The herd did not stop moving for long. They were heading west until the hills descended to layers of shale and exposed bedrock, and then their trail led north. The wolf pursued them. They left many signs of their presence that he found and investigated—mostly droppings, some still steaming.

As the wolf descended and cut across the moraine, he found the landscape more difficult to traverse than he'd like to admit; the bonus of being alone, then, was that he need not account for every decision he made. But he was irked all the same as he struggled across the narrow crosscurrents set in the stone. The herd would not head for the coast unless it was absolutely necessary—and when he noticed their path cleaving north through the ice and snow, he felt vindicated in his assumption.

The wolf turned north, and silently crept after them.
