All Welcome
the first thing mahler had done upon being accepted by wylla was tour himself around the coastal territory. it was a rather cheerless place, he had thought at first. but wintertime had birthed grey and cold into the air; the man knew he was not being as objective as he was able. grimnismal — he willed it to come alive when sunlight warmed the sands and shoals.
at mid-morning, the musiker paced the shores, listening to the colorless lap of water upon the beach. the brine still stung him a bit, though not as before; mahler suspected he would soon be used to it. when the waves drew back, he stepped gingerly onto the soaked sand, head tilting to one side as he spotted an odd rock half-buried there.
the sea returned and splashed against his muzzle as he drew the thing from its resting place and carried it to drier climes — mahler was quiet in his investigation: a triangular black rock, long-pointed on one end. a shark's tooth, though the man did not know the name for whatever seabeast had lost its weapon.

When on the beach, Nyx was always on the lookout for colourful stones. She had claimed Reef's first gift of seaglass for herself, and although she'd yet to find any other rocks by herself in the time following, she was always hopeful. Her yellow eyes scoured the sands when the tide drew out, and she allowed the waves to lap at her limbs and underbelly without letting the biting cold interrupt her search.

When a rogue droplet of sea water found its way into her ear, the tawny Ostrega paused only to vigorously shake her sodden crown. Flicking her tongue over her lips, she blinked up to spot an ashen figure some distance ahead. She stared coolly at who she assumed to be Wylla at first, wondering if she would be worth her while trying to reconnect with her volatile leader, or if she should save her dignity and turn away before she was seen.

Reluctantly, she chose option one. Nyx wanted to maintain a good relationship with her pack-mates, and knew it would be beneficial if she could build a bond with the young Alpha. Carefully, the sable-tipped wolfess moved through the surf to step onto sand yet untouched by the sea's frothy reach. She jogged toward her comrade, mentally preparing herself that Wylla may still be in a pissy mood with her, but her woes were swept away in an instant when she halted to watch her mottled comrade turn toward dry land and caught a glimpse of his distinctly masculine features.

Okay, so did the boys have another brother that they'd failed to mention? Curious, the agouti's ears pricked forward and she drew closer and noted with interest that the stranger clutched something between his teeth. "What've you found?" Nyx asked, rather enthusiastically. Is it red? I can has?

ingram had been trying to fish -- but without arille or chusi, his enjoyment was whittled to nothing and his success was nonexistent. after a particularly embarrassing failed attempt the luschyon boy threw his head in the sky in exasperation and quickly set his sights on some other task that would not frustrate or drain his spirits so keenly.

he had only strolled for a few minutes down the beach when he saw ahead of him nyx and wylla fixated on something -- or at least, he thought it was wylla. he flounced in with a large grin that practically flatlined when he saw that wylla was not wylla -- throwing in the brakes, he apprised the male with a slackjawed expression and uttered: "whoa."

mahler, despite his maturity, was still somehow naively unaware that pack-life consisted of several thousand interactions with one's fellows. he found this a flaw in an otherwise smoothly running series of processes, in wolfkind as a whole, truly, and his annoyance was stark when he turned his dark visage toward the sylph suddenly at his heel.
she was gold-burnished atop her rich chestnut hues; she irritated him with her open beauty and bold approach, but the scrooge was resigned to this meet, and swept back his ears in pale imitation of what he thought to be subservience. before he could greet her in his monosyllabic way, the presence of another caught the musiker's eye; a male youth, inky save for the shimmer of moonlight along his hackles, long-legged and open-mouthed.
deciding there was music here after all, due to the odd pleasantry of their faces, mahler lay down the tooth upon the sand so that they could both see it. presently, the man glanced toward the sea, then trailed his cool gaze between the expressions of the — presumably — younger wolves.

The monochrome male regarded her without words, his unusual lilac eyes lingering on her with something that resembled frustration as she poked her nose carelessly into his business. Grimnismal wolves were known for their prickliness and Nyx didn't particularly care that she might be an annoyance; she had Ingram and Lycaon to rely on for companionship.

She did not register the arrival of another until her newest acquaintance looked over her shoulder and across the strand, which roused enough curiosity for Nyx' own gaze to follow. She looked briefly to her silver-tipped comrade as he stared at them from a distance, but promptly returned her attention to the wolf whose name she did not yet know. Her tail lashed the air at her rear with excitement as he lowered his head to place the pointed object on the sand and, with wide-eyed wonder, the golden wolfess dipped her own muzzle to study its serrated edges. "What is it?"

while nyx was busy thrusting her nose comically in mahler's business, ingram was still recollecting from the surprise of seeing his sister in male form. damn -- the mask looked good on him -- ingram had always thought wylla had a commanding presence, and it was no different in masculine stature.

at length he managed to find words, though it was a struggle -- his throat bobbed a few times and he squinted, just checking under the hood to make sure wylla hadn't suddenly just put on a few pounds and a few inches. the petrified shark's tooth held not even an ounce of his attention as he finally stirred and got closer. "you... you look like wylla." he announced suddenly, unaware it was kind of a 'well duh' statement.

the girl dipped her delicate muzzle to inspect the tooth; the boy continued to stare, and there grew in mahler the distinct possibility he was being evaluated in a way to which he had not consented. however, steeling himself from becoming abristle with distaste, mahler instead swept his ears forward and did not pause in his rejoinder: "truly?" whether the somehow shocked yearling received this as truth or sardony made no difference to the musiker.
to the wolfess he returned the brunt of his grim interest, if only to inspect more closely the melded hues of her silken coat — she was all gossamer and soft tones, lovely but unsuitable for his amorphous tastes. mahler did not pause to ponder if such a man as he possessed the authority to pass such judgements, answering in his gruff accent, "a shark's tooth."
