All Welcome
He didn't remember the last time he had ventured out this way, but it had been a long while ago. Back to a time when things had certainly had their own hurdles—he thought perhaps the last time he had been here, he had been in control of the weald in whatever fashion he thought fit. Back when the height of summer had begun to wane, back in what seemed a very long time ago for all considered.

In the winter, the lake was a vastly different place.

It had been cold enough now that the edges had frozen solid, save where wandering fares had broken through, where the sun had melted and turned curves sharp. Snow clung where it could, but the depth of the ice was not something so easily trusted and thus he avoided it. Even with the present snowfall, it was easy to tell where it was thinnest by how pools of grey stood and at times spidered out from it.

And for the most part, the locale about the lake was void of any other; nary a bird sang or a hare emerged to pick through the snow that still continued to fall. At least the day was still early; he could have a swift jaunt about here and turn back towards the towering mountains in the east to make it home before the pitchest part of night.

So Dirge roamed.

Tonight Fennec slipped out again.  It was stupid to do so.  Her fathers talk of bears and Wraen's warnings of silent predators echoed in her ears as she carefully picked her way along the  slope.  Even worse was the footing; everything about this was foolish.  But she knew there was a lake up there and she wanted to see it, and for some reason, she needed to leave in order to think straight.

She had marveled over these brief trips how different traveling alone was.  There was no pressure for conversation or noise to distract her.  She listened to the crickets as she climbed and realized, belatedly, that it must be later than she had thought. This was probably why she had slipped away more easily.

A noise to her left made her stiffen and whirl, teeth ready.  Who's there?  If no answer came, she'd charge in to investigate.  No predator was going to take her unawares.

Minutes ticked by unnoticed and gradually he continued his way about the lake's shore with relative ease. It was quite peaceful if he took it into consideration, misleading him into wondering if Hydra had ever graced such a place. With it's relative proximity to Moonspear, it may have even been worth trying to tease her out to such a location... but perhaps at a later date. She was far too riled as of late, wouldn't come out there unless it meant tearing into a subordinate pushing their luck. Or so he believed.

Though given her attitude, he couldn't help but wonder if she would have tore after the meek little doe that made her hushed entrance first at the corner of his sight. With dainty steps and ears that turned at every whisper, he did not immediately peg her as having something off. Yet she did not see him so much as she sensed him as they drew closer; his interest of seeing a new face was whisked away for surprise at the whirl of pearly whites inlaid along a jaw that held a distinct flaw. It was halting, a showstopper to any attempt he had to venture along a familiar avenue.

He had never encountered someone so young and so very blind.

"Easy now," he offered softly, "wasn't my intention to startle you."

Fennec's alarm faded and her lips turned up at his gentle tone.  It was a stranger, but a friendly wolf from the sound of it.  She had no reason to doubt his intentions once he confirmed it, his tone said everything.

You'd need to be quieter to startle me, she answered back a little cheekily.  He had in truth startled her, but only because she'd been so focused on the unfamiliar climb.  She needed to get better about paying attention to both.

Who are you?  He sounded older, but not like anyone she'd ever heard.  Not that she'd met many outside of the Firebirds.

Her features smoothed as she took stock, and his gaze did not waver from the unseeing sight of her own as she did so. The ability to adapt was one particular thing he could not help but admire in others—it was but one skill tantamount to survival in a world that was very much drawn for the fittest of them, and he did not wager that her pack was far off at all.

Little girls did not often wander alone, at least in his estimation.

"I'll just have to try harder next time then," he rejoined, matching her cheeky response with one of his own. "I'm Dirge, from Moonspear. You must live nearby to here, I presume?" He struggled to remember the name of the pack he knew to be closest by, but it did not come. Fire-something, was that it? No...

Ohh.  Now, here, here was where Fennec could have some fun.

You presume?  Why would you think that? She asked, and turned her head in what she guessed was his general direction.  The question was posed innocently enough, but she wondered if he would sense the landmine under it.  She was in no way offended.... but she didn't want him to know this.  She wanted the danger, and the awkward runaround that generally followed.

She waited and didn't introduce herself just yet.  That could wait until he'd answered the question.

Her head swung around towards him, not looking at him so much as through him and somewhere a little off to the left by only a touch. It was haunting gaze but it was sharp enough like the rest of her senses, filed down to make a point. The questions made good on that, though she would not see the smirk that pulled at his lips.

"Why wouldn't I?" She did not smell of the wilderness in full, though nor would he. Then again, any time too long and too alone in the wilderness would rend them to naught, especially with the winter there to stay. But it wasn't the point he was seeking to make either, and he continued steadily: "There's still a pack nearby isn't there? At the other lake—I used to be acquainted with a couple of their scouts, one of which claimed he was the master extraordinaire of scouting."

He'd forgotten his name, but he hadn't forgotten the other. Ceara—he'd wondered what had become of her, or if she had gone back to her family in the end after all. No matter here and now, no telling whether or not this wolf was even apart of the same pack, either.

He didn't take the bait.  Apparently he already knew about a pack nearby.  Fennec was disappointed, but let it go immediately.

Yeah, we have a pack.  She tossed her head in the direction of Firebirds, the way she'd come.  That was probably Penn.  He's an idiot, but does a lot of scouting.  She made the assumption that it was recent, one that was incorrect in this case.  Doesn't make him a master.  She smiled, though, and it was clear the joking was well meaning.  Penn was one of her best friends.

Where are you from? she asked, using his voice to come in closer and get a few whiffs of his scent.  A pack too, but which?

Penn? No, that hadn't been his name. Uncertainty creased his face uselessly; she couldn't have seen it and just as she had let go of disappointment, he let go of the notion that perhaps mister master scout wasn't with her pack any more. Apparently someone else had filled the role, rendering any other description he could have offered equally useless.

"I came from Moonspear, a pack in the mountains not far from here," and on that note, how difficult would it have been to explain mountains to a blind girl? Perish the thought, he hoped that wouldn't be the next question out of her mouth, and diverted the tale. "Is Ceara still in your pack? I can't say I know of your Penn, but I haven't been out this way in quite some time." Too long, really. To think, the last time he had set foot here, his children hadn't quite been born... perhaps conceived. Whichever—too long.

Wrapping!

Never heard of her, she returned back bluntly, with little thought to it.  If she was a part of the Firebirds at some point, it was well before Fennec came there with her family.  The name rang no bells.

The first part of his statement was much more interesting than some random wolf.  Moonspear?  Tell me about it.  She'd heard her mom mention the place, and her friend who lived there, but she'd never given details.  It sounded intense, like just the sort of place she could whip a few lies up about.  Nothing bad, just.... cool.

And be super descriptive, she added after a moment, then waited, poised.  If he was willing, she'd remain a while and drink up every picture he'd paint her.  If not, she'd consider him boring and leave to find someone more fun.
