All Welcome

she regarded the span of water before her with suspicion, pacing at its shallows like a caged lion.

it was vast, to be sure, but she could smell no salt. emaleth was used to rivers, ponds, even small lakes — she had never stood at the shore of freshwater where she could not see the other side. it was unnerving, an ocean that was all wrong, right down to the ice that had begun to form at the edges.

was it a death trap in this early winter? when the ice was thick enough to bear the weight of a snowfall, but not so thick that a body would not fall through in its attempt to cross what would appear to be just another stretch of plain-lands covered in snow... she shuddered at the thought. born upon the sea, to drown would be the worst betrayal of the element she felt closest to.

what are timelines? tastes very strange!

Thus freed from the shackles of leadership, Maegi wandered without care. No longer did a flock depend on her; no longer was she expected to be at beck and call. Her dominion was once the trees and now it was nothing, and the nothingness seemed a twisted sort of joy.

But it couldn't last, could it? For here was a black-pelted woman at the shore of the lake, and as Maegi drew closer, she found the green-blue bi-colored gaze and froze in place.

@Kotake? she asked, her voice small and weak, like that of a little girl's. She hadn't seen her half-sister in so many moons that there was only the barest of memories to lean on; this must be Kotake, for she remembered no other wolf with pelt and eyes like this. And so close to the woods. . .

Potema. Ice ran through her veins. Had her mother, her sisters, returned? To claim the forest, to kill her and all she held dear? She ran her tongue nervously over her jowls, waiting for the other's response.
