All Welcome

She was home.

Actually, she had been home for some time in the most corporeal sense.  Her paws had touched the shores more than a week ago.  But it had taken her some time to get back into her usual routine, caught up instead with the grief of losing her last daughter to the Wilds.

It was different with Yakone than it had been with Nunataq and Marten.  Maybe one day her snowfurred daughter would return to Undersea.  Maybe she wouldn't.  'Io could only pray that whatever gods were out there would keep her safe.

She was doing better now.  Komodo had guided her through it more than anything.  Once it was out of her hands and off of her chest, it was a little easier to rise in the mornings and to bed at night.

Morning had come and gone and afternoon was in full swing as she trailed anxiously along the waters.  She'd still never gotten used to the sea, how it seemed to swallow and eat wolves whole, and each time a wave would get too close she would reel backwards, barking with her hackles raised.

Steelhead began to love his new home. He loved the way the closed island made it easy to keep track of who was there and who wasnt. He loved how the air always smelled of the sea and fish and sand. He loved most of all how welcoming the group was to strangers, to allow him and his brother a mutual home. Steelhead had chosen this fairly cool day to take a swim, not minding that the water was chilled a bit and made it uncomfortable. He ducked beneath the waves and came up, repeating the actions over and over until he grew tired.

The last time he popped his head over the waves, he allowed the wave to push him toward shore which unfortunately made it so he jumped from the water right into the barking face of a pretty looking woman. "Woah Whatcha so riled up for lady?" he shouted as he reeled back, ears flattened slightly as he quickly jumped to the side to avoid crashing into her. His heart beat rapidly in his chest from the shock of someone standing right there, but he took a deep breath and released it. "You okay?" he asked hesitantly, staring at her like she was nuts.

This was only further evidence that the ocean ate and spat out wolves whenever she desired.  Her hackles raised as she crashed ankle-deep into the water, teeth clashing at the retreating waves.  Once she'd successfully chased the water back to its own domain she quickly circled her packmate and sniffed him over.

He was thankfully uninjured.

Her hackles lowered but she remained alert as she moved back onto the island.  Danger.

Steelhead's eyes widened and he gawked at her as she attacked the waves, a forepaw lifted in a confused and wary manner as he considered leaving. She seemed to be seriously angry at the ocean and perhaps a little screwy in the upstairs department. Unfortunately he took too long to decide what to do and she turned to him, approaching and sniffing at him before uttering a single word. He felt a chuckle rise in his throat and smothered it before it could be released, ending up making a choked sort of noise. "Only if it's storming out or you're a pup. It's really not so bad, if you can swim" he responded with a slow wag of his tail. He studied her for a moment before realizing she was scared of the ocean. It must suck to call a place home that was surrounded by something you weren't sure of. "I promise the waves won't hurt you." he said with a slight smile.

She squinted at his explanation.  She had seen the ocean spit out many adults on Undersea's shore, and she was certain not all of them had been caught out in a storm.  Certainly, they weren't all pups.  Reigi could swim but she wouldn't call herself adept; she much preferred to avoid the dangers of the ocean.

Many wolf come from ocean, all adults.  She licks the brine off of her muzzle.  Be wary.

Steelhead considered her words, it took him a moment to fully grasp what she was saying. The ocean here tended to wash up wolves. He gave a low hum and nodded thoughtfully "Certain parts of the ocean are more rough then others" he said admitting it. "If you stay close to shore, where your paws touch bottom then it is much safer" he explained wondering if the explanation would help. "Once your paws start leaving the sand, if you aren't a really good swimmer, then the ocean will drag you out" he studied her before looking out toward the horizon, ears flicking.

She looked upon him with a scrutinizing gaze and offered at first nothing but a snort at his words.  The waves came rolling back onto shore and her sharpened, two-toned glare turned to them, and then back at Steelhead.  She let out a slow, metered sigh and took a few tentative steps towards the water before she turned back to her packmate.  Show.
