@Bat and tegan hadn't found much of anything. if there was any sort of trail, it was stale and certainly not from ceara's most recent scouting trip. tegan was becoming increasingly frustrated, especially since he was growing worried and on top of all this-- he was supposed to be teaching. he didn't have fucking time to be teaching, he needed to find his aunt.

he kept trying to think of lil tidbits to tell her, but tegan was too focused on this mission to properly think about it. brow furrowed, tegan muttered. "we're looking for scents-- or blood or... fuck, there's literally nothing," he stopped in his tracks, tail lashing suddenly behind him, "she didn't go this way, we would've found something stronger." maybe she went southwest, and not southeast. god damn it.

tegan looked to bat, brows furrowing. he was about to suggest that they try the west, but a shadow danced over him, forcing him to look up. X. tegan was surprised, but a little relieved. if X had come and found them this early on, it meant he found something. the bird swooped, landing before the pair and dropping before him a tuft of fire-red fur. his brow furrowed, though he knew it wasn't necessarily bad news. their winter coats were growing in by now.

"she's north," was all tegan said, and the bird cawed, wings flapping. fucking phenomenal. they needed to travel north. at least, tegan thought, this meant they would have a trail to follow.

She took to tracking like a fish—or, you might say, a Bat—to water. She employed every available sense to eagerly comb their surroundings for any sign of Ceara. Much of the time, she kept her nose within an inch of the ground, skimming as she sniffed searchingly. But any scent trails they did find soon grew cold and then Bat developed a pretty bad crick in her neck. After that, she kept her eyes peeled and her ears up, nose twitching as she occasionally drew in whatever odors she could pick up on the wind.

Bat sensed Tegan's growing frustration as time wore on and their feet grew sore. But then the brisk October air delivered something even better than a scent: a now familiar hawk descended right in front of the pair of wolves. The juvenile huffed in surprise, though she recovered quickly and blinked curiously as her mentor fetched a snatch of red fur from X's beak. Bat wasn't even a proper scout yet and she knew what this meant.

She bobbed her head—over-sized ears flopping wantonly—and prepared to follow behind X and Tegan. This involved Bat spinning 180° so that her snoot and toes now pointed north.

He is restless. The golden prince has come two or three times to their meeting place but has found no sign of Ceara. Hadn't she wanted to meet again soon? Her scent is stale by the falls; the last time she visited was likely their previous tete-a-tete. Llewellyn sniffs around for a long while before heading down into the forest. She was guarding borders to the west when he had first ran into her; perhaps it would be best to go that way.

A bird of prey flying overhead draws his attention, and it is not long before he stumbles upon the two wolves, one light gray, one dark. A master and apprentice, it seems, and Llewellyn chuffs at them as he approaches, keeping his body language neutral and nonthreatening. There is something to their scent that reminds him of Ceara--packmates? And the bird is with them, now. Strange.

"Bore da," he says, casting a wary look at the hawk. "I am looking for a friend of mine who lives over yonder," the prince explains, tipping his muzzle to the west--or, at least, what he thinks is west in this tangle of a wood. "Ceara. Red-furred. Has she been around here lately?" He does not notice, yet, the tuft of ruddy hairs that the pair has in possession.

tegan was so focused on the damn bird and fire that he hadn't heard the male approach. and so he was taken by surprise. he turned, ears forward and fur bristling. "what do you want with her?" he asked, stepping in front of bat rather defensively and impulsively. it took him a few moments of glaring and processing before he realized he was kind of being an ass.

"sorry-- dude-- uh, she's missing. we're a search party," he restarted, motioning to the bird and relaxing his posture, "X found her fur up north, we're about to turn that way." he thought that was a better start. he rolled his shoulders and glanced to bat. "this is rory, i'm tegan, ceara's nephew."

She found herself suddenly peering at the figure of a golden wolf even as he padded closer and addressed herself and Tegan. Bat blinked, transfixed by the color of his pelt. When he said Ceara's name, it jolted her right out of her brief reverie. She shot a glance at Tegan, who had moved in between Bat and the stranger. He seemed pretty defensive at first, though the mention of Ceara's name seemed to have an effect on him too. He relaxed.

"Hi," she offered simply when her mentor introduced her. She blinked her silver eyes, then asked, "You're looking for Ceara too?" He'd said as much and Tegan had accepted it at face value. But Bat couldn't help thinking, What are the odds? She was a little suspicious. Had he overheard them—and seen the exchange with X—and then approached them to act as if he knew Ceara too? But why would he do that?

"Who are you?" she wondered, a very slight emphasis on the "are" but not quite enough of one to slap italics on it. Even as the question left Bat's mouth, she abruptly realized that he'd said Ceara's name, yet they hadn't mentioned it. So he did know her. Following Tegan's example, Bat relaxed slightly, though her gaze still burned with curiosity.

The older of the two is reactive, and Llewellyn feels his own lips curling in a snarl at the bristling shown him. Things calm down, though, and the prince forces himself to hear past the blood pounding in his ears, to the things the boy says to him. He nods at the girl's question, glancing at the hawk once more before turning to the wolves.

"As I said, Ceara is a friend," he says coolly. "My name is Llewellyn; I am from Moonspear. Ceara and I were going to meet here a few days ago, but she never turned up. So she is missing?" An uncomfortable feeling begins to burn in his chest. What if his impulsiveness had led to her getting hurt--or worse? What if she had taken matters into her own paws and it had gone terribly wrong?

"Is Blackfeather Woods to the north?" Llewellyn asks, trying to keep his face impassive. "She told me about the war between your packs. And just the other day, she was attacked by one of their wolves--for personal reasons, she explained. . .but given their history. . ." He trails off delicately, mouth stretching in a tight frown. Had the girl come back to finish the job?

"did tegan know that? answer-- i don't know. this remains in character.

"fuck-- are you serious?" he asked, completely fucked sideways by this incredibly coincidental encounter. FUCK. blackfeather woods. fuck. was that where she was? "ah-- fuck-- thanks for the intel, i gotta go to blackfeather and see-- now-- fuck," he began to ramble with a few heavy shakes of his head.

"rory you-- should still go north. X will go with, you can see if maybe she's actually up there. i'm gonna cut through the mountains and check out blackfeather-- no way am i going the long way if there's a chance she's there," he said with certainty, his voice gaining it's composure back. his brows furrowed. "no buts, seriously, i'm not letting you go there," he added sternly. ew, stern tegan was not fun to write. but maybe it was attractive, or something. i don't know.

he looked back to llewellyn, gaze still firm. "sorry, i can't keep chit chatting, i gotta go to blackfeather."

Although the mention of Blackfeather would likely trigger many Redhawks, it meant nothing to Bat. The question seemed to come out of left field, though Llewellyn quickly made the connection. Bat's eyes widened. They were part of a war? And Ceara had been attacked?

Swearing was certainly not out of character for Tegan, though the sheer amount of "fucks" that dropped from his mouth in response made Bat's heart rate ratchet up a few notches. How had nobody mentioned this war to her? She had so many questions!

But now Tegan was telling her to follow their original plan—follow X north—while he went to check on this lead in Blackfeather Woods. "But—!" she tried to argue, only for him to talk right over her, insistent. The unusual seriousness of his demeanor kept her mouth shut.

Tegan's reaction does not at all make him feel better about the situation. Naturally, it lines up with the history he has been given. . .but, still, it is jarring. Things move rather quickly after the revelation, with the elder boy sending the girl to scout north; he will take a more direct path. Llewellyn shakes his head as Tegan apologizes, understanding. But--

"I will go with you," he responds, his tone firm. "Ceara and I have spoken much about Blackfeather; if they are continuing to take captives, they are a threat. I will not live with that threat right under my nose." He does not know whether Tegan intends to snuff out this threat, or merely inquire at the borders. Nevertheless, he will go. He cares not whether he has to dive into the belly of the beast to drag Ceara out, if that is what it takes.

"It will be good to have backup," Llewellyn reasons, giving Tegan the faintest of smiles.
