All Welcome
"Wooooo," Ephraim whistled in a hushed voice as he circled around a white ovoid mass just outside Hougeda's yawning mouth. It was immense, the top reaching nearly up to the small coywolf's lean belly, and didn't seem to be alive. It stayed in place as he paced around it with a tentatively wagging tail, searching for some indication of its identity.

It wasn't fluffy like the moss, it wasn't alive like him, and it wasn't like a rabbit or any other kind of food he'd ever seen. The surface was pockmarked but nothing seemed to come out of, either. After several more laps around the blob, Ephraim stretched his neck forward and gently pressed his nose to it, then darted back several feet. Nothing happened. It felt soft and a little velvety, had a deep earthy scent to it unlike anything he'd ever smelled before, but didn't react to his touch. "What're you?" he asked it, but it didn't answer.

@Dalia if you're free for that naturalist thread I mentioned forever ago?

dalia had been out collecting water-soaked moss for portia. of course, her mother could do it herself, but she knew that she liked it when she brought it to her. it's just, ya know, a nice gesture. she spotted ephiraim on her way past hougeda, blinking curiously until she realized what he was doing. oh! how exciting! she hadn't seen one of this in a while-- but portia had introduced her to them when she was young.

"it's a mushroom," dalia said, catching his question to the white thing and padding over to see him, "a puffball mushroom, actually, babe." she said with a small smile. she gazed down at the pup with a gentle gaze, curious what he'd make of that. she'd only met the pup once or twice during his check ups with portia-- so she hoped he'd let her stick around. she really loved talking about the earth.

Actually, he had kind of smelled this before, hadn't he? It was reminiscent of the little bulbs along the walls inside Hougeda that he and Bat had decided were flowers, but this one was deeper and more earthy than those, which were a brighter scent, a bit watery. This was a flower too, then, he decided. Satisfied, Ephraim gave it one more look over and then made to leave, but Dalia approached and said it was something else. A mushroom.

"Hi!" he said, standing at attention as best a little coywolf could do with his tail flagging pleasantly behind him. "Whassa mushroom? Whassa poofball? Wha's it do?" Sounded like something gross, but this thing was cool, so that couldn't be right. "Issa flower?" he wondered, pleased that he could demonstrate his expertise. Bat had asked if it was a flower and they had (presumably) decided that's what it was, so he was definitely right! Dalia was gonna be so impressed.

as far as dalia was concerned, the puffball held little to no medicinal use. it could be eaten-- she thought-- though she wasn't positive, and really didn't want to tell a pup to eat something that she herself wouldn't eat. it certainly wasn't poisonous though, dalia knew that. "it's a kind of fungus," the young kru told him, giving him a gentle shrug at his assessment of it being a flower, "kind of, they're both a sort of plant."

"and a puffball is something thats... big, round, looks kind of puffy-- like this mushroom," she explained as eloquently as she could, "or you." she added the last part with a bright smile, leaning forwards to nudge ephraim playfully.

and then, giving him a gaze that suggested she had a secret, dalia said, "they don't do much-- but what they do do is pretty cool, you wanna see?"

"Fun Gus?" said Ephraim, narrowing his eyes at the white mass as he crab-walked curiously around it. "Why's it named Gus?" Maybe because it looked kind of silly, and Gus was a ridiculous name, if he did say so himself. Fun Gus was a plant, so not quite a flower, but like a tree or a bush? The boy's tail waved as he leaned in to bump his nose against it again, snorting at the velveteen texture of the portly cap on his sensitive nares.

"Hey, I'm no' round!" he protested with a chuckle, shooting Dalia a sharp look that wasn't remotely convincing. Okay, so he had a little bit of a pot belly. Nothing that a bit of exercising or an impending growth spurt couldn't cure. She offered to show him what a puffball was capable of and he pranced back a few feet, ears perked attentively as he exclaimed, "yeah!" Dalia said it had to be cool, and everyone loved cool things, so of course a little boy like him wanted to see it! He was so often subdued in the company of others, either sad or shy or both, that he didn't get to let himself get carried away like this. It was nice to just be excited for once.

christ i'm really sorry for the delay

of course, ephraim misheard her-- but all the same. "everyone deserves a name," she told him with a smile. fun gus especially earned his right to a name.

"okay," she then began, ushering him to the side with a pointed nose, "it won't hurt you-- don't be alarmed." her warning was gentle, but just a good heads up. then, dalia reared up on her hind legs and came crashing down onto the mushroom. it exploded!! kind of, the best that puffball mushrooms could do, a big white cloud fluffing up from it and filling the air of above them. dalia watched it for a second, eyes gleaming, before looking down at ephraim to see what he thought.

after seeing ephiram's reaction, which was a mix of shock and awe, dalia ushered him away from the exploded mushroom, coaxing him with the idea of a big lunch.
