Where flames flicker and wave - Lucius Mortis - February 24, 2015 He slowly came into awareness as bright sunlight beat down on his unopened eyes, promising the start of a good day. He lay still for a moment, enjoying the songs of birds and crashing of waves around him. But the roman was not one to lay still and let the day go to waste, so carefully stood, rolling his massive shoulders and arching his scarred back, sending off the last bit of stiffness after his slumber. Soon, the brute was soundlessly loping through the snow, huge paws acting a bit like snowshoes, though his legs still became buried at times. He was eager to make it to the shore, where the sea pushed back the snow and left a relatively clear area, save for the clumps of seaweed that littered the beach, giving off a slight stench. His paws left snow and sunk into sand instead, leaving behind two rows of almost perfect foot-prints. At the waters edge we sat, letting the frigid waves wash over him. The brute had always had a strange fascination with the sea, and it's many different emotions. Sometimes, it threw up waves and spat out dead things, catching sea fowl in it's paws of water, churning the silt under it's waves into a whirling frenzy. But other days it was still and silent, offering a meal to the same birds it had attempted to ensnare only some time before, letting the anger die down before it's gentle waves. Today the sea was on his side, and remained calm and peaceful. He offered a silent prayer to Neptune, and a thanks for this calm day, before gazing with electric eyes at the sight the thick fog had hide from him the day before. An island. Even from this distance, he could see a hazy peak reaching toward the sky, and a dark green blur that could be a thick wood. It was beautiful, but so far across deep waters... A screech made him look up. There it was, an eagle, the same on, he believed, that came to him many times in times of uncertainty. It circled high above him, and he followed it's every move with excited eyes. Suddenly, it broke it's circle and flapped toward the island, soaring low over the waves, until it was out of sight. A final, softer call came to him then, and he knew what he had to do. |
