his friend has flown off somewhere, perhaps exploring or searching for food, and inexplicably he feels lonely. it makes no sense to him; tack is almost always near, keeping him company much of the time, and what use does he have for other wolves anyway? he can't speak, and sometimes it seems an impossible barrier to breach. not least because there are no fewer thoughts swimming around in his head than before, begging to be released somehow.
in his angst, he fails to pay as much attention as he probably ought to, and the consequences come swiftly. he stumbles briefly over a rock — a minor error, but unfortunately not the end of it. he puts a foreleg out to steady himself, and his paw slips over the uneven terrain, twisting painfully as he stumbles again. all his weight shifts onto that paw for a second, jammed into an awkward position against another rock, and a yelp slips from the golden mayfair. he's quick to yank his paw away, holding it in the air and sucking in a deep, shaking breath. pain lances through his paw and up his leg. it can't be broken, he thinks, but he's certainly injured himself. a low, breathy whine accompanies his next exhale, and he's still for a few moments, contemplating his next move.

Gundham sauntered along, wanting to move further inland for the coming winter. Unfortunately, with the way he was traveling, he'd have to cross a ravine to continue. He'd managed to find a way down with careful footing and now traveled on its floor. At a warmer time of year, he was sure there would be insects and amphibians aplenty; but the place was drearily devoid of life, now.

Except for another wolf, apparently, who he noticed up ahead. His heart rate instinctively picked up not out of a sense of danger but because he loathed the thought of confrontation so strongly. He had to pass him, so Gundham sucked in a breath and continued on while pretending he didn't exist. He'd mostly tuned out the other wolf's presence — until he tripped and stumbled awfully, sucking in a breath from the pain. The man was holding his leg up. It didn't look broken, but he could've damaged it some other way.

He swallowed. Tempted as he was to just keep moving on his way and mind his own business, it didn't feel right to not ask if he was alright, at the very least. That was less awkward, anyway. Willing himself to speak, Gundham asked, A-Are you injured? His voice was hoarse, for he seldom used it now. If the man needed medical assistance, he wouldn't be much help — Gundham lacked medical experience and didn't know anyone who did. He hardly knew anyone in these wilds period. Still, it felt right to ask.

he hadn't noticed the presence of another wolf, so his question startles him. he flinches, ears flattening, and instinctively lowers himself to the ground, belly just barely brushing the uneven earth below him. his injured paw rests gingerly on the ground, tail sweeping against his body for a moment. the response is too automatic to control, but as his gaze finds the stranger and he realizes there's nothing obviously intimidating about him, the tension leaves him. he swallows hard, finally processing the question, and nods slowly. for a moment muscle memory takes over and some subconscious part of him forgets that — well, that he hasn't got a tongue. he opens his mouth to say something, to thank the stranger for his concern maybe, and struggles for only a second before the realization strikes him and he closes his mouth quickly, eyes and ears heating with shame. he swallows again, fighting back tears now; his leg hurts and he feels so alone, and he can't even tell anyone.

Good to know they're both anxious messes, lmfao. Match made in heaven.

The other man's sudden movements cause him to jolt instinctively, ready to run if he did anything crazy. But it seemed the stranger was just as fearful as him — if not more, for he dropped to a crouch, belly almost flat on the ground. The wolves' eyes met, and the tension dissipated. Gundham almost wanted to laugh at the coincidence of finding someone just as fearful as he was. It quelled his anxiety, finding comfort in that parallel. The stranged finally nodded at his question. He opened his mouth to speak, but as if unable, no words came forth. Gundham swore he didn't see a tongue in his mouth, but that was absurd, so he figured his eyes had seen wrong. The stranger probably just struggled with words as he often did.

The man appeared distraught, then. Gundham really didn't know what he could do to help but felt inclined to try, anyway. I can't fix your leg, but maybe it will heal itself. Can you walk? Maybe we could find someplace for you to rest, He said, voice becoming stronger from both gained confidence and further use. Gundham remained where he was for now. While he wanted to help, he was still highly uncomfortable with even the prospect of being touched.
