It had never been easy for Graeae to speak up. She was soft-spoken, timid and wary of consequences, but that didn't mean her thoughts weren't constantly bringing about new opinions. In fact, Graeae was notably opinionated, often times leading to discourse within her own mind.

@Naiad wasn't like her daughter...from the latter's perspective, at least. She both admired and feared her mother, having an almost unhealthy reverence for her. When decisions were made, she tended to stay quiet, but this was something that she had to speak on. It's hot. Can we find shade?

Their intentions remained the same: scout ahead and seek lands where the Marinus family might reside peacefully. They'd set out that morning to fulfill their journeys but even Naiad had to admit that it was growing too hot to bear such travel.

She nodded in response to her daughter's question, tongue lolling as she panted in an attempt to cool down. "I'd be grateful even for some water to jump into right now."

Graeae's timid gaze quickly began to fold into something more colorful. Her tail drew up into a steady wag while her eyes scanned the area around them, looking for the best place to cool down. The shore was only a few yards away and the waves looked managable, so she thought to bring up the idea to Naiad. There is, that way. They were, after all on an island.

Having already abandoned her original idea to just find shade, Graeae pranced carefully over the water's edge. Her paws danced timidly around each incoming thrust of water as she waited for her mother to join.

somehow missed that there was an island here XD

The heat must have been going to her head, she shook the cobwebs from her mind and bounded after Graeae. Her daughter hovered at the edge of the water, prancing to and fro anxiously.

Naiad raced past, calling encouragingly, "Come swim, Graeae!" She cannonballed into the shallow waves, feet pushing against the sandy bottom as she turned on her back - much like a sea otter.

"The water feels amazing," she tempted further in a sing-song tone, turning and diving beneath the waters to soak her whole body in the cool relief of the sea.

No, you didn't. I just couldn't think of the word beach asjskhd

There was a youthful quality about Naiad that Graeae envied. For a moment, she stood still, simply watching and admiring as her mother twisted about in the water. She took a few steps forward, so that she was submerged up to her knees, and gave Naiad a playful splash as she resurfaced.

Graeae took a few steps forward, this time submerging herself completely. She sat there for as long as she could manage, imagining what it might be like if she were to stay there forever.

She welcomed her daughter into the sea with laughter and a returned splash, though as the wolfdog plunged beneath the waters, Naiad sensed that the girl was reflecting and would not welcome her bouyant personality at the moment.

The seafarer paddled away, turned west, though she remained within sight of her daughter.

Drawing in a deep breath, she too allowed herself to sink beneath the surface into the peaceful aquatic world. After a moment, she blinked open coral eyes - grimacing and blinking rapidly as the salt burned her corneas.

After a time, the pain subsisted and Naiad was left to drink in the colorful, if a bit blurry, corals. Tropical fish flitted past, nipping hungrily at the living rocks and nibbling at seaweed.

Naiad drifted closer, watching the fish raptly and sharing her daughter's unspoken desire to join them.

Eventually, Graeae did have to come up for air. The girl's merle body was propelled from beneath the water's surface, leaving her fatigued legs kicking furiously to keep her above. For a moment, she panicked; Naiad had left her field of vision, seemingly leaving her child all alone. Ma? she called, spinning frantically in her search, until spotting her mother only a short ways off.

Graeae retreated slowly back to the shore, choosing to watch rather than participate in the water games any further.

Her eyes strengthened against the salt and she drifted aimlessly through the water, allowing the gentle current to pass her along as if a leaf caught in an autumn gale. After a time, her lungs began to cry for air and she was forced to surface with a gasp - blinking against the blurry ache in her optics.

She found Graeae on the shore; cocking her head in concern, the mother drifted to the wolfdog's side to nose her gently with affection. "Are you hungry?" She asked after a few quiet moments, knowing that the excursion into these lands was more taxing upon her daughter.

It was never Graeae's intention to stifle her mother's enjoyment and yet she had. Again. It seemed as though she'd made a habit out of ruining good times; why Naiad was still allowing her to follow was a mystery. In response to her mother's touch, the girl gave a childish chirp and a nod of her head. Sure, she replied sheepishly, tossing a smile toward the elder's gaze.

If there was something, anything that Graeae was even kinda good at, it was fishing. One of her secret dreams was to have a pack large enough to take down big game, like the seals that sunbathed on the shore. That surely wasn't the plan for today, but she was allowed to have hope.

Naiad smiled though inwardly her maternal concern remained. Graeae always seemed so self-conscious, so hard on herself. She could only hope that in time the wolfdog would grow into her skin and become assured with herself. For now, Naiad could only offer support.

She nudged the girl's cheek affectionately, gesturing for her daughter to follow. "What shall we try our paws at? An inland hunt or fishing perhaps?" She deferred to Graeae to lead the hunt, hoping it might bolster some confidence.

Fade out?

Something that Graeae would likely never admit was the joy she took in being handed decisions. It made her feel important, as though her opinion was something more than just her own objective thought. She side-eyed Naiad, giving the sylph a small grin as her mind ran over both options. Inland, she said, finally drawing upon a conclusion; they'd had enough water for one day.

Graeae stood excitedly and began to prance back into the wood. Y'coming? she called over her shoulder, expecting her mother to be right at her side.

ugh sorry it's short

"Wouldn't miss it," she answered with a grin, trailing after her daughter and shaking the last of the water from her pelt.
