Laurel's paws carried her through the plains and meadows that divided Easthollow from Bearclaw valley. Memories engulfed her as she walked this familiar path and thought of Lucas. Where had her baby gone? She had her newest children now but she needed him as big brother. Laurel couldn't stop herself from looking. She followed the path she had often taken except now it was the other way around; into Bearclaw valley rather than out of it.

She hadn't seen Lucas in a few days and was worried, since he had only just returned home. She wasn't quite ready to lose him again already. Laurel's ears perked as she saw him laying not far off. Lucas? she called out, her voice wavering. Was he sleeping? Had he come here for nostalgia's sake? Why were there birds sitting on him? The mother approached the body but the closer she got, the clearer it was that he wasn't there. The birds flew up with chunks of meat between their beaks and pieces of him were missing from scavengers. As she reached him she saw the dead expression on his face and the missing pieces of Lucas. My baby... she whimpered, then she collapsed by his side and pressed her nose against his cold, dead nose.

iliksis had not gone far from easthollow since he had been turned away. his sights were trained ever inward, watching the comings and goings and searching, hoping, waiting for laurel.

eventually his vigil paid off, for today none other than laurel strode from their gates; she appeared hale, but lighter -- her body was thinner from motherhood, and the man watched with a hungrily roving gaze as she made her way to some unseen destination.

he followed behind, always out of sight. her scent lead him into bearclaw, and eventually the scent of death and malaise crowded his nostrils. there, next to a sodden and sunken corpse, his darling laid -- her nose pressed up against the deceased and her voice burnt with agony.

the wraith inched closer, his dull yellow eyes watching her haunches. he cared not for the wolf she mourned -- his only aim was to get closer before becoming detected.

The coldness of Lucas' fur was terrifying in its own way. Oh, how Laurel wished she had not let him leave here alone. What had happened to him? How had he died? The scavengers had taken so much of him in the time she had been tending her babies that it was hard to tell now how he had passed away. Laurel frowned deeply as she tried to process her grief, but it was just too much to deal with altogether.

Laurel did not notice the threat that was headed her way at first; not until he was already quite close. Had she not had a troubling life she might have wanted to be alone with her grief and had ignored this other, but as things were she was instantly alert. Laurel jumped to her feet and turned to look at the stranger with an angry growl. When she realised that she stared at the man from her nightmares Laurel's expression turned into one of shock and she nearly stumbled over Lucas' corpse as she stepped backwards.

the male took one unhurried step after the next, his topline hunched and head lowered. like a panther, he prowled closer -- his quarry the grieving mother ahead.

soon he became noticed; whether by wind or by sound, it mattered not -- for laurel spun around like a cornered cat. a snarl rippled from her lips, dying there in the still air as recognition flooded her hazel gaze.

he stood upright, his head rearing above thin shoulders. the tip of his tail twitched, and a pleasurable smile swirled across his features. "hello, love." the male crooned, seemingly an inanimate shade save for the hostile glint in his eyes..

and then he sprung, desire overcoming him. it was not enough to see fear or hate: he had to feel it course through the summer warmth of her coat, and seep malignantly into her bones.

Nunataq was drawn to the scene by the unmistakeable smell of rotting flesh. And not just any odour - a canid had died here few days ago and plenty of the scavengers had had a go at the figurative shepherd's pie. She would not have recognized her brother Lucas in that mangled body and she would not have had any scruples about eating the dead wolf. Food was still food and with her hunts being less fortunate lately, she was not exactly picky about, what she was going to get.

However, as she came nearer, she picked up fresh footprints of not just one wolf, but two. With a deep-set frown on her face she tracked the two people with a growing sense of annoyance. She did realize that the Bearclaw valley as whole was too big for her to protect against intruders, but even the biggest fools had to realize that at least one, heavily marked corner with signs of "You are not welcome!" and "Beware!" everywhere, meant that they should not trespass. Even if there was a delicious and alluring corpse lying there.

By the time she reached the duo the kettle of frustration and anger was rattling and steaming loudly on the stove. She had no time to register that one of the two was her aunt Laurel, she simply picked the smallest target, who had his back turned to her. And without so much as a warning she lashed out and with bared teeth was prepared to take out a big chunk of Illiksis' butt. Nunataq had had it with the stragglers, vagabonds and plain nincompoops - this time she was prepared to butcher and scatter body parts around her reign. Let them see that she was not joking!

Hello, love.

Oh no. Oh gods, please, no!

Laurel felt tears threaten to spill. She breathed in a few quick breaths as she stumbled against Lucas' body and stoof stiffly in place. Every fibre in her body told her to run, run, RUN! Yet she found herself completely unable to move. On the inside of her mind she was just screaming the entire time, willing her to run, but she was frozen in place.

Pictures of that night evaded her mind. Of the confusion, the chaos, her face smashed into the ground, the feeling of thorough unsafety and how terrible he had made her feel. Pictures that screamed at her, he's going to do it again!

A miracle hero came in from an unexpected direction. Was that.. Nunataq? Honestly, Laurel didn't fucking care much right now. The intrusion of the new wolf was what got Laurel into motion. She dashed away as fast as she could, blinking the tears away even as she ran for her life, exiting Bearclaw Valley territory, and running away.

fading here, let me know if the PP is not okay <3

the man did not stand much chance with two wolves, and even then, nunataq's sudden, abrasive arrival had him seeking prompt exit. he would have to tail laurel another time, and vowed once he was free of this pestilent hound, that he would return and remind laurel that he was in control.

he fled, but not easily. nunataq harried him every step of the way until he was well out of bearclaw, a fact that iliksis resented given it placed him further from his desires than he wished. several times the yearling had landed harsh nips on his frame; iliksis shook them out with a sense of daggerly hatred, and made for other haunts so he might recoup and try again.
