He never made it to the creek. As soon as he laid eyes on its borderline, Cambria felt mortified all over again. He had only wanted to help, though he’d surely made matters worse. How could he possibly show his face? Especially with the scent of a stranger’s season possibly clinging to him? He shook his head and withdrew.

Days later, he skulked within view of the creek once more. He wanted to see Etienne, apologize for what he’d said to Leonore and then… well, he wasn’t sure what might happen next. The Dragonling supposed it depended on the man’s reaction. If he forgave Cambria, perhaps they could recover. If not—if he asked Cambria to get lost—he would absolutely heed Etienne’s wishes.

He paused to sniff at the wind, sighing when his friend’s scent wove into his nose. He squinted into the territory, hoping to catch a glimpse of Etienne, and instead spotted a young wolf frolicking, specks of bright red wound into her fur.

Remembering just how badly he’d bungled things the last time he’d spoken to a young girl from the creek, Cambria shrank away.
