He found her eventually, resting on the least comfortable surface available in the entire forest. Sam liked a good patch of moss, or even a flattened nest of ferns. Oh – or that tangle of roots near that one tree that felt like being cradled by an old god. Strange, how the forest had become home despite being a hotbed of supernatural danger.
Sam shuffled closer. If she could hear him, she pretended not to. What a strange-looking wolf she was, Sam thought, watching his friend's side rise and fall. Had she ever seen herself? Or been given a description? Sam did not know if she had ever been able to see. Didn’t even know her real name, come to think of it.
With so much of his brain occupied by thoughts, there was not enough processing power left to keep the farts in check. Before he could make a decision either way, his rear released a long, squeaky toot.
It set the tone for the winter months, which Sam and Ghost would spend huddled together in the dark forest.
