@Deku and @Orochi if you wanna pop in too!

The nights had begun to grow warmer and sleeping became easier and more pleasant. She no longer needed all the furs in her bed and had given them to Deku and her angry little second son as she had begun to see him as. This night was a special one though, as the first fireflies had begun to come out and blink in patterns lighting up the air outside their den. "Deku, Orochi, come outside, look!" she encouraged in a warm tone, nudging the both of them and standing up, walking outside. The air was filled with the blinking bugs, creating a beautiful spectacle and one she knew Deku would enjoy. She wasn't so sure of Orochi but she hoped he would at least be less grumpy than usual.

the sound of his name from outside had pulled the young boy from the thoughts that had so easily swept him away. he was imagining again, as he often did when he was left alone. there were so many things that his mind could conjure up. he’d thought of the heavens and of what it would have been like to fly up to them and swim among the clouds. he’d thought of what that would transition to when night fell, and he wondered to himself if it was at all possible to catch a star between his teeth the same way that his father caught them prey.

when he heard his name being called, deku raced outside and looked to his mother with a smile and a wagging tail. once there, the boy was mesmerized with the sight that was taking place. all around the den site there seemed to be bobbing lights. he followed them in stunned silence for a long while before he turned his gaze to his mother and breathed a soft sigh. something in the weight of it seemed as though he was grateful for that moment.

“dem stars?” the boy asked her.

She slid down onto her belly as Deku came outside, sneaking a peek back at the den to check for Orochi. Not seeing the other boy she sighed and instead took in the awed expression on her baby's face. She smiled at his sigh and gave a soft laugh at the innocent question "No baby, but they're called Starbugs. They have little lights on they're butts that they use to talk to one another" she explained and then leaned in close, her voice hushed like it was a secret shared just between the two of them "Back home in Japan we called them Hōmon genki, 'Visiting spirits'. The legend says that when our ancestors notice we are lonely and need a moment of peace, or if they simply wish to visit us, that they come from the afterlife in the form of tiny floating lights" she watched as one of the fireflies floated down to land briefly on Deku's nose, adding to the atmosphere of the story.

orochi stuck close to his mother every moment she was present. he didn’t like socializing with the roomates. he didn’t like them at all really. the big one was so annoying. she always insisted on playing with him, cleaning him, all that junk. he had his own mother for that, thank you very much! and the little one was just strange. he was always staring at something. it was kind of off putting. orochi didn’t see the purpose in such in depth evaluation.

he was sound asleep, lost in his dreams but a nudge ripped them from him. ah shit, here we go again. this lady just wouldn’t leave him alone for five seconds. orochi jumped up and glared at the two. ah, good, they were leaving. orochi plopped down again, but before he could rest his head he caught a glimpse of light. multiple lights that he’s never seen before.

the boy hopped up and stomped outside. “go!” he growled at the two. they were blocking the view. this was his terf and he deserved the best seat in the house. moving to another spot would’ve been much simpler, but orochi wasn’t a simple kid. he always preferred the extreme options and in this case it tugging on minori’s tail.

deku was intent on listening to the explanation that his mother gave him. they were not stars, but like stars, and that was enough for the young boy. he had quite an affinity for the silver sparkling things, anyway. he did not imagine it would be any different for the insects who shared such similarities. though, the explanation that had been provided did seem to be a bit odd. the young starchaser turned his head around as though he were attempting to figure out if it was possible to create the same kind of light with his own rear end. his brow was knitted comically before he glanced back to minori with a gaping jaw.

“dey’r pretty,” the boy remarked softly, lifting his muzzle upward to peer at the flickering creatures as they bobbed past him through the darkness. the moment would have been perfect had it not been for the loud sound of another child’s voice from within the den. deku turned around and latched his sights on orochi. a frown creased his dark lips and he shook his head. “no, rochi!” deku barked softly at his brother.

Minori leaned down and touched her nose to Deku's head, nuzzling him as her heart warmed. When she was around her boy all that hurt her seemed a little less terrible. "Yeah, they are" she whispered just as loud shouting and then tiny sharp fangs dug into her tail. She froze and turned around staring at Orochi as he seemed to be trying to move her by her tail. "Orochi enough!" she scolded him though there was just a bit of pride. When Deku shouted at Orochi to stop she yanked her tail free and stood up, turning to face the boy. "We invited you, my little warrior. we aren't going anywhere" she said this firmly but kindly, not being too harsh quite yet.

if scolding was what he wanted, he surely got it. orochi shot a defiant glare towards the larger wolf. he didn’t need an invitation from them. he could go where he pleased whenever he wanted and he could banish whoever got in his way. but fine, if they were keen on staying he’d go somewhere else. somewhere more quiet. a place to call his own, where he was the only one invited!

the little dragon snorted and stomped away with his tail held high. where to go... where to go. he searched high and low, but those flickering bugs were a distraction. they’d buzz in his ear, tickle his nose, be an all around pest really. he could only take so much of this onslaught. the boy snapped and lunged at one with a growl.

At his reaction she saw a glimpse of the past, a smaller version of herself showing off and asserting herself over parents as if she already owned the world. She held still and watched him stomp off, allowing him to enjoy the feeling of power before she stood to go after him. Before she did she lowered her muzzle to Deku, licking his tiny ears "Why don't you play with them? You'll find they're quite the tricksters in a game of chase" she said softly "don't go out of my sight" she added and then moved toward Orochi, watching as he took his anger out on a firefly. "They sense the dragon in you Orochi. They are only blessing it" she said this firmly but not as a reprimand. "These are the greatest warriors, leaders, healer's, and generals to have passed on" she said and as a particularly big one landed on his nose she gently nudged it off "Just tell them kindly that you do not wish to be bothered. They listen to everything" she had no idea if he was listening at the point. "If you anger them, they'll curse your fighting spirit" she warned.
