunt. before next moon. for your return.

that last part sat warm between them.

then, quieter, with a softness he rarely let slip,

how home?

his gaze searched hers, looking for whatever story she carried back.

when she told him of the wolf she’d brought, he straightened slightly, curiosity and respect flickering through his gold eyes.

you bring kin, he echoed. someone of your father’s blood.

a firm nod followed; trust given simply because it came from her.

she stay, sega said. great sky welcome her.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 04, 2025

"Well," she laughed, pleased at the idea of a hunt, "We must have a feast, if this is to decorate the place where feasts are held!"

For her return, he'd said. She wanted to ask if he'd missed her, as she'd asked Elowyn. Instead, he asked her about her family and whisked away all other thoughts.

"I have three baby brothers, now," she replied, her heart squeezing at the thought of them. "Valor, White Bear, and Skyfall. My mother is well."

At the bit about her father's blood, she hesitated. She and Rosie were her father's only blood, and that made her incredibly sad to think about. She decided that she would claim Dreamgirl as such all the same. It was what Easy had assured her was the Morningside way.

"How are things here?" she asked him, searching his face. "Elowyn said someone from your homeland has come to stay. Ravah. And more besides that."

She remembered Callahan, all of the sudden, but when she glanced to where she'd last seen him, it was to find him gone.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Sega - December 04, 2025

sega’s smile was small but sure.

mother goood....this make me glad, he said. and three brothers… strong boys. they will grow loud, no?

at the mention of ravah—and the others—he nodded once.

yes. ravah is here. callahan. many traveler who want to stay.

his eyes drifted briefly over the valley, then back to her.

you brought good fortune with you, angel. skull will stand at the feast site. next moon, we hunt in your honor.

a lighter breath, almost a laugh.

and i’m glad you came home.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 04, 2025

Loud, yes — and stinky, she thought, remembering Dreama's refrain with fondness. She was a little sad not to watch them grow up, but... Well. They'd be alright. They'd know her name, and she would show them her face from time to time. That would have to be enough.

Lost in her thoughts, she only nodded in acknowledgement of his words. Good fortune for the pack — she was glad for it, and tried to believe it. But when he spoke next, it jolted her out of her ruminating.

She turned back to him with a little smile.

"Ma’ tsáava ni?" she asked him, cheeky now. She'd been turning the words over and over in her head since he'd spoken them, and she now had an inkling of what they meant.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Sega - December 04, 2025

loved writing this one
sega paused mid-step, ears flicking toward her as the familiar cadence of his own tongue rolled off her lips. bold. teasing. perfect.

his mouth curved, slow and crooked, a smirk pulling at one corner.

ma’ tsáava ni, he echoed back at her, clicking his tongue playfully. hah. you use my words on me now.

he leaned in just a fraction, enough for warmth to touch the space between them.

not that much, he tsks, as if offended, though the gleam in his eyes betrays him—equal parts proud and amused. you learn too fast. dangerous.

a soft shoulder-brush as he stepped past her, the curve of his tail flicking lightly against her leg.

come, he said, glancing back with that same teasing look. say it again. maybe i believe you this time.

RE: room to make a big mistake - Angel Oak - December 04, 2025

Angel was reproachful when her trick was turned around on her. Even though she'd started it, she hadn't meant for him to turn around and accuse her of missing him. But she had, if she was being honest with herself. If she was being really honest with herself, she might even call it pining.

"Not that much!" she repeated, peering at his face to see if he meant it or not. She thought maybe he was teasing — but maybe he also meant to let her down easy. Maybe he was playing with her feelings.

It was hard to think when they stood this close together.

She did not follow him.

"I must go and fetch my cousin," she disagreed, falling into the Morningside tradition of naming any vague relation her "cousin". "Perhaps you willl learn to miss me in the hours that I'm away."

She returned his jest, her smile daring. But she did not turn away from him yet. If he truly wanted her to follow, she would not deny him.
