@Queenie's due date was approaching; that much was obvious, and it made Alarian undeniably nervous. He wondered if she would take him up on his offers— to Delight, and to her. He wondered if he was up to the first offer, exactly. The last time had been a mess— worse than a mess. He had lost a friend that day— and, over the following days, each new life she had died to bring into the world.
He couldn't do that to Delight. Because honestly, he was the only one at Bracken Sanctuary who was really... attached to Queenie, it seemed. Selfish as Alarian was, that was enough— enough that he cared about the woman too, whatever misgivings he had about her.
And the pups didn't exactly deserve to die, either. So, reluctantly, he went off looking for her. He had the sense to stop and catch something for her, luckily— some kind of... weird-looking weasel thing. It seemed edible enough. Alarian headed to where he thought her den was— and when he arrived, lingered awkwardly outside of it, chuffing to announce his presence. Got a minute? He called softly; hopefully, only a minute. All he needed to do was ask her some things, clarify some things, beg her not to die in labor and be on his way.

Everytime one of the pups kicked or punched (or whatever fetuses do), Queenie jumped up, afraid that this might be the first of many contractions. There was a lot of commotion within the den, what, with her constant fright and anxiety, so she was visibly on edge. Upon hearing Alarian's chuff, she was initially defensive, but relaxed once she saw him — and the food! You're a life-saver, she sighed as she took the limp weasel-thing from him and began to bite into it.

It was already going better than he expected; Alarian hesitated a few more beats anyway before he drew closer, still near the entrance. It's what I do, He joked nervously, referring to his role as a caregiver. Speaking of which— time to get down to business. Unfortunately. Do you know much about— birth? Pups?
Truth be told, Alarian didn't know a ton about either— more about the former than the latter. Ironically, instruction and knowledge given by his first patient. He swallowed and tried to shove that thought away. There are... things to expect. That's why I ask. Especially if this is your first litter. The last sentence was almost posed as a question.

It was foolish of Queenie to think that this interaction would have been any different from the rest. All that anyone was ever concerned about were the pups — can you feel them move? does it bother you? want some leaves? here, they're good for you — and honestly, she was getting tired of it. Never tried this before, she scoffed, motioning toward the barely touched corpse at her paws, Where'd you find it?

With a sigh, the heavily pregnant Queenie settled back onto her haunches and decided that Alarian's questions were worth addressing. It's my first, yeah. I don't know anything aside from that it's gonna hurt.
