All Welcome
Luckily birth was the only traumatic event in Elfie's life and by the evening he had forgotten all about the unpleasant ordeal and was concerned with eating, sleeping, being warm and protesting loudly, when one of the three were missing. Or when his stomach and intestines threw a tantrum, causing colics, gass build-up (and frequent pass-out), making the puppy to wail unconsolably for hours, until he grew exhausted and fell in restless sleep.

However, if we compare his bowel to a newly-wed couple, it had found the right music to dance to and worked in near-perfect coordination. He still was the little family's fart-and-stink-bomb, but now they came in a form of happy toots and content hiccups. Or both.

But more change was to take place on the day by the middle of his second week of life. Elfie woke up with a wide puppy yawn, wiggled his feet a bit - a little routine before another meal-time - and stopped mid-figurative-stride, because an unfamiliar sensation hit him. It was still dark around, him but the prickling, cold and wet feeling somewhere in the middle of his head was new. His eyes had finished their post-natal development and were ready for use. The only problem - he had no idea, what for.

Weejay, being the quieter of the two siblings, was often asleep during Elfie's stomach discontent -- though more than once, he had stirred her awake by squirming. If puppies at two weeks can smell, she was certainly aware of the unsavory odors Elfie tended to share with his company, and often would roll over with a groan and curl into a tiny ball to avoid said assault to her nostrils.

Today was shaping to be another day in the books of Weejay's easy, happy, trouble-free life.. only today, her brother had opened a new chapter and left Weejay behind. Not yet aware her own eyes were ready for peepin's, Weejay was only aware that Elfie had awoken. Groping about blindly in her would-be-dark world, Weejay squirmed towards him with the intent to play puppy-bowl.

There was a class-mate of mine, who used to say that it does not matter, where you wake up, what matters is that you wake up at all. I have to mention that it was said in the context of getting drunk. In Elfie's case he had woken up and realized that the world as he had known it up until then, had changed beyond recognition. He looked around with his mouth comically agape, struggling to keep his head upwards (too much stress on the feeble neck muscles) and trying to make any sense of, what was going on.

Until he spotted a slob of warm flesh and fur moving in his direction and eventually falling on his back with a flop. And the moment it happened, he became the living definition of whopee cushion and an almost musical fart escaped from his rear.

It was too bad Weejay's eyes had not opened, and that she could not see the cute, comical way that Elfie viewed his new world. She would have certainly been struck with the same sort of awe, if she had been able to see.

She used her nose to find him, homing towards him like a little furry heat-seeking missile. Once collision occured, Weejay too was knocked back, tumbling on her round sides with a quiet giggle. Too young to know of social graces and how much of a faux pax it was to fart in public, Weejay only sniffed the air and scrunched her face in response, not liking the sudden cloud of scents that stung her little nose.

Elfie, on the other hand, was busy freeing himself from under Weejay's weight, which not an easy feat. Both of them were at liberty to eat as much as they wanted from all eight milk tanks and it was no wonder that the kids grew fat, round and heavy. "EEEEEP!" Elfie squealed, squirming and wriggling to break free. "E-e-e-e-eeeeee-p!" he turned his head and yelled in his sister's face. Let me go, let me go!!!!

It turns out being yelled at directly in your new senses was not as thrilling as yelling at other people; Elfie's forceful squeaks were enough to dissuade Weejay from further tackling, though she did puppy-grumble under her breath as her hold over her squirmy sibling was vanquished.

Her vision was still fresh enough that shapes were just barely distinct, and edges blurry -- her eyes crossed as she saw something wriggle in her vision. Little did she know, this was just Elfie's tail - but a part of her brain that was basal and still very unengaged, urged her to investigate. Clambering towards Elfie with a squint across her blunt features, Weejay tried to pin the wriggly worm-tail under her fat paw, and even chew on it to see if it was edible.

Until Weejay had decided to take his tail down, Elfie had not even realized that it was there. Frankly speaking, he had not realized great many things until today and there was a whole ocean of them for him to master in the following ones. He felt his sister's weight shift and in response to this tried to turn and see, what it was that she was occupied with now. By doing this, however, he effectively interrupted the investigative process his sister was undertaking, and was left face to face with her. With a dopey and somewhat sleepy expression he stared at the blurred forms of her face, trying to wrap his mind around, what it was that he was facing. And failing.

What -- where did the worm go?! Weejay blinked rather stupidly herself, having experienced her first "being pulled a fast one". She looked up and was startled to see a face - another "first" for her as she struggled to take in the view that she was quite unaccustomed to.

"OoOOOo." Weejay puppy-muttered, losing balance in time to topple onto her hind quarters.

Eljay winced, when that blurry object began making sounds and turned his head away, as if that could shield his ears from the unwelcome noise. He let his gaze wander over the dark surroundings, but he could not make much details. Therefore he eeeped, which was a favoured word of his, and yawned mightily. His tiny brain, which was working hard on dealing with more important stuff, was unable to process everything that had happened just now. So it turned on the "Sleep" mode to save energy. What it meant was that the puppy blinked once, blinked twice and by the third blink he had dropped his head on the ground and did not care to open his eyes for the fourth time.

Like in a world famous Scarlett O'Hara quote: "After all, tomorrow is another day."

Indeed, for puppies like Elfie and Weejay, the days were innumerable -- literally. As Elfie struggled to keep the sleep faerie at bay, Weejay struggled to stay upright for different reasons. She had not quite gotten what the whole fuss was about, standing upright - it was way more fun, and rewarding, to be up close with the ground. Or on your belly.

With a flop she was sprawled across the den floor again, this time wriggling towards her (sleeping) brother. Crawling army-style on the ground took a fair bit of energy, and after a thorough puppy-growl at the dirt and stones about them, and after a few laps around her snoozing brother, Weejay too felt the pull of sleep lull her into stillness. Just.. one... more.... lap...

Snore.
