Pack Activity

Their hunting trip had been unsuccessful. The resident herd had not been anywhere close to the plateau today, and so now they were on their way home with nothing to show for the time they had spent looking for food. He continued to worry about whether or not they would make it through the winter with their low numbers. He was just thankful that they had plenty of food stored away to carry them through to the spring.

As they came to the borders, the scent of coyote was thick in the air. Kavik came to a stop just at the threshold of the plateau, turning to look at Ruenna, a mixture of worry and anger on his face. Without any further hesitation, he moved forward into the territory. He stopped again as he came upon the remains of one of their caches; it was ripped open and most of the food was gone apart from the random pieces of carcass dotting the snow-covered ground around them. His anger deepened, jaw clenching as he wondered what else the coyotes had been up to. Moving again, he made his way to the next closest cache, finding it to be in the same condition as the first one. The third and fourth caches were in the same state, and dread began to settle in his chest. He was almost vibrating with rage as he looked to his beta. How could they have cleared out all of our food? he asked through clenched teeth. Then, he was struck with a flash of panic--Liri. What if they had made it to the dens. I have to go check on Liri, he said quickly and took off towards the door without another word.

I figured we could all split up from here and I'll leave it to you guys if you want to find a straggler to fight with. Kavik is going to find one at the den after he realizes Liri is gone.

I love you guys so much! It has been fun!! <3

The pack's numbers have truly dwindled, and she can't help but find their hunting party a little abysmal — it's really no wonder the whole thing was a failure, though bad luck surely had something to do with it too. Either way, she's eager to get back to the territory and forget the whole mess. As they reach the borders, though, it becomes apparent their run of bad luck isn't over — far from it. Her stomach clenches and twists at the scent of coyote, though she maintains the mask of apathy she'd adopted for her own sanity halfway through the hunting trip. She follows Kavik's lead for several caches, breaking off eventually without a word to check some on her own.
It might occur to her later that this was her first mistake, but now all she can think about is the burning, writhing hatred making its home in her chest. She doesn't think she'll find any of them, but irrationally she wants to — or she thinks she does. Her heart flips when she finally catches the fresh scent of coyote deeper in the territory, breath catching harshly in her throat as her silent wish is answered in the form of two fast-moving, sandy-coated figures. She snarls, willing her limbs to move, but the command goes unheeded and she finds herself frozen. All she can do is flinch as the first coyote lunges for her face, heart racing.

Heavy pants creased his lungs as the surge of adrenaline had come and gone in the beast. The simmer of navy cascaded across the bulk of his hide in waves as glints of sweat settled across him. He had given his best, and still it wasn’t enough. They had so few members, how could they? How could they even in the slightest have enough luck to even manage a deer? Even the wounded evaded them - this spoke volumes to the bastard.
They were truly in bad shape.

Returning to the Plateau, Siq couldn’t help but gag on the extreme stench of Coyote permeating their lands. Their lands, and the garbage came to be where they didn’t belong. However, where garbage came and ransacked, litter of carnage lay all about them. Months of hard work hunting and scavenging were scattered and strewed between trees and rock columns. It shook the entirety of the group it seemed, as all stopped in either surprise, sadness, or a furious cocktail of both.

Siqsa himself felt a whirlpool of inferno brindle and entomb his insides, scalding his ribs with indignation and wrath that peasant filth would dare balls up to such a degree.

Sudas nazasasi,” the curse left his lips with a rumble of hellish loathe. The severity of the situation was confirmed as Kavik had flown off so quickly that Siqsa couldn’t catch anything out of the dark Alpha’s maw other than ‘Liri’. Noises were still heard in the Plateau and the Wolfdog knew he couldn’t just let more of the moronic coyotes come after them - they were small enough as a group as it was.
Shit.

I’m staying with you,” he told Ruenna, spiritually in debt to her for her healing of him. He didn’t explain why, but it was moreso for her protection than his. He had gotten close enough to the Void to know there was nothing to fear... but he felt it wasn’t Rue’s time yet. She had so much potential... much more than his useless ass, anyways. Skull forever downcast, he busied himself looking for both a fresher trail and ears stayed alert for anything that jostled before they did.

Minori, Issun, and Takara had gone, and in their place a wild band of coyotes had appeared. This was certainly no coincidence; the coyotes could smell the weakening border. They knew that there were fewer Plateau wolves here to guard the stores, which had been placed and packed with a far larger pack in mind. The coyotes had been testing their limits lately, but Rue had never imagined this. She had been certain that the territory would be fine for a few hours while they hunted-- they had left @Covus behind after all, and Liri's scent still lingered by her den.

Rue's eyes met Kavik's knowlingly as they came upon the first cache, and her heart dropped further and further into her stomach with each ransacked cache they found. Alessia peeled away, presumably to check on.. whatever it was she cared about. Kavik turned to Rue with a angry question, one that felt rhetorical but Rue answered anyway. "Numbers," she murmured, voice cracking with emotion. Sheer numbers, it had to have been. There must be a lot more coyotes here than they had originally thought, for the raiders to make such short work of all of their caches. All that was left behind were bones, furs and the obviously rotten pieces, tossed and strewn haphazardly about the territory--  the coyotes had not only decimated their livilhood, but had enjoyed themselves immensely while doing so.

As it became clear that the coyotes had ventured deeply into their territory, Kavik became understandaly worried about Liri. He disappeared, and with him the last of Rue's bravery. Siqsa voiced his intention to stay with her, and gratitude filled her expression in the small moment before she buried her face in his scruff. She took a few steadying breaths, then lifted her head once more. "We should check the Door," Rue suggested, voice trembling as she fought off tears. The Door was at the heart of their territory-- if the coyote raiders had cleaned out the Door, then they were truly destitute.

He didn’t hide his surprise as she brought the slender face into his shoulder’s blades. Because, well, he wasn’t used to physical appreciation. He hadn’t ever gotten any. And with him showing his own to her by staying with her, it had caught his attention that there was sadness that came with this gesture. The Coyotes has made her sad, her words just as heartbroken as Arana’s had when she missed her home.

There was was some strange correlation between the quicksilver and the golden girls and Siqsa didn’t know what to even make of it. Nor the feelings of regret of how he treated his ‘sister’ as he had abused her so much. But even with the similarities, he couldn’t see himself doing the same things he had to Rue as he had to Arana. So as she showed her gratitude, instead of his prior world style of snapping at her to redeem his personal space and ward off weakness, to stood there, and allowed her to express herself as she desired against him. It saved energy, as it took enough to simply exist let alone to be angry all the time. But this? This was nice.

Slopped neck or not, as she pulled away, his peripherals and auds followed her sounds. Garnet irises stayed across the petite limbs as she made the suggestion of their next move. He remained silent, bobbing his head as an affirmation of her suggestion. He wasn’t going anywhere unless it was with her. As they started their voyage, he kept pace with her, the sway of his weight giving the impression of his readsiness to do some damage to any who stood between them.

Kavik sprinted inside the door, inky paws carrying him through the tunnels and to the den @Liri had been keeping herself locked away in. He knew the path of tunnels well, as he had taken to sleeping near her a night, unable to sleep alone in their den anymore. Her quarantine site was far in the back away from anyone else, so it took him a few minutes to get there even at the pace he was moving. He came to a skidding halt in front of the open den, dread filling his chest and making it hard for him to breath. He didn't need to go into the den to see that his mate was gone. Turning, he sprinted back towards the opening to the door--he had to find her.

As he came barreling out of the door, his attention was drawn to a flash of sandy fur. He came to a stop, eyes locking on the coyote fleeing through the trees in front of him. A burning rage settled over the alpha then, and he lunged forward, sprinting and throwing himself into the side of the intruder. With a yelp, it fell to the ground and disappeared under his large, inky form. Kavik wasted no time sinking his teeth into whatever he could find--a leg. He threw his head back and forth until he ripped the creature's appendage from its body, not even registering the bite it had dealt to his face. Then his jaws found the bastard's neck, and he bit down hard, blood filing his mouth and spilling to the ground at Kavik's feet. He knew he needed to do no more--the coyote would be dead soon, but grief and rage urged him to rip and tear, and he shook his head violently until his mouthful of flesh and trachea was pulled from the already very dead beast.

Kavik took a few steps back, dropping the chunk of coyote from his mouth, chest rising and falling quickly as he tried to find his way back to some kind of rational thinking. He needed to make sure everyone else was okay; they had all been separated, and he needed to make sure no one else went missing. He sniffed around, searching for Liri's scent but for some reason, he couldn't find it anywhere. She couldn't have gone far, and he held on to the hope that he would also find her. They would all be fine, he tried to tell himself, but the dread was starting to replace the rage that had started to dull with each breath he drew into his lungs, and it was whispering in his ear that none of this would be okay.

Rue thought she might have felt felt Siqsa start when she leaned against him, but he didn't pull away. After a short moment the beta was able to collect herself and continue onward.

As the pair neared the Door, the sounds of a struggle met Rue's ears. She sucked in a quick breath, eyes darting to Siqsa. Was it Corvus, perhaps? The sounds of the struggle faded quickly to silence, but Rue wasn't sure that was necessarily a good thing. She loped toward the Door, only to stop in her tracks as she came upon Kavik and was was left of his opponent.

"Is Liri okay?" she inquired of Kavik hopefully, the near-desperation in her voice and eyes begging for good news.

He remained just on the right flank of Rue until they closed the distance between them and the Door. Once they heard the scuffle however, he broadened his steps to be ahead of her, ready to throw himself into another fight should something head their way from there. But the fight was over extremely quick, and a puzzled Siqsa returned the glance to the quicksilver. What the hell?

Kavik stepped out from the noise-range, suave body covered in both the scents of blood and the musk of coyote. Tufts of fur both his and not lay flared up and misplaced, and it was obvious what had happened. But what mattered was Kavik was victorious.

But in a way, the Alpha wasn’t. Garnets came across those dulling emeralds of the man he sorta began looking up to, and Siq already knew. They were fucked. “She ain’t with them,” he blurted out with a deepening scour of baritones. “You said it yourself; she’s loyal. If she’s okay, she’ll come back to you.” She couldn’t be dead, could she? Couldn’t be.

Ruenna's question pulled him from his rage-driven trance, and his gaze briefly rested on her face before his eyes closed in response to the flash of pain squeezing his chest. Luckily Siqsa answered the question for him, and he drew in a few more breaths before finally standing up straight, an unreadable mask taking over his face. He had wolves to protect. He looked between the silver beta and the dark man. I need you two to start searching the mountain pass north of here and then wait for me. I'm going to search near the river. His tone was steady, that of an alpha taking charge of a terrible situation because there was no other way; there just wasn't time right now to give into his dread. If I don't meet you there in a days time, continue on without me and find somewhere safe, he instructed. He would feel better knowing they were together, although he had no doubts both wolves could take care of themselves on their own. He studied them impassively as he waited for their acceptance of denial of the plan.

Siqsa's mind seemed to be moving just a little faster than Rue's, whose thoughts were drowned in confusion, worry, and the increasing realization that the pack was no longer safe within the borders they called home. They would have to leave, at least for now... there seemed to be no other choice, seeing as their ranks were too thin to fight off the bulk of the coyote invasion. But where would they go? How would they make it through winter without territory? And also... how would their now-missing members find them again, if they were not here?

Rue did not want to think for herself right now. She did not want to have to make the hard decisions. So she simply gave a weary nod to Kavik's plan. After a short moment of quiet despair, understanding finally lit in her expression. "Liri could have tried to escape through the pass... Corvus too. I.. I'm sure we'll find them there." After tossing a short glance to Siqsa to ascertain that he was following, Rue loped off for the mountain pass.

Siq listened to Kavik, knowing how much the pain had come to settle in the base of his throat. He could hear it, and it sounded just as Arana’s had the day he left her before that woman Indra and her pup. He had watched, but as he had, he had left her and she was desperate. This situation was similar...

but the difference was him being incapable of simply leaving Kavik, or Ruenna. He’d have to be here to make sure Kavik was safe. But first, checking the mountain pass, as instructed. Ruenna hosted her own flurry or emotions, and giving a knowing glance to the quicksilver, he bobbed his low dome at Kavik before keeping close to Ruenna as she began to move. They had to figure out something fast...

or or whatever was plaguing the Plateau was gonna off them too...

one at a time.

He hoped the pair found their missing packmates, but he tried not to let the alternative sink in too much--it was a downward spiral he wasn't sure he would be able to climb out of very quickly, and he just couldn't fall apart right now. He watched the two take off towards the northern part of the plateau, silent and frozen for a few moments before finally turning and heading towards the river to the south. Eyes forward and fighting to keep his mind blank, he sped through the trees, trying not to focus too much on the disaster that was now his fallen kingdom.
