He always had the feeling that Peridot knew more than she let on of his turmoil. She never questioned him, though, and for that he was grateful. Some things were better left unspoken. At least for now.
When they were safe, truly safe — maybe things would be different then. Polaris steeled himself with a deep breath, holding to that thought, and led Peridot to the place he'd found. They would follow the same routine they'd kept night after night: he would hunt for her in the faint light of dusk, and then they would sleep through the darkest hours of the night.
The moment the sun began to brighten the horizon, they would be on their way again. Still running, though neither of them admitted it.
