Although Weejay came quietly, the mother saw the crestfallen look on the youngster's face. Rather than try to placate her with further words, the Sovereign struck out a paw and tickled her toes against the pup's ribs. More likely than not, this would make her laugh or at least giggle, which wasn't exactly conducive to the task at hand. But Wildfire would much rather see Weejay smile than let her go one more moment feeling like any kind of disappointment or failure.

That little frown worried Weejay’s face not a second longer as Wildfire tickled her. She crumpled instinctively around the paw in a fit of giggles. No one who possessed a soul was capable of withstanding the tickles! Weejay giggled helplessly, trying her best to wriggle out from the paw. Stoppet!! She laugh-pleaded, a new fit of giggles wracking her frame.

Managing to get away, Weejay’s gaze flashed triumphantly — but then she pounced on her mother and pressed her cold nose affectionately right in her armpit; the same tickling move would have devastated Weejay, so she expected BIG results here.
so hold nice and close the ones who get to your soul,
so that when it is cold, you wont feel so alone

A delighted laugh escaped Wildfire's smudged snout when Weejay writhed away from the tickling with a fit of giggles. They were music to the mother's ears, almost as much as when one of her kids said, "Mom!" Despite her daughter's protests, she reached for her again, only for the pup to scramble totally out of reach.

Snickering under her breath, Wildfire prepared to give chase. But then Weejay surprised her; rather than scamper away, she charged! Another gasp of laughter escaped the Sovereign as the pup's cool nose pressed into the sensitive patch where her foreleg met her body. Just like her child had done a moment ago, she instinctively twitched away from the contact, eyes dancing.

It was tempting to flip the script and run, giving Weejay the chance to chase. But Wildfire still felt a little lightheaded, despite her joy. So, instead, she dropped to the ground and rolled onto her back, all four legs crooked skyward and chest and belly exposed in open invitation for all the tickles.

Aha! Gotcha! Weejay’s face lit up in delight, and she persisted with more gentle nose-nudging, guffawing goofily to herself all the while. Wildfire’s laughter was contagious; soon Weejay was breezily laughing, and forgot all about her failed hunt, and the darker thoughts of her mother’s sickness that loomed on the horizon.

Wildfire rolled away, prompting Weejay to protest with a joyful Hey!! Giving chase Weejay pounced on her mother’s flank, and started rolling wildly besides her with a stupidly large grin on her face. Many snorts of delight ensued as she juggled rolling in the grass with tickling her mom, even snapping playfully at any green stalks that happened to tickle her nose or tummy.

Any lingering thoughts about the thwarted hunt or feeling under the weather completely dropped out of Wildfire's head as she rolled around in the grass with Weejay. Along with tickling, there was a lot of kicking, nudging, poking and wiggling. At one point, the Sovereign knew the tips of her daughter's teeth as they scored against her elbow, triggering her funny bone and causing fat tears to squeeze from the corners of her glimmering chestnut eyes.

As the tears slithered down her cheekbones, it set off a paroxysm of laughter that Wildfire couldn't have explained. But it felt so wonderful, laughing so hard, her cheeks aching and her belly clenching with the sheer force of it. All the while, she continued swatting playfully at Weejay, although it was difficult to accomplish much of anything in this state.

The laughter wound down after a time and Wildfire let out a long, shaky, happy breath as she flopped onto her side. She gazed at Weejay for a beat, then murmured, "C'mere." Without waiting for the pup to reply, Wildfire reached for her, drawing her daughter closer to her chest and snuffling against the soft furs of her forehead. The foreleg draped over her child's side tightened a little as she shamelessly snuggled her baby girl against her.

Her body still shook from time to time with the aftershocks of her laughquake, yet over time, she calmed and relaxed, her body gone boneless. She felt so completely at peace, her child cradled in her arms, against her fluttering heartbeat. "Love you, Weejay," she murmured, peppering the pup's brow with kisses, her lips curled into a smile, because she was so happy and nothing hurt.
