The way the fox dragged itself—herself, if scent was any indication—from the pool made Wildfire think, She's injured. Mixed in with the sulfurous odor lingering about her head was the scent of blood. Her amber eyes took in the broken skin, then flicked to the creature's face. She was lucky Wildfire had a full stomach, because despite her benevolent intentions, it was suddenly difficult for the hunter to deny the instinct to take advantage of the wounded animal.
The pathetic mewl plucked two very different strings in Wildfire's heart. Simultaneously, she felt pity, as well as a rising urge to attack. She took a step back, not trusting herself to overcome her instincts. They took her by surprise. She hadn't been a hunter for very long, yet here she was, practically overtaken by her feral impulses in the presence of a weakened creature.
"What happened to you?" she wondered aloud, not sure the vulpine would be able to understand her or make a reply. But a conversation might serve as a good distraction... and, quite frankly, save the fox's life.
